[Seattle Go Center] Small donations are good too!

Dear Members,

So far, our end of year donation plea has raised $5600. This is very good, about half our total budget for donations.

I realize that many of you do not itemize your deductions, so the fact that donations to us are deductible from federal
taxable income doesn't matter to you. Still, I hope you can pitch in and support the Go Center. In order to maintain our
status as 501(c)(3) non-profit, we need to show broad public support, and so even a small donation helps us qualify.
Perhaps you could send us $35 - think of it as giving a 10 visit card to a new member.

You can donate using the Paypal button at the bottom of our donation page. You do not need a Paypal account to do
this.
http://www.seattlego.org/donate/
We also accept donations by check or cash at the Go Center. We can also accept payment by credit card when Dennis
Wheeler or yours truly (Brian) is around to run the chip card reader.

Cheers,
Brian Allen
manager@seattlego.org

[Seattle Go Center] Closed today Saturday Dec. 23, Open Tuesday

Dear Members,

Here’s a friendly reminder that the Seattle Go Center will be closed today, Dec. 23, and there will be no DDK class on Monday, Dec. 25.  However, we will be open regular hours on Tuesday, Dec. 26, from 1 – 10 p.m.   And there will be a holiday party starting at 6:00 p.m. that Tuesday – bring something to share (leftovers from Christmas are OK).

Holiday Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Good time to donate!

Dear Go Center Members,

Iwamoto Sensei’s generous gift made the Seattle Go Center possible, but it is our responsibility to keep it running.  We rely more on donations than memberships to do this.  Donations allow us to keep the new member 10-visit card free, and to offer 3 ongoing classes at no extra charge, and to do outreach at 6 festivals in the area.

If you itemize your charitable donations on your Federal income tax, this a great time to give to the Go Center.  With the new tax law, it may be to your advantage to take the standard deduction when you do your taxes for your 2018 income.  (The standard deduction will be increased, so that fewer people will benefit from itemizing deductions.)  And if that is your case, then you should maximize your charitable deductions for this year, 2017, when they can do you some good.  There are only 10 days left.  May I suggest donating to the Seattle Go Center, a 501(c)(3) public charity?

You can donate using the Paypal button at the bottom of our donation page.  You do not need a Paypal account to do this.

http://www.seattlego.org/donate/

We also accept donations by check or cash at the Go Center.  We can also accept payment by credit card when Dennis Wheeler or yours truly (Brian) is around to run the chip card reader.

Here are the details for our nonprofit organization: Our Federal EIN is 91-1653-572.  Our formal name is the Nihon Ki-in Go Institute of the West.  (We “do business as” the Seattle Go Center.)  Our formal address is the same as a regular one:  700 NE 45th St., Seattle WA 98105.

Cheers,

[Seattle Go Center] Holiday schedule with party Tues Dec. 26

Dear Go Players,

Drew will be hosting the Go Center tonight, Dec. 20,  from 6 pm until pretty late.  There will be casual games, and perhaps some instruction for Single Digit Kyu (SDK) Players.

On Thursday, Dec. 21, we will be open our regular hours, from 2 pm to 9 pm.  Nathan will be there in the afternoon, and both evening classes are starting at 6:30.  Jonathan’s class has morphed into a DDK – SDK class as his students have gotten stronger.  Larry will be available for beginners and near beginners.

We will be closed on Saturday, Dec. 23.

We will also be closed on Monday, Dec. 25  (Christmas)

However, we will be open on Tuesday, Dec. 26, and we will be having our holiday party.   If you have Christmas dinner leftovers, bring them to share.  We will get a beer and wine permit, so drinks can be shared as well.  We open at 1:00 p.m.; we will put out the food around 6 p.m.  This will be a great time to show off any new tesujis you got for Christmas.  We will close at 10 pm, or perhaps later if somebody with a key wants to stay.

Have a wonderful Solstice! (Dec. 21)  As a photographer and former Alaskan, this holiday is very important to me.  The light will be coming back!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Open on Wednesday (12/20)

Just a quick note, I'm in town for the holidays and will be opening up the Go Center this coming Wednesday for casual games and perhaps a little study. I plan to be there to open up at 6 o'clock, and will stay as late as folks want to (within reason). Hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The AlphaGo Teaching Tool!

