[Seattle Go Center] Less kibitzing - please!

Less kibitzing – please!

Dear Members,

Let’s start with a definition from Sensei’s Library (http://senseis.xmp.net/?FrontPage): kibitzing is giving commentary to an ongoing game when you are not one of the players.  Experienced players know that it is not allowed in tournament play, and it is considered very rude for other serious games as well.  If you are watching a game, and see something that you must share, please wait until after the game is done.  If you are afraid that you can’t remember the pattern, put stones down on another board to record the position for later.

Kibitzing can also be very disruptive to teaching games and Go classes, even though the mood is much more informal.  Please let the teacher concentrate on the issue they want to teach.  If you are a stronger player, you may notice other issues or lines of play.  Please do not join in, unless the instructor specifically asks for your help.  And if you are invited to join in, please remember that beginners are easily overwhelmed by too much information, theory, and vocabulary. Try to keep it simple. The same procedure applies if you are a stronger player attending a class that is intended for a beginner or intermediate group – let the teacher decide how much you participate, and if you are recognized, try to be consistent with the lesson.

Limited kibitzing is allowed at some times at the Go Center, such as for friendly games on Tuesday evening and Saturday afternoon.  However, there is much less kibitzing on Thursday afternoon, even though those are friendly games too.  So please be sensitive to the wishes of all the players before you speak up.

Regards,

Brian
