I never came up with anything, nor have my players asked for one. I just ran with the "official" explanation that the cause was unknowable, that morale and belief clicked to somehow unlock long dormant human potential.
From a meta perspective, I always assumed that the rise of Talents in Godlike was a metaphor for the rise of superhero characters in comic books, beginning in the 1930s. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. :-)
P.S. Ran the taking of Monte la Difensa last night...damn that was
awesome. What a fantastic game.
