[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Go Congress Update -- Still Looking for Promotional Person

So, yay, Seattle will host the Go Congress 16-25 JUL 2027 at the SeaTac Hilton.  Many deep thanks to people who volunteered already to direct the congress, manage website updates, account for money and pay bills, and logo design!!  The AGA signed contracts, and everything has been official for a few months now.

The last important role we would still like to find someone (or a pair of people) to own is "marketing" the Go Congress, which entails messaging, promoting, and reaching out to community from now until JUL 2027.  This is largely the cadence of updates and exciting reminders via the EJournal to keep the congress on folks minds and encourage attendance.

Here's a draft slide deck Ken and Tony will be presenting in Boston at this years Go Congress to announce next year in Seattle: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/15zCo_AdEkpqACwrliWrT6hinbOgcBocrw4m_U6rZGOM/edit?usp=sharing

The deck is a short and cool reminder of all the things that attract people to Seattle and help make a congress in Seattle extra fun and exciting.  There's a lot a marketing person can easily reach out and post about every couple of months and more often next spring.  You can get as creative as you like, maybe a Mox Boarding House setup at the congress on a day off or afternoon/evening for people to mix up their game playing.  One person wants to host an AI development/usage activity/workshop/hackathon (nothing definite yet), but another idea you could help promote.

If you or you and a friend are willing to help Ken and Tony and be the cheerleaders for a Go Congress in Seattle, please let me know.  I'll connect you to Ken and Tony and our Slack organizing hub.

Thanks!!
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Sad Go Community News

We lost one of our Go Community this past Thurs.  Mike Malveaux passed quietly it appears in his sleep.  Mike was a super nice, mellow guy who volunteered a lot for Go in the Seattle Sound area.  He was our Program Manager for a few years before Kyle and ran many of our tournaments pre-covid.  Mike just recently in APR was helping at a school outreach event and seemed as vibrant as ever.  He was also very involved in the South Sound Go Club and was one of our regulars during COVID in our online meetups Tue evenings, usually hosting so others could play games.

Mike's wife, Helen, has invited anyone who remembers Mike to join the funeral if you like.  It will be at 08 AUG 11:00am at New Covenant Church (2156 M.L.K. Jr Way, Tacoma, WA, 98405).  Because Kyle and I will be going, we may open SGC late that Saturday, but we'll post about that when we know more.

If you have any questions or plan to attend, please let me know.  I'm also open to carpooling.  Helen also asked me if anyone from the Go Community would want to speak at the funeral, so if you think you do, definitely please let me know so that I can let Helen know.

With Much Fond Remembrance,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Bill Lin Canadian Pro Visiting SGC AGAIN Fri

Hey, all, sorry for the extra mail.  Bill Lin has such a good time today, he decided to come back to SGC Friday 2-5pm, hoping to meet strong players and play some games.  Some folks are already planning to be there, so I'm not sure how many distinct games will be played or he will do simuls.  Please come if you're interesting, but you might just be watching strong players play.

Cheers,
Bill

This is short notice, so sorry for that.  Friends of Bill wanted to bring him to SGC, and he will be there playing some of our strongest players Thurs, 2-5pm, tomorrow.  We will be open if folks want to come play or watch stronger players.  This came together last minute.

Cheers,
Bill

Hello Go players,

Bon Odori is coming up this year. This is a regular event and we are looking to do even more this year than last with both and indoor informational booth and outdoor booth for lessons and gameplay. I need 6-8 volunteers to make this happen.

Bon Odori is located at Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple (1427 South Main St, Seattle, WA 98144) and is on July 18th and 19th. It’s an evening event running 3pm-9pm. It’s a very fun event with dancing in the streets, Japanese Festival food, and more. Volunteers get access to break room with free food and a voucher for some Food vendor. I personally find it a very fun event.

If you like to reach out and help or have question, please reach out to me by either email or in person.
