[Seattle Go Center] A Note on Accrual Lifetime Memberships

This is not a membership drive per se, but I was asked to remind folks that we created a new membership plan with our prices increases last fall.

If you buy 12 annual memberships (at regular price) within 14 contiguous years, then you can convert to a lifetime membership.  The tradeoff for SGC is that we lose the opportunity to have corp matching for part of the lifetime membership cost, but we may incite more folks to purchase annual memberships year over year to help fund raising and to demonstrate to the IRS member support.  This is a bit of an experiment that we think could be good for members and SGC.  This policy went into effect 01 OCT 2023.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Reminder: New Open Time and Class Wednesdays

SGC is starting a new open time on Wednesday nights.  Starting on 24 JAN, next week, Drew will lead weekly study sessions from 6:00-8:00pm, aimed at giving high DDK to mid SDK level players the tools they need to reach dan level.    Drew is an active volunteer for SGC and often closes later for folks to stay, and he gets great reviews for the teaching he's done at various schools and community events.

SGC is also open to just come in and play some Go at this time if you like.  Drew is volunteering the teaching and hosting, and we greatly appreciate it!!

Drew's plan is to focus primarily on game reviews, with an emphasis on fuseki analysis, tsumego problems, and fighting strategies.  There will be homework assignments each week for those who can regularly attend.  Drew also wants to record some lectures that we'll post on the SGC youtube channel, but that will be later in the spring.  We'll announce when recording lectures in advance.

Please come by and participate, should be fun and good learning.  Drew is looking forward to improving along with folks who join in.

Thanks,
Drew and SGC

P.S.,
All normal operations are in effect.

[Seattle Go Center] Please Prepare for Maeda Workshop Sat and Sun

First, a reminder that SGC is closed for Shogi and Go open play on Saturday.  The outer doors will be closed once the workshop begins due to the extreme cold this weekend.

Second, it will be very cold this weekend, low 20s F and feels like below 20F.  Please wear warm clothes just in case.  PNA does a good job heating our space, but on the weekends the boiler only burns a few times a day, with it becoming slightly cooler before it fires for the next cycle.  Commensurately, we will close the outer door, which we normally leave open, to restrict the cold air flowing in.

We have 20 people signed up (sending email to all because we do not have emails for pre-registered folks, and others may register Sat morning).  You can arrive and register after 11:00am Saturday.  I will arrive with Maeda Sensei as soon as I can after picking him up at the airport and making sure he has had some food.  I expect to be at SGC by noon with Maeda Sensei, hopefully earlier.  There will be no lunch break Saturday, so please arrive fed or with snacks to last from noon to dinner time.

I'm am super looking forward to this workshop.  We hope to have 2-3 in 2024, maybe one around the US Congress week and one in the fall.

Cheers,
Bill
