[Seattle Go Center] Jin Chen Tournament this Sunday Jan 3, 2016

Dear Go Players,

The Jin Chen Tournament is coming up this Sunday, Jan 3, 2016, with registration from 10 – 10:45 am.  This tournament is usually our biggest tournament of the year, but since we had a very large Anniversary Tournament last fall, with 48 players, I am not sure if this tournament will be the largest.  But it will be big, with a total prize pool of $1050, and both Open and Handicapped Sections.  Anybody who can finish a 19x19 game is welcome to play. The fee is $15 general admission and $10 for youth and for voting members. (Youth are under 18, voting members have yearly or lifetime memberships.)

This is an AGA (American Go Association)  rated tournament.  Please make sure your AGA membership is current.  New members can join the AGA online at https://www.usgo.org/members/join.  We can also enroll you in the AGA at the Go Center, with payment ($30) by cash or check.  But please come early to do that.

First round starts at 11 am.  Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner.  If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

First prize for the Open Section (all even games) will be $300.  The Open Section will be limited to the top 8 players who register by 10:45 am.   All others will be moved to the Handicapped Section. Player’s strength will be determined by the players AGA rating, or if they are international visitors, by the decision of the Tournament Director.

Mark Lee is coming to Seattle to play in the tournament, and to teach on Monday evening, Jan. 4, and on Tuesday, Jan. 5.  Since Mark is rated at AGA +10.000 we expect he will be playing in the Open Section!

We hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Party Tomorrow Dec. 29!

Dear Members,

Our annual Holiday Party will be tomorrow, Tuesday, Dec. 29, starting at 6:00 p.m.   This is a potluck event, so please bring some food or drink to share.  We will have a banquet permit for beer, wine and sake.  (If you don’t know what to bring, let me remind you that there is a Trader Joe’s in the neighborhood.  I’m sure you could find some inspiration there.)  We will be playing Go, and Sonny Cho will continue with teaching the Tesuji problems.  While the party starts at 6 pm, we will open at 1 pm, as usual.

We will also have a short fundraising speech:  The Seattle Go Center depends on donations of both time and money from our members.  This allows us to continue our frequent outreach projects, the free 10 visit passes to all new members, and the free classes to all members. We usually collect more money from donations than we do from memberships.  Please help to continue that tradition if you can.  Your contribution is tax deductible if you itemize your deductions on your federal tax.  You may donate in person on Tuesday with cash or checks, or online at:

http://www.seattlego.org/donate/

We hope to see you soon!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Tesuji Night Monday Dec. 28 7-9 pm

Dear Go Players,

Sonny Cho has volunteered to teach next Monday evening, Dec. 28, while Nick is on holiday.  He will be continuing the Tesuji Go Problems that Yoonyoung Kim 4P started during her workshop.  This free class is open to everybody – you do not have to be a workshop attendee.  The class should be good for both DDK and SDK students.  Please note that the class starts at 7 – not the usual 6:30 p.m.

Sonny will also be at the Go Center on Tuesday evening, Dec. 29, if you want to continue with the problems.  This is also the evening of our pot-luck holiday party, but you can do both things.

If you attended the workshop, you have the problems already, but we have enlarged them to make them easier to read, and we also edited some confusing problems out of the collection.  Each of our pages has a half page from the original collection. The problems are in a pdf file at this link below:

[Seattle Go Center] AGA rated Self-Pair games anytime at the Seattle Go Center

We've had available for sometime the ability to submit individual self-pair rated games, but no one has yet taken advantage -- until this past Tuesday. Yay.

This past week, some Tuesday night players played a self-paired rated game and have submitted their results to be entered into the AGA ratings database. As the Self-Pair TD, I've just submitted those game results, and you should soon see them posted here (it could take up to a week to show up):

There are slips on the front desk with instructions and requirements. Games can be played anytime throughout the week, and the TD need not be present (the Go Center manager or other members should be sufficient). Players must have current AGA membership.

Place the completed game result slip in the jar on the desk, and I'll periodically gather them and submit the results to be rated.

Take full advantage of your AGA membership and get your games rated, keeping your own public rating up-to-date. No need to wait for the monthly ratings tournament. Play often and have fun either way, or do both and play even more games. One of the best ways to improve, is to play and play often. Make those rated games and keep track of your progress over time (but never worry about single loses or wins or small streaks, we're in it for the long haul).

