The orange farming had run it's course in Allan's life. Thirty plus years were enough and the time had come to hand over the reigns to his kids and grandkids. This "retirement" lasted a year and a half and then it was cancer. He had money for treatment and was getting care as good as that money could buy, but nothing worked. He wasn't warm and fuzzy at the best of times and now facing death, he was going to do whatever he could to stay alive as long as possible.
He'd heard a experimental drug trial was starting up, but only in the Midwest. His eldest granddaughter drove him to Minneapolis and he spent his savings making contacts and "fixing it" so he'd get into that trial. Dok Petrov played a key role in the "fix" and the trial did work...worked much, much better than could be expected. On the drug the cancer disappeared almost overnight, and well the side-effects...let's just say that Allan is more than pleased. Sure he's broke and most of his family is unaware of where he is, but he's happy. Now happy for him is grumpy for you, but you get the picture.
