[Seattle Go Center] Thursday Meetup: One year anniversary

Hi everyone. Tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of the Bellevue Go meetup's beginning. Aside from a few Thursdays around the holidays, we've met every week to play, teach, and learn Go, and we've had a lot of fun.

Come join us for a game tomorrow at the Crossroads mall, from 6:00 to 8:30. Last week we had 7 people show up.

Cheers,
Thane

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday March 1 - 10 am

Dear Go Players,

The Monthly Ratings Tournament is coming up this Sunday, March 1, at 10 am. I expect that we will have a good crowd this time, since we had 26 players in December, and even 14 players on Super Bowl Sunday. There will also be a fun round robin tournament between 4 strong players happening at the same time, which you can watch when you are not playing.

Here are the details of the ratings tournament:

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.
Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp.

If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

If you come before 12:30, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Monday's DDK Class - Post Joseki: 4-4

Hi Everyone!

Tomorrow, we will discuss many of the follow-up moves to common joseki shapes AFTER the joseki has been completed and left alone for a while. In other words, what happens when all of the joseki are finished? This is very likely to contain patterns and information that will be very novel to you and your game, so don't miss it!

Hello Go players. Our Thursday meetup continues as always, from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at the Crossroads mall.

We usually have around 6 people, ranking from beginner level to 6 Dan. Our kyu players often get teaching games or simultaneous games from our Dan players, which we greatly appreciate.

[Seattle Go Center] Events with Lisa Go 7d in early March

Dear Go Players,

I am pleased to announce that Lisa Go, the 7d university student from Japan who visited us last fall, will be back in Seattle for two more weeks in early March.  She will be available for teaching games and game reviews.

She will be at the Go Center on Tuesday evenings (March 3 & 10) and Thursday late afternoons (March 5 & 12).  She may also visit Zoka Coffee on Monday and Friday mornings. (On March 2, 6, and 9)

On Sunday, March 1, we will have a special event.  (This is in addition to our regular Monthly Ratings Tournament on that day.)  Lisa will play in a round robin tournament with 3 other  strong players, starting at 10 am.  This is just for fun – the games will not be rated and there are no prizes.  The first 3 strong players (4 dan or higher) to contact Brian Allen can have a place in this fun tournament.

Regards,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] No DDK Class Monday: President's Day

Hey Everyone-

I should have announced this at least week's class, but I had a mental lapse. There will be no class tomorrow night in observance of President's Day.  Enjoy!

We will reconvene next Monday, the 23rd.  The title of that class will be "Post 4-4 Joseki" and will discuss many of the follow-up moves to common joseki shapes, AFTER the joseki has been completed and left alone for a while. This is very likely to contain patterns and information that will be very novel to you and your game, so don't miss it!

[Seattle Go Center] Thursday Beginner's Class at 6:30 pm

Dear Members,

Long time Go Center member Larry E. will be teaching the Beginner's Night now. Larry has taught Go in a variety of settings, including the McDonald Elementary Go Club, and the Crossroads Bellevue Outreach. Larry is particularly good at finding the missing concept that is keeping a beginner from progressing to the next level. Zhi Wei, a knowledgable and enthusiastic high school student, will be continuing as the assistant teacher.

We thank Carlos Encalada for his dedication as the previous Beginner's teacher. Unfortunately, the demands of his day job, and the stress of less than perfect bus service have made Thursday night teaching difficult for him. We look forward to seeing Carlos at other times.

Beginner's class will now start at 6:30. Since most of the instruction is in small groups, late comers are welcome. We will close at 9:00.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Uwajimaya on Wednesdays

Dear Go Players,

Dennis reports that he is getting plenty of beginners at the Uwajimaya Food Court on Wednesdays, from 6 – 8 p.m., in the International District of Seattle.  Additional volunteer teachers are welcome.  We can train you!  Also, if you just want to play a game, we have extra equipment.  But it is good to invite another friend for the game; Dennis wants to concentrate on teaching.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class: Invading 3-Space Extensions

Hi Everyone!

Tomorrow's DDK class will go over an oft-requested topic; how to invade (or defend against) invading 3-space extensions. We will cover both low-low extensions as well as low-high extensions. There are several common patterns played that YOU NEED to know to reach higher levels of playing (including which variations are ladder-dependent). I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Thurs Beginners Class Feb. 5 at 7:00 pm

Dear Members,

This week, our Thursday Beginners Class will be taught by Larry Eclipse, with assistance from Zei Wei.  This time is for complete beginners, and also for advanced beginners who know the rules, but who are still playing on the smaller boards (9x9, 13x13).  When Larry taught a few weeks ago it was pretty busy – he had four groups of players to coach.  Most of the instruction is with small groups, but we also give short lectures if we have enough people at the same level.

Stronger players are welcome to come by and look for a game.  They can also play teaching games with the beginners.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Tomorrow's DDK Class: Nick Sibicky is WRONG

Hi Everyone-

Tomorrow's lecture will be on the shorter side because I have to go to a concert that one of my students is giving, but Brian Allen will be around to make sure that the SGC is open for you all to get some good games in.

Anyway, the lecture for tomorrow is titled, "Nick Sibicky is WRONG" and is about a couple of the faulty concepts that I have learned in Go and have subsequently inflicted upon you guys. These concepts have a lot to do with the spacing of groups along the edges of the board in the fuseki. I hope that you will want to come learn from my mistakes! See you there,