Get yourself on the national top 10 list too :)

And here's another valuable resource for tracking your progress and games:

[Seattle Go Center] Simultaneous Games on Tuesday Dec. 16

Dear Go Players,

Our guests from Korea will be playing simultaneous games on Tuesday Evening, Dec. 15.  There are sign-up sheets on the second desk at the main room entrance.  (The desk we keep the red SDK class file on.)  Or you can email me with reservations.

Yoonyoung Kim 4P will be starting at 6:30 p.m.  Hyunwoo Kim will be starting at 7:00 p.m.  Did I mention that Yoonyoung is really strong?  She beat a (male) 9 Dan Korean Pro in a tournament game last Monday.  Hyunwoo attended the Baduk Studies program at Myongji University in Korea, and speaks very good English.

[Seattle Go Center] Special Sunday Workshop Deal - Dec. 13

Dear Go Players,

You can take the Yoonyoung Kim 4P workshop on Sunday for the day rate of $22.50  (voting members and students) and $35 (all others).  This is a great opportunity, with a great teaching ratio, since we have three teachers.  The workshop is taught in English.

The topics will be:

Tesujis (including “Learning to escape with good shape”)

Reductions (they are doing invasions today)

Student questions and game reviews

Plus, Ms. Kim will review her recent tournament game with Ahn Jo Young 9P.  This is breaking news:  she beat Ahn Jo Young this Monday.  He is a very strong player, winner of the BC Cup in 2004.  He has beaten Gu Li from China several times in tournaments.  His name is also written as An Cho-yeong.

The workshop has three teachers:  Yoonyoung Kim, Hyunwoo Kim, who completed the Baduk Studies program at Myongji University, and our own Sonny Cho, 6d.  We will have fresh bagels in the morning.

We hope you can come!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Workshop and Pair Go this weekend Dec. 12 - 13

Dear Members,

The Go Center will be closed to casual play this Saturday, due to some special events.

Our workshop with two very strong players from Korea, Ms. Yoonyoung Kim 4P, and Mr. Hyunwoo Kim, is this weekend, starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 12.  You can register on the day of the workshop, or sign up and pay on-line here:

http://www.seattlego.org/2015/12/01/yoonyoung-kim-3p-wkshp/

These teachers come highly recommended by the Korean Amateur Baduk Association.  It is possible to take the workshop for one day, and pay half price, if you pay in person.  Our guests will also be playing simultaneous teaching games on Tuesday evening for $10, starting at 6:30 and 7:00.

On Saturday, the workshop runs from 9:00 am  – 4:00 pm, with a break for lunch.  The workshop ends at 4:00, to give you time to get ready for the Pair Go Tournament, which has registration from 6:00 pm to 6:45 pm, with the first round starting at 7:00 pm.  Fancy cake and fruit will be served around 8:30.

[Seattle Go Center] Tuesday Report

Dear Go Players,

We had a big crowd at the Go Center the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, including 4 new players and some visitors.  Last Tuesday started slow, but people kept showing up, and we still had 11 players at 10 p.m.  A volunteer kept the Go Center open late.   I don’t know how big our crowd will be this Tuesday, but I’m sure you will find a game.

We will also be practicing Pair Go, since the gala tournament is this Saturday, Dec. 12!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Counting!

Hey Everyone!

There are only TWO Double-Digit Kyu classes left in 2015 (one today and one on December 14th) and I want to make them extra special. So, this next class is going to be on counting. I fully admit that I am no authority on counting games, but I am aware that my counting skills are considerably above the average kyu player. I will try to teach you all of the counting tricks I know so that you each have a better idea of what is going on in your own games. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday Dec. 6

Dear Members,

Welcome to December! We have the Monthly Ratings Tournament happening this Sunday, Dec. 6

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit. If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am. Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner. If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

The workshop will be conducted in English and has two teachers, Ms. Yoonyoung Kim, a professional 3 dan, and Mr. Hyunwoo Kim, a former insei who majored in Baduk Studies at Myongji University, Korea. $70 general fee, $45 for students and voting members. This workshop was made possible by the Korean Amateur Baduk Association (KABA) – that is why the fees are quite low.

Our guests from Korea will also be coming to the Pair Go Tournament on Saturday Evening,  Dec. 12.  (But they will not be competing as a pair!)  And they will be playing simultaneous games on Tuesday, Dec. 15, in the evening.

To register for the workshop, please follow this link:

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Coverage needed for Bellevue Meetup this week

Hi folks. I can't make it to the Bellevue meetup this week. To avoid a cancellation, we're looking for a volunteer to show up at Crossroads mall at 6:00, and stay till 8:00 or 8:30. Let me know if anyone's available.

Thank you,
Thane
