[Seattle Go Center] Nick Sibicky AGA Teacher of the Year; Go Basics on Monday

Nick Sibicky won AGA Teacher of the Year!
https://www.usgo.org/news/2019/05/nick-sibicky-named-agf-teacher-of-the-year/

Since September 26, 2011, Nick has been teaching a Monday evening "double digit kyu" class, aimed at players roughly 20k to 5k in strength.  He records the lectures and posts them on his YouTube channel:
https://www.youtube.com/nicksibicky
With 350 videos and counting, this brings more visibility to our game, and provides a helpful, accessible resource when people search for "Game of Go".  In the past year, three or four times I've heard visitors to the Go Center say that Nick's channel helped them develop interest in Go, or helped them find out about the Go Center.
So congratulations Nick!  You've earned that award.  Enjoy your complementary stay at the Go Congress, and thanks for all your hard work teaching!

Nick's DDK class is on summer break.  Drew is filling in with a Go Basics class, intended for players about 25k to 10k, on the same Monday 6:30-8:30 PM schedule.  Tomorrow's topic:  Basic Shapes
I saw Drew talk about basic shapes last summer, and (even at a nominal strength of 5k) I found it very helpful.  Enthusiastically recommended!

See you soon at the Go Center,

P.S. - What's the real reason Hamlet was so concerned about life and death?

(Hamlet thought 2B was a reasonable opening move.)

[Seattle Go Center] Monthly Tournament - 10 Days

Tournament time!

The first Sunday of the month, come play in the free monthly ratings tournament!
It's a great way to test yourself with intense, fun, face-to-face Go.  No charge to play, but up-to-date AGA membership is required (see http://www.usgo.org/join-now for info), and Go Center admissions policies apply (see https://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details).

Register in person, 10:00 - 10:45 AM.  If you're running late, let the Tournament Director know (206-545-1424), and you can probably be paired into the first round.  (If you call in, your clock starts 10 min. into the 1st round; and if you're not present after 30 min., you forfeit.  If you come before 12:30, you can probably play in the 2nd round.)

First round starts at 11:00 AM.  Second round starts by 1:30 PM, but may start sooner.  You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director your plans.  More details -- www.SeattleGo.org/events

[Seattle Go Center] Summer schedule (Mon.: Go Basics, Wed.: closed, Thu.: open 2pm)

Greetings Go fans,

Our website (www.SeattleGo.org) now reflects our weekly schedule for July and August:

Sun. - Closed (except for tournaments July 7 and Aug. 4).

Mon. - "Go Basics" with Drew Barnett, 6:30-8:30 PM, beginning July 1.
Drew's intended syllabus: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/seattlego/URFIDWdQjEU

Tue. - 1:00-10:00 PM, the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America! (Maybe even the Western Hemisphere!) Yesterday that was even more true than usual -- we had about 35 people. (I'd have more confidence in that number, but some of you folks never sign in. I know it was more that 32, and probably less than 38.) Instruction for beginners is available after 3:00, and Chris Kirschner's delicious bread comes out of the oven around 5:30.

Wed. - Closed (until September).

Thu. - Open 2:00-9:00 PM. Bob Fan opens at 2:00, and Larry Eclipse takes over around 5:00. "Complete Beginners" class with Larry, 6:30-8:30, is a good intro for folks who have never played.

Fri. - Closed.

Sat. - Open 1:00-8:00 PM with Dennis Wheeler; instruction for new players is available. On the 3rd Saturday of the month (July 20, Aug. 17), Brandon Barton leads a Shogi meetup at the Go Center, 1:00-5:00. There's also a Meetup.com group for Shogi -- https://www.meetup.com/Seattle-Shogi-Meetup/

Nick Sibicky's "DDK" lectures will return on Mondays in September; meanwhile, you can see his stuff at https://www.youtube.com/NickSibicky (Congrats again on earning AGA Teacher of the Year, Nick!!)

[Seattle Go Center] Updates re: Mon & Wed nights

Hey Go fans,

With Nick taking off for the summer, management and I have been discussing the situation and I've decided to take over the Monday night slot through the end of August. Unfortunately, this means that the Wednesday night AI study group will be suspended, but we hope that this will give me some time to collect what we've been working on and build a more formal curriculum for when we return in September. If you are interested in our AI learning research and can't wait until then, we have a Slack channel you can join <http://seago-deep.slack.com/> or you can reach me by email directly.

With that out of the way, let's talk Monday nights! From now until the end of August, I plan on being at the Go Center Monday nights from 6:30-8:30 (hopefully one hour lecture, one hour play time). As it stands, I have the following series of lectures planned out:

7/1 - Basic Shapes
7/8 - Tewari (Move Order) Analysis
7/15 - When to Tenuki
7/22 - Evaluating Ko & Ko Threats
7/29 - 3-5 and 4-5 Joseki Overview
8/5 - Cosmic Fuseki (and What to Do)
8/12 - How to Keep Your Cool in a Fight
8/19 - TBD
8/25 - TBD

These will primarily be aimed at lower DDK-strength players, but of course upper DDK players are more than welcome. That said, some of these lectures are specifically aimed at players of 19x19 boards only, so if you are a DDK player who still plays mostly or entirely on smaller boards, those lectures may naturally be of less value to you. Thematically, later lectures will build off of some of the ideas of earlier lectures, but material is divided up in such a way as to make each unit individually digestible, and attending every week is by no means necessary to get something out of them.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to Mike or me. Hope to see you there!

-Drew

[Seattle Go Center] Schedule Changes for Summer

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Summer is upon us, and with it, some changes to our regular weekly schedule.

Wednesdays -- Today (6:30-8:30 PM) is the last day (until early September) of Programming Go AI, led by Drew and Eric. It has been popular and successful, and we expect to reboot it shortly after Labor Day, so watch for announcements in August. So what will be happening at the Go Center on Wednesdays? Right now, I'm not sure. I am trying to arrange a class for SDK players; and if that doesn't happen, then maybe we'll be open just for friendly games. Or maybe we'll be closed on Wednesdays over the summer. I should have an announcement by the weekend, one way or another.

Thursdays -- Mingcun Fan will be opening the Go Center at 2:00 PM on Thursdays, and Larry Eclipse will be teaching the Complete Beginners class, 6:30-8:30 PM. The Go Center will close at 9:00 PM on Thursdays (or a little earlier if attendance is light).

Fridays -- closed (no change).

Saturdays -- Open 1:00-8:00 PM with Dennis Wheeler; including Shogi with Brandon on the 3rd Saturday. We'll be suspending the 2nd Saturday Speed League Go tournaments since attendance has been very light.

Sundays -- closed, except for tournaments on the 1st Sunday of the month (no change).

Mondays -- Nick Sibicky is on summer break, and his DDK lectures are on hiatus until early September. Drew Barnett is stepping forward with a series of lectures on the fundamentals of Go on Mondays, which will be quite edifying. I think it will be the same 6:30-8:30 PM time slot, so watch for a more detailed announcement in a couple of days as Drew gets his plans fleshed out.

Tuesdays -- (no change) The Go Center will be open for the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (and possibly the Western Hemisphere), 1:00-10:00 PM, with informal instruction for beginners available after 3:00 PM, and Chris K.'s marvelous fresh bread most Tuesdays (I'm sure he'll be in Wisconsin in for a couple of weeks in July, during the Go Congress).

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Andrew Jackson Can't at Go

Hey Go Fans-
Tomorrow will be the FINAL DDK Class before our summer break. I know I previously told you that we would be going until the end of the month. But I lied. Lied real bad. Anyway, as is been tradition for the past couple of years, I asked Andrew Jackson to come play an exhibition game with me before you all. But he's got a bad case of children. Instead, we are tapping the bullpen and Lucy Wang agreed to play in his place. So I present to you: Lucy Wang Can at Go!  We'll have a fun game, for sure. You won't want to miss this finale!

[Seattle Go Center] Speed League - 3 Days

The Go Center will be open Saturday, 1:00 - 8:00 PM. Saturdays are often well attended, and a good day for finding a casual game. This is the second Saturday of the month, so it's time for Speed League -- three rounds of competitive Go, with breathlessly exciting time limits! (10 minutes, + 3 x 20 seconds byo-yomi.) Register 1:15 - 1:45, and the first round starts by 2:00. The third round is usually finished by 4:00 or 4:15.

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo - 3 Days

Our annual Rengo shindig will be Saturday, June 8. (If you're wondering "What is Rengo?", it's a kind of team Go, where a team of two players faces off against another pair of players; and it's a *lot* of fun!) If you want to play but don't have a partner, that's ok -- we'll be forming teams at the event. $10 per player (or $5 for youth 17 or younger, and for Go Center voting members) gains entry to the tournament, plus decadent dessert and a chance to win prizes: books on Go! Register 5:30-6:00 PM. The first round begins a few minutes after 6:00, and we're generally done about 10:00 PM.

Hey Go Fans-
This week our class will resume with an attacking workshop. However, this isn't like any other "attacking" workshop. The board positions we are going to analyze have all been run through strong AIs, and the results are surprising! Come learn a new approach to finding key points to launch attacks! I hope to see you there!