Hey Everyone-
Tomorrow will be our last DDK class of 2017! During it, we will be exploring the newly-released AlphaGo Teaching Tool together. We will look at a number of opening sequences that arise from it, and discuss how it meshes (or clashes) with traditional opening theory.

If you have not yet been using the AGTT, come on down and get acquainted!

[Seattle Go Center] We sell equipment for teaching Go

Dear Go Players,

You should consider teaching Go to relatives and friends during the winter holidays.   We have beginner sized boards in our shop at the Go Center, and also inexpensive sets of stones, both glass and plastic.  Kids love the “Level Up” workbooks; they are great for children who are starting to play Go.  We also have a new shipment of bamboo 19x19/13x13 boards, a lasting gift for players getting serious about the game.

Please come into the Go Center for this equipment, as the Go Center does not ship or sell online.  The best days to buy books and equipment from us are on Tuesdays from 3 – 10 pm, and on Saturdays from 1-7 pm.  You can pay with chip credit cards at those times.  We also accept cash and checks, and if you are using those methods, you can also buy stuff on Thursdays, from 2-9 pm.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Pair Go this Saturday, Dec. 16

Dear Go Players,

Join us for this great holiday event, with two rounds of Pair Go, cake from Bakery Nouveau, raspberries, and charming
prizes. Registration will be from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. on the day of the tournament, Saturday, December 16; we will finish
around 10 p.m. The general admission is ten dollars, five dollars for voting members and youth (under 18). We will be
following International Pair Go Rules. Each pair must have a female and a male, of any age. This is not an official Pair
Go competition, so formal dress is encouraged, but not required.

If you are having trouble finding a partner of the other gender for this tournament, please note that we will have a
Rengo Tournament on Saturday, June 9. We will be following pair go rules, except that there will be no gender
requirement. Teams can be both male, both female, or mixed in June.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Pro 9x9

Hey Go Fans-

I thought we would do a "mini" lecture to look at some Pro 9x9 play. 9x9 games are fast, fun, and contain treasure troves of techniques for us amateurs. Additionally, this will be our second-to-last class for 2017. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] new lost and found items.

Dear Go Players,

We found some eyeglasses in a black case in the Kitchen, near the tea. There were probably left there this weekend.

Also a children's book was left in a bag on a chair near the gobans (floor boards) in the main room.

Please contact me to claim them.

Regards,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Plenty of Players on Tuesdays

Dear Go Players,

Last Tuesday we had a good crowd at the Go Center.  Things were a bit slow in the afternoon, but the evening was jumping.  We had about 35 players total.  Today, Dec. 5, Chris is baking fresh bread to share, and we will also be ordering pizza at 6:30.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Monday DDK: The J-group

Hey Go Fans-
First off, I want you to know that there is only THREE DDK classes left in 2017 (Dec 4, 11, and 18). So don't miss out!

Tomorrow's class will feature a short lecture all about the J-group (commonly called the "Large Pig's Mouth.") In addition to the L-group, the J-group forms one of the most basic corner shapes commonly encountered in actual play. If you want to know how to kill or make it live, you need to come to this class!

Re: [ORE] Re: [Wild talents] first steps

got a first shot at the banish power, with some numbers

useful (5/dice): Banish (switch plane of existence and cannot interact with the other dimension)
capacity: range extra/flaws: endles +3, go first +3, if using go first then add "self only"-3, radius +2, if using radius then add "fragile" and "obvious" -2

Defends (7/dice): insubstantial
hardened defense +2, interference +3, permanent +4, attached -2, if/then (only across dimension) -2

the idea is: the useful power move targets in and out of the rift. you cannot interact on things on the other side.
it can be activate fast but self only, or crete an area that banish anything that enters, but can be interrupted by damage and make gostly sound.

any time someone is targeted by banish, it gets insubstantial (by permanent and attached) and get lots of HD in har.

5HD in insubstantial should do the trick (70 points)
doing a kerberos club character, that leave me with 50 point for the banish.
taking 5 dice should do, so it costs 25 point.

is that any good?
