[Seattle Go Center] Weekend Events

Dear Go Players,

This Saturday, May 31, Simon (Ximeng) Yu 1p will be teaching at the Go Center, starting around 2:00.  The Go Center will open the regular Saturday hours (1-7 p.m.)  Most Saturdays we have more than 20 players visit.

The Crossroads meet-up will not be happening this Saturday, but will continue this summer on Thursdays and Saturdays, from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.

The Ratings Tournament is this Sunday, June 1.  From email, I know we have a 6 dan playing, and a 20 kyu as well, in addition to our usual low dan players and single digit kyu players.   So we should be able to find games for a wide range of players. Registration is on the day of the tournament, starting at 12:00 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday, June 1

Dear Go Players,

Once again I am shocked to discover that another month is fast approaching. Our Monthly Ratings Tournament is this Sunday, June 1, at the Go Center, with registration from 12:00 to 12:45. At the last regular Monthly Ratings Tournament in April we had 10 players from 2 dan to 20 kyu.

Here are the details of the tournament:

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits. Registration is from 12:00 - 12:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit.

AGA membership required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that. You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Closed this Sat Afternoon, Open at 6:00, also meetup in Bellevue

Dear Go Players,

Here is a friendly reminder that the Go Center will be closed this afternoon, Saturday, May 24, but it will be open at 6:00 p.m. and into the night as we watch the 5th game of the Lee Sedol – Gu Li Jubango online.  Of course, people will be playing Go at the Center as well.  The match game will probably go past midnight, and Dennis Wheeler plans to stay until the end.

We also have a meet-up at Bellevue Crossroads scheduled this Saturday, May 24, from 6:30 – 8:30, with Frank Fukuda as host.  They will meet near the giant chess board in the “Game Lane”, near Uncle’s Games.  There is no charge for this, and we had 5 people come on the last Saturday we did this.

I hope you have a good weekend.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Spring Tournament Results

Dear Members,

My apologies for not sending this out sooner. Our Spring Tournament at the Go Center on May 4 was well attended, with 26 players. Steven Shi, a UW freshman, won the Open Section. It was his first tournament at the Go Center. Jinhe Cui placed second, and Kum Kang Lee placed third. In the stronger Handicap Section, Dengda (Dan) Tang took first place, and Zhihong Yao (known to most members as Yao) took second. In the Handicap Section for 6 kyu to 30 kyu, Stella Oh took first place and Zhi Wei Chen took second. Stella also won the Youth Award with her 3-0 record. Her teacher is Sonny Cho.

Although they didn't win any prizes, congratulations also to the Betcher brothers, for playing in the Open Section for their first time, and for winning some of their games against very strong players. Jordon was 1-2, and Job 2-1.

The AGA ratings now include the results of this tournament. Thanks also to our Tournament Directors, Bill Chiles and Dan Top.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Eastside Donations Needed

Dear Members,

We are pleased that our Crossroads Bellevue meet-ups are now a regular event.  Frank F. will be at the “Game Lane” this Saturday, May 24, from 5:30 – to 8:30, and Thane will be there next Thursday, May 29, for the same hours.  This is the first time we have had weekly gatherings on the Eastside on a continuing basis.

We are keeping some of our outreach equipment at Crossroads for the meet-ups.  The replacement cost of this equipment is about $400.  It would be great if the Eastside players could make donations to the Go Center to help us out.  If most Crossroads regulars paid $30 each, we would come out about even.  Playing at Crossroads is free; the donation would be “paying forward” for our next outreach effort.  Since we are a 501(c)(3) charity, the donations would be tax deductible (for people who itemize their deductions on their federal tax).

Donation checks can be made out to the “Seattle Go Center”, and sent to the address below.  You can also use our “Paypal” button on our website to make donations with a credit card, or with Paypal.  The button is at the very bottom of this page:

http://www.seattlego.org/donate/   We would really appreciate your help.

Cheers,

Brian

Re: [ORE] Booster Question

I would word it as "Mass" and be done with it. That gives you x10 per level.

Having more minions doesn't have any mechanical effect on the rolls, it just presents you with more options related to having more people, which is pretty much the same as them all being 20 feet tall or super dense (or being a swarm of ants or nanites etc).

That's coming from a "don't over complicate it" GM.

[Seattle Go Center] Congratulations to the "Seattle 1" AGA Pandanet Team!

