Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,
Today 6:30-8:30 PM, Drew Barnett leads a class on Tewari (move order) analysis, aimed at the double-digit part of the kyu rating spectrum. Analyzing possible sequences of play with respect to the order in which moves will be played can help reveal the crucial points of a group, and it's exciting to see a relatively high-level concept being rendered practicable for newer players.
These Monday lectures primarily will be aimed at lower DDK-strength players, but of course upper DDK players are more than welcome. That said, some of these lectures are specifically aimed at players of 19x19 boards only, so if you are a DDK player who still plays mostly or entirely on smaller boards, those lectures may naturally be of less value to you. Thematically, later lectures will build off of some of the ideas of earlier lectures, but material is divided up in such a way as to make each unit individually digestible, and attending every week is by no means necessary to get something out of them.
On an unrelated note (except to the degree that our collective desire for more DDK players is related), the Go Center needs a few more volunteers to introduce Go at the annual Bon Odori festival:
- Sat. July 20, 4:00-9:00 PM (festival continues until 10:00)
- Sun. July 21, 3:00-8:00 PM
It will be at Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple, 1427 S. Main St., Seattle WA 98144 in the temple gymnasium. The festival has traditional Japanese folk dancing in the street, cultural exhibits, and lots of great food! Parking is limited, so consider carpooling or public transit. Please don't feel that you don't know Go well enough to teach it to new players. The main thing beginners need is the ability to recognize when groups are captured -- more abstract considerations like fuseki theory and tewari analysis can come later; and teaching someone else is a great way to solidify your own understanding.
