Dear Go Players,

Team Simon will be playing Team Lisa in a fun tournament on Sunday, Nov. 9, starting at 10:30 am at the Go Center.  There will be two rounds, and all players 4 dan AGA or stronger are invited to participate.  The games will be handicapped, with Simon (Ximeng) Yu playing as a 9 dan, and Lisa Go (our guest from Japan) playing as an 8 dan.  There will be fun prizes for the winning team. (This will also serve as a warmup for the Seattle AGA Pandanet Team, which has a tournament with Los Angeles the weekend following this event.)

If you wish to participate in the team tournament on Nov. 9, please contact Sonny Cho at 425 457-2267 or sunnyc303@msn.com

[Seattle Go Center] Pro Workshop Nov 15-16 with Kuma

Dear Go Players,

Our weekend workshop with a pro from the Nihon Ki-in has been rescheduled to November 15 & 16, Saturday and Sunday.  (Previous reports had the workshop one week earlier.)

Our Sensei is best known as “Kuma”, a 6 dan with the Nihon Ki-in. He is originally from Taiwan, where he is known as Shiung Feng. He speaks Chinese, Japanese and English.  Kuma went to the 2012 European Go Congress. He is currently a pro commentator on the Mejin Tournament.

This is our first weekend workshop in many years with a pro from the Nihon Ki-in, the largest Japanese professional Go association.  Over the years, we have been happy to offer evening lectures and simultaneous games with visitors from the Nihon Ki-in, but this full weekend will be special.

Most of our workshop participants are usually in the 10 kyu to 3 dan range, but stronger players and double digit kyu players are welcome as well.  Children are encouraged to take the workshop if they can stay focused for a 90 minute talk.

More information is on our webpage.  You may also register using Paypal at the bottom of the webpage.  Or you can register in person at the Go Center with cash or check.

Here is the webpage:

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Tomorrow: Fuseki Workshop

Greetings Go Fans-

Tomorrow night's Double-Digit Kyu Class will return with a workshop-style lesson on the opening ("Fuseki" in Japanese).  The biggest concept emphasized will be how to determine the biggest side of the board in the opening.

We will also make sure to have some time to play some games and practice what we learn! I hope to see you there!

Re: [ORE] Help for a Godlike-talent

Time Fugue is quite close! Especially with the broader effect. If we put in a bit of area (say, the whole planet) and forget about Mass, it might be what we're looking for.

The cafeteria Extra Actions doesn't really have the feel we're aiming for. Instead we'd want it to work so that he rolls his ability, and the width of the result is the number of "turns" he can take while the rest only take one. If no match is found, he has only that one turn.

I know it's not as neat as the extra actions example, but the cafeteria version does not feel exactly right. So, how would you go about building this ability? Also, this is a very powerful ability, so a mechanism for more quickly depleting & recharging will mechanism might be handy too -- or we might just slap the willpower cost or willpower bid to it. Or perhaps Mental Strain.

[ORE] The Kerberos Club at Patreon

The Kerberos Club, that most notoriously Strange establishment of Victorian London, has insinuated itself upon Patreon:

http://www.patreon.com/kerberosclub

Apparently it threatens to reveal secrets of its adventures, allies, and enemies if enough people donate to it. Common cash seems a paltry motivator for such a storied group as the Kerberans; but then again they're often accused of motivations far worse.

The first proposed project Benjamin Baugh's treatise on the "Académie scientifique pour les jeunes dames," a Paris school that provides a Strange education to young girls with singular gifts. The Kerberos Club knows little about the school ("many in the Club failed to even recognize it until Parisian schoolgirls were chasing one another about the skies of the city in balsa and clockwork ornithopters"). Perhaps Patreon supporters will change that.

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night: Thursday 7pm October 16, 2014

Dear Members,

Beginners of all sorts are invited to our weekly Beginner's Night at the Seattle Go Center. Come get more games in with other beginner's. Some exposure to lecture topics appropriate for beginners. Ask a more advanced player for a teaching game. Or come work on some graded go problems from our amazing library.

Zhi Wei Chen was excited to bring another topic after last week's words on thickness and weakness. Unfortunately he won't be able to join us. I, your humble host, will have some life death problems out as well as encourage more games with other beginners.

We offer tailored introduction to the rules for absolute beginners as always...

The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games.

More experienced players are encouraged to continue to come and grace us with there experience. Thank you and hope to see you there tonight.

Carlos Encalada

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Monday: Shape

Greetings and Salutations!

This week, we will look at shape, specifically some of those "good"
shapes that are commonly seen when invading lightly or trying to make
eyes. If you are familiar with this sort of thing, then you'll get some
good reading practice. If not, then you'll get to see some places where
you don't want to connect your stones. Hopefully, everyone will learn
some new moves to try out in their games.

See you Monday night!

[Seattle Go Center] Portland Go Tournament, October 18-19

Dear Seattle Go Center Members,

Here is a friendly reminder that here is a big two day tournament scheduled for next weekend (Oct. 18-19) in Portland.  Note that the games are long -- 60 minutes to a side. The details are below.

Cheers,

Brian

PORTLAND GO TOURNAMENT

October 18-19, 2014

Lewis & Clark College, Portland, OR

PLEASE SEE THE NEW POLICY ON CHILDREN AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS DOCUMENT.

Come play five rounds of AGA-rated Go! This is a handicap tournament, so you can expect some exciting, close games no matter your rank.

For strong players (6D+ AGA), all games will be even -- may the best player win!