Dear Members,

The “Seattle 1” team of the AGA Pandanet City League won their tournament with Washington D.C. this weekend, playing on-line.  This means that they win a free to trip to New York City to play the Vancouver B.C. team in person for the championship at the US Go Congress in August.  Congratulations!

The Seattle team this round was Simon (Ximeng) Yu, Ho Son, and Momoko Tsutsui.  Dong Baek Kim has played in other rounds.  Michael Cho is the team captain, and Sonny Cho helped as well.

In the final round, Sonny reports that Simon was ahead by about 20 points when his opponent resigned.   Momoko Tsutsui lost a close game by 4.5 points.  Ho Son won an exciting game by 9 points against Jie Li 9d, who has won many national tournaments.  Ho Son captured a mid-size dragon early in the game and never gave his opponent a chance to come back.

We look forward to the finals in New York!

[Seattle Go Center] Monday's DDK Class: Beer Game/Pro Review

Hi Everyone-

A couple of things about tomorrow's DDK class....

First, there is a SGC board meeting going on at 6:30 pm. Because of the
logistics of this, we will have time to play some games FIRST and do the
lecture AFTER. So, come at 6:30 and play some go!

At 7:30 pm, we will start the lecture. Recently, my friend Kevin Hwang
was in town for a job interview from Texas and we met up late night at a
bar and brought a go board and played some go. This go may not have
been our finest (because, well, you know.....beer) but he recorded the
games and showed them to his teacher, Jennie Shen, 2P. Kevin was nice
enough to transcribe her comments and send them to me, so I'd like to
show you all what a 2-dan professional said about our moves!

TLDR; Come see my drunken go game reviewed by a 2P! Hope to see you there!

Nick Sibicky, 4D
Double Digit Kyu Class
6:30-8:30 Mondays at the SGC

[Seattle Go Center] Saturday Events - May 17

Dear Go Players,

The big event this weekend, May 17-18,  is our outreach at the U District Street Fair.  We will be under a canopy on “the Ave” just north of 42nd St, almost across the way from Bulldog News and Espresso.  Our hours are 10-7 Sat, and 10-6 Sun.  There will be free hot drinks for all instructors.

The Go Center will be open for regular hours this Saturday, May 17, from 1-7 p.m.  Dennis Wheeler will be there.  Instructor John Richards will be teaching at the Street Fair.

Pro Simon (Ximeng) Yu will not be teaching this Saturday.  Instead, he will be playing for Seattle in the AGA Pandanet City League.  You can watch his game online on the Pandanet Go Server, starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday.  By the way, the Seattle A team is doing well in this tournament, and if they win this weekend, they will one of two teams competing for the championship at the Go Congress in New York this August.  Ho Son, Momoko Tsutsui, and Dong Baek Kim are also on the A team, with Michael Cho as the Captain.  We wish them more success!

The Meet-up at Crossroads Bellevue will not be happening this Saturday evening.  However, it will continue in the future, on both Thursdays and Saturdays.

Regards,

Brian

[ORE] NO SOUL LEFT BEHIND: Playtesters needed for 'Better Angels'

Via http://arcdream.com/home/2014/05/no-soul-left-behind-playtesters-needed-for-better-angels/

For the last few months, Caleb Stokes (No Security) has been running a Better Angels campaign called "The Spared and the Spoiled." You can listen to it on the RPPR Actual Play Podcast.

But as fun as that is, it's just the beginning — the fruit with which we tempt you to evil. We are fiendishly pleased to announce that we plan to publish Caleb's campaign as a full-length Better Angels sourcebook under the title No Soul Left Behind

It'll be coming to Kickstarter soon. But in the meantime we need playtesters! If you have Better Angels and you have a few friends willing to play it and make notes as they go, we need your help. Email shane.ivey@gmail.com with "'No Soul' Playtesting" in the subject field to sign up. (Cult of ORE warning: Please do NOT just "Reply" to this email!) We'll send detailed instructions and guidelines starting Monday, 19 May 2014.

If you playtest one or two scenarios from No Soul Left Behind—and send us playtest reports as instructed—we'll send the final PDF edition free to you and each friend who helped you playtest it. If you playtest three or more scenarios, we'll also send you one copy in print, free. Or if you playtest five or more scenarios we'll send two copies in print. Of course every playtester will be listed as such in the book's acknowledgements.

What are you in for? Listen as Caleb himself teaches to the test:

. . .

Are you still here? Send that email and sign up now!

