[Seattle Go Center] Open Tuesdays 3-9 pm and Saturdays 1-6 pm

Dear Go Players,

You may have heard that after almost 15 months, the Seattle Go Center is reopening with COVID precautions.  This is a partial opening, restricted to those who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.  We will save the Grand Reopening for later, when our young players have access to vaccinations.  Please wear your masks, and come dressed for outside temperatures (the windows will be open).

We will be open on Tuesdays  from 3 pm to 9 pm, starting tomorrow June 1, and Saturdays from 1 pm to 6 pm.  Our Program Manager, Kyle Burg, will be staying away this week as he waits for his vaccination to be complete.  Mike Malveaux and I will be at the Go Center.  Volunteers to help teach people who have only played online will most welcome. (Do you remember how to hold a stone? 😊)

Meanwhile, our online programs using Zoom and OGS will continue on Tuesdays (games) and Thursdays (beginner lessons).  More schedule information is on our website home page.

We hope to see you soon.

Best,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Vaccinated Volunteers Needed for Cleanup on Friday

Dear Members,

I’m looking for a few volunteers to help prepare the Go Center for our reopening on Tuesday, June 1.  I’m hoping to get the work done in the daytime tomorrow, Friday May 28.  My list includes: washing the inside of our windows, and clipping, raking and sweeping outside. The stones have already been washed.  I’ll probably be starting around 9:30 a.m.  Let me know if you can help!

Best,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Reopening of Go Center Scheduled for June 1, 2021

Dear Go Players,

We are very pleased to announce that the Seattle Go Center will be reopening in June 2021 with COVID-19 precautions, including masks. We will be open on Tuesdays from 3-9 p.m., and Saturdays from 1-6 p.m.   The windows will be open, so come dressed for outside temperatures.   Only two boards will be at each eight foot table.

Until we fully re-open, we ask that in addition to the regular Code of Conduct, you acknowledge the following:

  • We ask that unvaccinated people do not come to the Seattle Go Center.  (We are sorry that this means that many young players cannot attend until after vaccinations for youth become available.)
  • There will be no food eating inside the premises.
  • Wearing a mask is required at all times from entering the premises until leaving, unless you are on the roof deck.
  • You may consume drinks inside but must return your face mask to its functioning position after each sip.
  • Managers may add or change requirements in response to ongoing developments related to COVID.

Everybody will be asked to sign in with their name only at the front desk.  But we ask that they also update their membership forms, which include contact information, agreement to the Code of Conduct, and agreement to the COVID-19 precautions above.  Those forms will be kept in the office.  In general, we will participate in contact tracing of COVID infections by the King County Health Department, but members can opt out of contact tracing on the membership form if they want.

Our online programs, such as the popular Tuesday Zoom meetup, and the Thursday Beginner’s Lessons will continue this summer, and probably longer.  We are looking for ways to integrate them with our face to face events.

Cheers,

Brian

Join Zoom Meeting at 2 pm

https://us06web.zoom.us/j/89155870471

Dear Go Center Members,

Here’s a reminder that the Annual Meeting of the Seattle Go Center (formal name: Nihon Ki-in Go Institute of the West) will be held in cyberspace because of COVID-19 precautions.  We will be meeting via Zoom on Sunday, May 23 at 2:00 p.m.  The Zoom link is above.

If you cannot attend, and you are a voting member of the Go Center (people with quarterly, yearly and lifetime memberships) please give your proxy for voting to somebody who will attend the meeting, and notify me by email at manager@seattlego.org.  This will help us meet our quorum requirements.

WE WILL BE ANNOUNCING OUR PLANS FOR RE-OPENING WITH COVID PRECAUTIONS AT THIS MEETING!   There will also be reports on the last year, and on our continuing progress to develop the Go Center property.  The annual meeting is open to all members and friends of the Seattle Go Center.

Voting members will be asked to vote on three positions for the Board of Directors.  We have 9 Directors; each year we elect three people to three year terms.  This year, Chris Kirschner, Solomon Choe, and Oren Laskin have been nominated for the positions.  If you are also interested in running for the Board, either this year or next, please contact me at email above.

We hope to see you today!

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Building Development Update -- MAY 2021

Dear Members:

We update the membership periodically on the site development project.  This is an update since FEB 2021 for the annual meeting on Sunday.  First, I'll provide an update for the last three months, and later are two sections that repeat through all updates on background and looking forward.

THREE MONTH UPDATE.  The building development deal is progressing quite well, especially in the times of COVID and slowed down city processes for big construction projects.  We chose an architect firm to help us design the new premises in the new building.  Because construction wouldn't start before MAR 2022, and our Tenant Improvements buildout wouldn't start before summer 2024, we're just doing enough design now to inform the building (for example, can we move a sewer stack, move an entrance, or where we need kitchen venting).  After the sale closes we'll do most of the design work toward final plans.

We are working on bylaws for a new 501c4 non-profit corp, Iwamoto Go Outreach Foundation (IGO Foundation, IGOF) to manage the endowment the Nihon Ki-in leaves to promote Iwamoto Sensei's mission in North America and in particular in the Seattle area.  The Nihon Ki-in approved the mission statement and articles of incorporation for IGOF already.  While we will replace our rental income with an endowment, we need to continually raise funds each year as we do now to have enough funding.

Financially we are doing well with loans and donations for this project that cover cash flow until the deal closes.  We think we have enough funding now until we close the sale without taking more loans due to very generous help from one donor.

SAME BACKGROUND.  We've discussed previously that the Board of the Seattle Go Center has been considering options for maintaining a thriving Seattle Go Center.  Due to new high-density zoning, increased property values, higher property taxes and other costs, our board started researching scenarios and looking for an opportunity to develop the Go Center property in 2017.  Our property is owned by the Nihon Ki-in in Japan, who give us free rent.  The ideal outcome would be to sell the property to a developer who would give us a "free" lease for 99 years and invest the sale proceeds as an endowment to operate the Seattle Go Center.

We found and presented such a deal to the Nihon Ki-in in Tokyo in DEC 2019, and they signed a Purchase and Sales Agreement (PSA).  It is much better than obtained by other go centers that Iwamoto Sensei created in his mission to spread peace and cultural awareness through Go.  The Nihon Ki-in is very happy with our efforts and they agreed to all our requests on how to handle the sale and proceeds.

SAME FUTURE STATEMENT.  Given construction permitting processes in Seattle at this time, construction likely would not start middle to late 2022.  At that time, we would use sale proceeds to rent a space for a couple of years during construction, and then we would move back to the current location on the second floor in a new space we design.

Our buyer is very professional and pleasant to work with, and they have been very reasonable in dealing with us.

If you have any questions, feel free to send them to billchiles-gocenter@hotmail.com .

Cheers,

Bill Chiles