Prizes will be awarded for:

Top three 6D+ (even games)

Top three 1D-5D (handicap)

Top three 9k-1k (handicap)

Top three 10k- (handicap)

Top youth player (22 and under)

Top female player

TO REGISTER: Register at www.goclubs.org. If you entered all of your personal information last year, it should still be there; you may wish to update your rank. Email me (drake@lclark.edu) if you have any questions.

REGISTRATION FEE: $15 if you've preregistered by SEPTEMBER 19, $25 otherwise, no registration fee for youth players (22 and under). ALL players must also either be AGA members (you can join at the tournament for $30, $10 for youths) or pay a one-tournament membership fee of $10.

All fees are paid by cash or check on the day of the tournament.

LOCATION: Albany 218 and 220 on the campus of Lewis & Clark College. This is the same location as last year. Maps:

http://www.lclark.edu/GENERAL/MAPS/

SCHEDULE: All games give each side 60 minutes plus five 30-second overtime segments (byo-yomi).

Saturday, October 18

8:15 AM  Registration

9:15 AM  Round 1

1:00 PM  Round 2

3:30 PM  Round 3

Sunday, October 19

9:15 AM  Round 4

1:00 PM  Round 5

3:30 PM  Award Ceremony

TRANSPORTATION: Parking on campus is free on the weekends. If you're coming from downtown Portland, you can take the Pioneer Express shuttle bus:

http://www.lclark.edu/offices/transportation_and_parking/shuttle/

FOOD: There is a coffee shop (Maggie's) open on campus; Fields Dining Room is open for lunch and dinner. Info on these establishments can be found here:

http://www.cafebonappetit.com/lewisandclark/

Note that Maggie's doesn't open until noon on the weekend, so if you need an infusion of caffeine before your first round, bring something along.

CHILDREN: We definitely want to encourage children to play and enjoy the game. We also want adults to be able to concentrate without excessive distraction or disruption. We therefore must insist that all children under 9 be supervised by a non-playing adult.

[Seattle Go Center] Anniversary Tournament Report

Dear Members,

Our 19th Anniversary Tournament, held Sunday Oct. 5,  was the same size as the 18th Anniversary Tournament – 24 players.  It had more children than the previous year, with seven youth.   There were fewer strong players than last year, perhaps because we had another tournament for them (the Seattle Pandanet City League Qualifier) two weeks earlier.

Edward Kim 7d won the Open Section, with Dong Ma 6d placing 2nd.   Peter Nelson, a new arrival to Seattle,  won one of his games, with Kum Kang Lee 5d, but reported that he quickly fell behind when playing Edward Kim.  Still, he is playing well for somebody who was rated 3 dan in August.

In the Dan Level Handicapped Section, Ben Hakala took first place, and Chanseok Oh took second.  In the Single Digit Kyu Section, Zhi Wei Chen took first place and Frank Brown took second.  In the Double Digit Kyu Section, Elan Ma took first place, and Stella Oh took second.  (Chanseok and Stella have the same family name, but they are not related.)

Zhi Wei Chen had a 3-0 record, and so he also won the youth award.  He was playing at his AGA rating, which apparently has not caught up to his real playing strength.  We hope he gets a big promotion when this tournament is rated by the American Go Association!

Regards,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK class tonight, 10/8, 7pm!

Hey everyone!

Reminder that the single digit kyu classes are back from summer vacation and starting again!  We're going to be starting a two month series on tesuji starting this week, and we'll be starting tonight with some basics: loose ladders!   This series on "reading fundamentals" is targeted at the 5k-9k range.

We've also been running a series of connection problems, which have been a bit harder, maybe the in the 1k-4k range.  I'll continue to give out these connection problems for the more advanced students in the class and we'll see how we do.

As always, participation has a big impact in determining the curriculum -- show up and let me know what works!

See you there!
-Andrew

Re: [ORE] Re: Introducing

If I start a new game, new system, I have a group session where we go over rules and make characters. We tweak them later as people figure out the system better. One or two premade examples is useful, but I don't make players play those.

If I convert to a new system, as happened when I switched to ORE for my current game, I convert their characters, then let them review and make sure I captured the flavor right with my design choices, and still let them tweak if needed in the first couple of sessions.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class tonight with Guest Teacher Jon Friedman

Dear Go Players,

Tonight, Monday, Oct 6, Jon Friedman will give a lecture on the “L” Groups, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Go Center.  These life and death problems come up all the time. There will be time to play a game after the lecture.

This class is intended for Double Digit Kyu Players (DDK). If you don’t know what a kyu player is, but can finish a 19x19 game, this class is for you. Stronger players are welcome too.

Nick Sibicky will return to teaching the DDK class on October 20.  Next week, Monday, October 13, the Guest Lecturer will be Dan Top.  Nick’s previous lectures can be found on Youtube at: https://www.youtube.com/user/nicksibicky

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [ORE] Introducing

If you are concerned about dedicating the time to build characters when you don't know if they will like the game, you can use one of the various One Roll character generators out there. Let them roll some dice, make some decisions, and 15 minutes later you're playing. Just be clear that it's an option and not the primary way to build characters.

Reign isn't too bad, but I find that supers characters take longer to build than any others. They require a lot of rules referencing, while the players often have very specific ideas on how the character works. Unless you are using pre-gens, expect to dedicate a session just to character gen.

Of  course, with Godlike, it's a good idea to have a few pre-gens in your back pocket as casualty replacements.

Re: [ORE] Introducing

Having a session for character creation is always good...for Reign it could likely cover a majority of the rules. The chance to answer questions and see what's in the minds of the party is a valuable one.