[ORE] Better Angels: The Cat O' Nine Tails, Vessel of the Villainous Nine

Via http://arcdream.com/home/2014/05/better-angels-the-cat-o-nine-tails-vessel-of-the-villainous-nine/

Cat-o-Nine-Tails

Written by Greg Stolze and illustrated by Kurt Komoda, © 2014.

The air/land/sea assault craft of the notorious Villainous Nine is a vaguely feline black-and-purple vessel roughly the size and shape of one of those ridiculous stretch Hummer limo-SUVs.  The four-foot-tall tires under the stylized wheel wells that look like the limbs of a cat poised to strike propel it at rates of up to 100 mph on the road, and a respectable 65 over rough terrain like, probably, your home.  Those same wheels rotate downward to house jet turbines that can lift it, let it hover, or send it through the skies at a top speed of 200 mph.  On the water, the tires ratchet outwards and up while pontoons descend and let it skate along looking, for all the world, like a cat recoiling from a puddle. But cats on puddles don't run at 150 mph.

So that's the 'cat' element.  What about the nine tails?  Well, one of them, in the middle, is the rear jet port that provides forward thrust.  The other eight are articulated tentacles, four on each side of the jet, tipped with grasping pincers and, often, with some kind of ordinary machine gun or cannon mounted. The Villainous Nine change the weapons up quite often, depending on the needs of the heist/score/atrocity.

So far, it just gets the Nine where they're going (albeit in style), with weapons turrets that aren't anything much more complicated than the snake-like robots being built at Carnegie Melon University.  The unholy devilishness of the device is that it's actually cheaper to maintain than a house cat.  It runs on water and doesn't even need a cat box.  Moreover, it gets almost fifty miles to the gallon, flying, driving or sailing the seas.  Any oil exec would tell you this is clearly, clearly the work of Hell itself.

Statted up as a device, the Cat O' Nine Tails is a Major Environmental Change, so it cost its maker (Brian "Brains" Ornichowski) 3 Generosity.  It mimics normal vehicles (which would be minor) except for the fueling gimmick, which pushes it up to Major.  Its flaw is one level of "Bulky," making it big enough for all nine to travel in it. (Ornichowski drives, usually making Sly Cowardice or Endurance rolls.) The guns and tentacles are really just chrome for ordinary technology, usually offering +3 weapon Advantage to Sly Cruelty rolls. Each passenger has access to one armed 'tail.'

Activation: Sly Cowardice or Endurance

Effects:

  • Major Environmental Change

Flaws:

  • Bulky

Cost: 3 Generosity

Re: [ORE] Re: Update to 'Blood of the Gods'

Just PDF. Although now that you mention it, I could see about doing a cover and setting it up as POD next to the PDF.

We have updated Blood of the GodsDr. Paul Mitchener's epic Wild Talents sourcebook of heroic action in mythic ancient Greece. In Blood of the Gods the players' heroes and heroines are descended from the gods and goddesses themselves and hold the gods and goddesses as personal patrons. As demigods the player characters derive incredible supernatural powers from both ancestor and patron. They face all the dangers and wonders of ancient myth.

The new update adds new material on roleplaying the culture of archaic Greece and a new adventure, "The Golden Fleece," where your heroes can undertake a quest to achieve the magical golden fleece of Colchis and save beloved Athens from disaster.

Contents

  • Heroes and Antagonists (new skills, weapons, the Divine Hero archetype)
  • Gods and Religion (hubris, contact with the gods, gods and titans, Olympian gods and goddesses)
  • Gifts (divine powers built with Wild Talents rules)
  • Ancient Greek Culture and Beliefs (divine heroes, the polis, philosophy and technology, women in mythic Greece, and more)
  • Real and Mythical Places (from Argos to the Underworld)
  • Events (an overview of the 6th century BCE)
  • Example Characters (seven heroes ready to play)
  • Monsters (16 creatures from Greek myth)
  • Sample Adventure: Funeral Games (intrigue and heroism—which will win out?)
  • Sample Adventure: The Golden Fleece (follow the path of Jason of the Argonauts!)
  • Adventure Seeds (six ideas to build new adventures and campaigns)

[Seattle Go Center] U District Street Fair Outreach this Sat and Sun - May 17 & 18

Dear Volunteers,

It’s time to introduce ourselves to the neighbors!  We will be setting up a canopy and a table with boards at the U District Street Fair this weekend. We need friendly teachers to show people how to play “capture” on small boards.  There will also be chances for teaching games on the 13x13 and 19x19 boards.  If you are new to teaching, we are glad to mentor you.  Our main advice is to not rush the instruction; it is easy to swamp beginners with too much information.  As Bill Camp put it, “Never answer a question that hasn’t been asked.”

