[Seattle Go Center] This Saturday will be a good day to visit

Dear Members,

The last few Saturdays at the Go Center have been booming, with everybody from beginner to Pro showing up.  This Saturday, July 30,  may be a bit smaller,  since the U.S. Go Congress has started up in Boston.  But I expect we will still have a good crowd.  John Richards will be coming to teach the children, and Larry E will be available to teach all ages.

We have lots of visitors in the summer, from beginning players who are fans of Nick Sibicky, to students from China who are stronger than our 6 dan amateurs.   So come down to the Go Center to welcome our Go playing friends.

In August, we will be open on Saturdays 1-7,  Tuesdays 1-10, and Thursday evenings 6-9.

Many of the events at the U.S. Go Congress will be broadcast on the AGA Youtube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/user/USGOWeb

Games will also be recorded and broadcast on the go servers KGS and sometimes IGS (Pandanet)

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Opportunity for Japanese and Chinese heritage children with aging parents

Dear Go Center Members:

We are forwarding this message from a research group at the UW.  It looks like a good project.

Regards,

Brian Allen

manager@seattlego.org

Are you interested in participating in a focus group for adults with aging parents? This August the University of Washington Health Promotion Research Center will be working with the National Asian and Pacific Center on Aging to evaluate public health messages connecting adult children with resources for their aging parents. If you are over 18 years of age, Chinese or Japanese, and have a parent, step-parent or parent-in-law aged 65 or older, then you may be eligible to participate in a focus group for this study!

Dinner will be served, and all participants will get a $50 gift card for their time.

If you are interested or would like more details about this project, please call Lillian (708-890-8475), fill out our Screening Survey (https://catalyst.uw.edu/webq/survey/leoryliu/308757) so that we can call you back if you are eligible, or email our project (memoryuw@uw.edu).

[Seattle Go Center] Reduced Hours in August

Dear Members,

The Go Center  will be open today, Thursday, July 28, starting at 2 pm, with Lucy as host.   But please note that our schedule changes in August, as our volunteers go off to the U.S. Go Congress in Boston, and as they take vacations.

The Seattle Go Center will still be open on Tuesdays 1-10 pm, Thursday Evenings 6-9, and Saturdays 1-7 for games during the month of August.  Our Class for Complete Beginners with Larry Eclipse continues on Thursday Evening as well, starting at 6:30.  We will continue to have informal instruction for beginners on Tuesdays from 3-9 pm, and Saturdays from 1-5 pm.

Please note that the other Go Center classes will not be meeting in August.  The Monday DDK class with Nick Sibicky and the Wednesday SDK class with Andrew Jackson and Peter Nelson will return in September.  (If you are looking for an evening game, your options are Tuesdays, which are big, and Thursday evenings, which are small, but usually kyu players can find a game.)

We will also be closed in August on Thursday afternoons, and Sundays.  We will expand our schedule in September.  Our home page has the August schedule on the right:

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] No Ratings Tournament in August

Dear Go Players,

As usual, we will not have a Monthly Ratings Tournament in August, since the U.S. Go Congress is happening at the same time.  You can arrange “self-paired” games, and put the results in the red lidded jar, on the 2nd desk near the entrance,  if you want to play rated games.

The next Monthly Ratings Tournament is Sunday, September 4.  Our big Anniversary Tournament, with prizes, is Sunday, Oct 2.

We have more information at:

[Seattle Go Center] Seattle AGA Meeting

Dear AGA Chapter members,

With the US Go Congress coming up, the Seattle AGA Chapter will have a short meeting tomorrow, Tuesday, July 19, at 7:00 p.m., at the Seattle Go Center.

This may surprise new members of the Go Center, but the AGA Chapter is a different organization from the Seattle Go Center.   Many people belong to both organizations.   In order to get a rating at the Go Center, you need to be a member of the  American Go Association.  We have a page that explains this in more detail:

http://www.seattlego.org/aga-chapter/

Peter Nelson, the Chapter Rep, will be poling the members on various issues, including spending some of the Chapter’s money on Go events, and the AGA Board Elections.  (The Western Regional Board Position is elected by the Chapters.  Our own Andrew Jackson is running for that position.)  Please join us if you are an AGA member.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK class tomorrow 7/18: Attack and Defense (Jonathan Cheng subbing)

Dear fellow go players,

This week, Jonathan Cheng will once again be subbing for Nick Sibicky in the DDK class.

The topic of this week's class is attack and defense, which will be explored as Jonathan walks everyone through one of his recent games. Have trouble figuring out how to attack your opponent's weak stones while strengthening your own? Always feel like the timing of your invasions are off? Then this class is for you!

Please bring your questions, and any of your own games you would like to review with Jonathan after the lecture.

Doors open at 6p, and the center will stay open for games until 10p.

Hope to see you then!

-Lucy

[Seattle Go Center] Weekend Plans - Go Center and Bon Odori

Dear Members,

The Seattle Go Center will be open this Saturday 1-7 pm.  Last week it was busy, with John Richards teaching kids, and a strong player visiting from China, and many kyu players.  I have heard 2nd hand that a pro from the Kansai Ki-in in Japan may drop by the Center this Saturday.  (Maeda Ryo  6P is coming at the end of the month – this is someone else.)  I’ll send out more information if I get it.

We will also be doing outreach at the Bon Odori festival at the Seattle Buddhist Church, 1427 S Main St, Seattle, WA 98144.  Aki, John Richards, and Dave Snow will be there on Saturday, from 3-8 p.m.  We could use another volunteer on Sunday from 4-8 to help Aki and me.  Let me know if you can help out.  More info here:

[Seattle Go Center] Re: Wednesday SDK Class will be with Peter Nelson

Hi all,

Tomorrow (Wednesday, July 13th) I'd like to talk a bit about not-specifically-Go related topics that affect how we learn/study the game. For examples:

Do you play better after eating a good breakfast/lunch/dinner?
Do you retain more from your studying after getting a good night's sleep?
How can you use your commute (or other "wasted" time) to improve at Go?
Which is more effective: studying for three hours on one day, or studying for half an hour once per day for six days?

Disclaimer: I will be offering no concrete answers to these questions (though I will gladly offer my own anecdata), but I hope that at the end of the discussion you'll think a bit more critically about how you approach the game.

Also, feel free to bring a game to review (or a position, joseki/shape question, or any other question, or anything else at all) for when our discussion concludes in case we have extra time.

Hope to see you tomorrow at 7pm!

Peter Nelson
