[Seattle Go Center] Go Tournament Sunday Morning

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Just a quick reminder -- free ratings tournament tomorrow, March 1! Register 10am-10:45, and the first round (of three) begins at 11am. If you're already familiar with this recurring event, then feel free to skip the rest; but we've had an influx of new faces recently, for whose benefit I now paste the full details.

Seattle Go Center Monthly Ratings Tournament

This is a great way to play some intense face-to-face Go! Three rounds, Japanese rules, 45 minutes per player plus byo-yomi (overtime). You do not have play all 3 rounds (just inform the Tournament Director of your plans).

There's no tournament entry fee, though the Go Center membership policies apply: younger than 18 free, first 10 visits free; otherwise, $5 for one-day membership (see http://www.seattlego.org/membership for other options). And you need to be a current AGA member -- visit https://www.usgo.org/members to join or renew. You can join / renew in person at the Go Center, but please come early to do that.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp, and the first round starts at 11:00. If you're running late, you can call 206-545-1424 to register (clock starts at 11:10 whether you're there or not; and you forfeit if you're not there by 11:30). If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round, which starts by 1:30 (but may start sooner).

  • Registration: 10:00-10:45 AM.
  • First round starts: 11:00 AM.
  • Lunch: People usually eat when they finish the first round. There are food options nearby, but we recommend that you bring lunch to the Go Center rather than going out for food.
  • Second round starts: Generally by 1:30 PM, but may be earlier, depending on when the first round ends.
  • Last round ends: Usually by 5:30 PM, approximately.

[Seattle Go Center] Pi Night (observed Mar. 12) - teach Go, eat pie

Hello, fellow Go enthusiasts!

For some time, we have been teaching our great game at Salmon Bay Elementary School's annual "Pi Night", which usually is March 14 (like, "3.14" -- get it?).  But this year, 3.14 is a Saturday, so Salmon Bay is holding their event on March 12.  It's fun teaching the kids to play Go, and they bring several pies, of which you may partake.  (And you can even use the "slicing a pie" metaphor to describe dividing the board into territories when teaching.)

I won't be there, so one of our vivacious volunteers should be willing and able to transport a bag of Go equipment -- 5 or 6 9x9 sets, plus some brochures and "Way To Go" booklets.

Thursday, March 12th
6:30 – 8:00 pm
Salmon Bay School Auditorium
1810 NW 65th St, Seattle, WA 98117

Please email Mike at programs@SeattleGo.org to help out.

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] Mr. Ono Feb.29-Mar.3; Mr. Komatsu Mar.9-Mar.13; upcoming tournaments etc.

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Today, reminders of upcoming events:

Upcoming visitors from Japan

Feb. 29 - Mar. 3:  Ono Shingo, Japanese strong amateur
A friend of Chris Scribner's, 小野慎吾 (Ono Shingo), will visit Seattle this weekend.  He's ranked as a Japanese amateur 7 dan, though in tournaments he plays at a 12d rating.  He's not an accredited pro, but his strength is close to pro 1 dan, and he is a director and instructor at Ishin Project.

While he's here, Mr. Ono has generously offered to play simuls, with up to 4 players at a time (one session Saturday Feb. 29 at 1:30pm, and another two sessions Tuesday March 3 at 2:30pm and 6:30pm).  He also will be competing in the monthly AGA ratings tournament on March 1 -- an outstanding opportunity for a challenging game!  Further, he's interested in getting together with other strong players.  If you're interested, please email programs@SeattleGo.org and I'll pass it along to Chris and Mr. Ono.

Mr. Daiki Komatsu, 3P, Mar. 9 - Mar. 13
Japanese 3 Dan pro Mr. Daiki Komatsu will visit Seattle Go Center the second week of March.  The Go Center is very lucky to have this awesome support from the Nihon Ki-in!  Here's what's scheduled; may be subject to change.
  • Mon. March 9 - 6:30pm - Double Digit Kyu lecture!
  • Tue. March 10 - 2:30pm - Simuls!  & 6:30pm - More simuls!
  • Wed. March 11 - 6:00pm - Single Digit Kyu lecture!

Upcoming tournaments

These are a *great* way to experience the thrill of serious competition.  We're lucky at the Go Center to often have a large enough field that players of just about any level can get in a tournament game.  Each tournament is 3 rounds.  Register at the tournament, 10:00-10:45am.  Current AGA membership is required.

  • Sunday, March 1 - free AGA ratings tournament
  • Sunday, April 5 - free AGA ratings tournament
  • Sunday, May 3 - Annual Spring Go tournament; $12 to enter ($6 for youth 17 and younger), includes pizza lunch and prizes for players who win all three of their games
  • Sunday, May 31 - Spring Youth fun tournament, 1pm-5pm.  Free for youth under 18; not AGA-rated.  Kids choose whether to compete on 13x13 or 19x19.  Prizes for all!
  • Sunday, June 7 - free AGA ratings tournament

Rengo with Pie and Coffee!
Saturday, June 13 -- The annual Rengo with Pie and Coffee is *so* much fun.  Rengo is when teams of two players face off against other two-player teams.  We'll be using the International Pair Go rules, but without regard for the genders of team members (all are welcome).  If you don't have a partner, come anyway -- forming more teams at the start of the tournament.  $12 registration ($6 for under 18) includes two rounds of Rengo, fancy pie, and a chance to win *fabulous* prizes.  Register 5:30-6:00pm, and the first round starts shortly after 6.  We usually finish about 10pm.

Outreach and Tournament Party
The Go Center also needs more outreach volunteers (it's fun and easy, and gets you into cool events like Sakura-Con -- see tomorrow's email), and help planning the 25th Anniversary Party (October).  So far, only one has volunteered (thank you, Lusha!).  Many hands make light work.  And light play is good play.  So, help plan the anniversary party, and get better at Go!  (Your mileage may vary, but your Go community will appreciate your efforts.)

Thanks for reading!  See you soon at the Go Center,