We need instructors for:

Saturday 10 am – 7 pm

Sunday 10 am – 6 pm

We will be on the “Ave” (University Way), in booth 343, across the street from Bulldog News Service Espresso, a bit north of 42nd St.

I also need help for load-in and load-out

Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. (meet at the Go Center)

Sunday 6 – 7:30 p.m. (start at the booth)

Please contact me if you can help out.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Youth Scholarships to Go Congress

Dear Members,

This August, the U.S. Go Congress will be in New York City at the Hotel Pennsylvania in midtown Manhattan. More information is at:

http://www.gocongress.org/

Many young people attend the Go Congress, but they have to be accompanied by an adult.  There are special programs and opportunities for kids.  While this gets expensive for folks in the state of Washington, there are three scholarships available for local youth.  The American Go Foundation is offering a $200 scholarship to youth who want to attend the Go Congress. They have to write an essay to apply. There is still time to apply for this. The second AGF scholarship program is for youth competing in the Redmond Cup, which is under way,  and in the North American Kyu Championship, which is already finished. The third scholarship comes from the Seattle Go Center.

Using a gift from the Seattle Chapter of the AGA, the Seattle Go Center will provide up to $300 in additional scholarship funds to youth from the State of Washington who are attending the US Go Congress.  The total funds available are $1,200; if there are more than four qualified youth by May 30, they will divide up the $1,200 proportionately.  The Seattle Go Center funds are intended as a supplement to the current AGF scholarships for the Go Congress.

If youth have already completed their AGF scholarship  application, no additional forms will be needed for the supplemental scholarship funds from the Seattle Go Center. They should simply notify Paul Barchilon at youth@usgo.org that they are interested in the additional help. For more information about the AGF Go Congress scholarship program, which is still taking applications,  please go to this link:

[Seattle Go Center] Today, Thursday, May 8

Dear Go Players,

All our regular Thursday events are happening today, May 8.  The Go Center opens at 2:00 p.m., and we usually have a small group here in the afternoon.  Players in the 10 kyu – 4 dan range can usually find a game.  Both Japanese and English are spoken (and often Chinese).  If you like a quiet game of Go, this is a good time to come. In the evening, the Beginners Class with Frank Lam continues, and it is open to new players.  We usually have some kyu players, too.

On the Eastside, the very successful Crossroads Meet-Up continues, in the “Game Lane” of the Crossroads Bellevue Shopping Center.  This week, they will be meeting from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.  The players range from double digit kyu players to dan level.  Sonny Cho 6d often comes and provides instruction.  David O. 4d has also been coming.

In Greenwood, the Couth Buzzard bookstore/coffeehouse gathers Go players on Thursdays. (8310 Greenwood Ave N., Seattle, 98103.) Our instructor John Richards is a regular, and there are usually at least two games in progress.  Some of the kyu players we know from Sakura Con hang out here.  They close at 9:00 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Tonight: Zen Go Survivor!

Hi Everyone-
For those of you who haven't been to the class before, you may be
wondering exactly what "Zen Go Survivor" means. Well, simply put it's a
combination of "Zen Go" and "Survivor Go!" Zen go is a go game that is
played between 3 people (sometimes 5) where play rotates around the
table alternating black and white. The odd number of players means that
every other turn, you will alternate between playing a move for white
and playing a move for black. It is a wonderful way to study the game,
as you are trying to find the best moves for both players. "Survivor
Go" is a form of teaching, where the teacher rewards or (more often)
penalizes every move you make, based on your level of ability.

Anyway, this should be a lot of fun! I hope to see you there!

Nick Sibicky, 4D
Double Digit Kyu Class
6:30 - 8:30 pm

[Seattle Go Center] Tokyo Go School Aug 26 - Sept 4

Dear Seattle Go Center Members,

The Nihon Ki-in has organized a Go workshop in Tokyo for adults and college students from August 26 – Sept 4.  This is for players 10 kyu and stronger, and it is designed for non-Japanese players.  It includes cultural tours, instruction from pros, and participation in a large amateur tournament.  The prices look very reasonable, especially for Tokyo.  For more information, please visit:
