[ORE] A Question about Mandatory Power

As the subject says, I've a question about Mandatory Power. The way it's worded, it seems to make a power free for that given Archetype. For an example, all vampires need to drink blood to heal, or can fly. Am I understanding this correctly?

Thanks for looking.

[Seattle Go Center] Help with outreach - July 7 & 8 - Bellevue (Japan Fair)

Hello, Go enthusiasts!

A few words about teaching Go, and a plea for volunteers.

Seattle Go Center's mission is to teach and promote the game of Go.  So we go to various events, and reach out to
people who are not yet Go players, and teach them to play Go.  We call this "outreach".  (Because we're "reaching out".
And calling it "two-space extension" wouldn't make sense to anyone except us.)

If you've never staffed a Go outreach table, you should do it!  Don't worry about not being a good enough player.  With
beginners, an encouraging smile is **much** more important than an encyclopedic knowledge of joseki or ability to read
a tricky tsumego.  If you know what a liberty is and you can recognize when stones have been captured, then you know
enough to teach beginners.  Three benefits to you:  More Go players; the smiles when people "get it"; and a deeper
understanding of Go.  (I've found the old saying to mostly be true:  You don't **really** understand something until you
teach it to someone else.)

I remember my first time teaching strangers, though details are hazy.  I probably was around 20k; certainly not yet
15k.  (But I'd never played in a tournament, and online Go was still in the future, so who knows?)  I had enjoyed a
decent-size Go community in Chicago, with regular game nights at a cafe; and when I moved to Louisville, I missed it
badly.  So I took my board and stones, and a "borrowed" copy of Appreciating Famous Games (sorry, John!) to a
coffeehouse on Bardstown Road, and replayed old games until someone asked me what I was doing.

For many years at the Go Center, we've largely used variants of the "First Capture" or "Capture Go" method espoused by
Yasuda-sensei, 9P who became interested in teaching children to play.  It's easy to learn, and helps people get playing
quickly.  The AGA has some info:
http://www.usgo.org/capture-game-teaching-method
And we'll show it to you in person, of course!

We've got a perfect opportunity coming up for helping with outreach!  Japan Fair showcases "traditional and modern
Japanese arts and culture", and we'll have a booth.  Admission is free, and there will be time to look around at the other
booths, see some of the live performances, and sample some Japanese festival food.

Saturday, July 7th, 10 AM - 6 PM
Sunday, July 8th, 10 AM - 5 PM
Meydenbauer Center, 11100 NE 6th St., Bellevue, WA 98004

If you can help out for a few hours, please email me.  And thanks for supporting Go!

All the best,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

Thanks again, Ned!

[Seattle Go Center] Weekly Snapback (Tourn. Sun. July 1; social media photos; other places to Go)

Good afternoon Go fans,

I dislike emailing y'all twice in a day, but astute readers have reminded me of vital points I'd neglected; so here GOes.

**Monthly Ratings Tournament**
The tournament scheduled for Sunday, July 1 is still happening. Join us at the Go Center for three rounds of face-to-face
GO intensity! There's no cost to play, but the Center's day use fee applies (first 10 visits free; younger than 18 are free;
voting Go Center members don't have to pay; other than that, $5 per day or 10-visits card for $35) and players need
current membership in the American Go Association. It's easy to join or renew online (see http://www.usgo.org/join-
aga-today
for details), or you can do it in person at the Go Center (in that case, please arrive a little early).
Registration for the tournament is 10:00 - 10:45. First round starts at 11:00. You don't have to play all 3 rounds;
just let the tournament director know your intentions. For more details, see http://www.seattlego.org/events/

**Photos on Social Media**
I need your permission to use your likeness on social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc. If I forget to
ask, please remind me! And, please always feel comfortable indicating not to use your photo, for any reason. (You can
tell me the reason if you wish, but you don't have to.) Maybe you work in covert ops, and you don't want facial
recognition software to pinpoint your location, and you could tell me more but then you'd have to kill me. That's so none
of my business, and I still want you feeling comfortable at the Go Center.

**Other Go Places, Wed. and Thu.**
If you'd like to sit down for a game of Go, but you're having trouble making it to the Go Center, we also play:
Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00 PM, at Uwajimaya, 600 5th Ave. S., Seattle 98104;
Thursdays, 4:00-9:00 PM, at Couth Buzzard Books, 8310 Greenwood Ave. N., Seattle 198103

Thanks for your attention. See you at the Go Center!

[Seattle Go Center] Advanced Go Class tonight

Hello, "Advanced Goers" and other folks who are interested,

Tonight we'll have our third class. We'll continue studying from AlphaGo, especially for the skill of global controlling, along with other strategies. For the simul games and reviews, we'll be focused on the post-beginning phase, using a new format.

See you at 7!

Best,
Yue

[Seattle Go Center] Weakly Kibitzer -- "Advanced Go" tonight; "Breaking into SDK" canceled; etc. )

Sorry about that unterminated parenthesis last time.  I was in a hurry, and forgot to finish the subject line.  Hopefully it
didn't give nightmares to any Lisp programmers here.

**Breaking Into SDK Thursdays**
The "Breaking Into SDK" class will no longer be happening on Thursdays because Jonathan Cheng no longer available.  It
had a good run, and I'll be working to get something similar into that schedule slot.  (Any players stronger than, say, 3k
who want to try their hand at teaching, let me know.)
The Thursday classes for "Complete Beginners" are still going (with Larry Eclipse, 6:30 - 9:00 PM).

**Advanced Go Wednesdays and Sundays**
There have been two sessions of Yue Zhang's "Advanced Go" class (for players 9k - 6d), and there are six left to go,
including tonight at 7:00 PM.  Sign up in person, or at http://www.seattlego.org/advanced-go-class-june-july-2018/

**Social Media stuff**
I keep forgetting to mention --
If you use Facebook, the Go Center has a page:  https://www.facebook.com/SeattleGoCenter/
If you use Twitter, the Go Center has a feed:  @SeattleGoCenter
If you use Instagram, I'm trying to start a feed, but I haven't yet figured out to start an account that's not my personal
account.  Meanwhile, I'm using my brand-new personal  Instagram account to put up occasional shots of stuff at the
Center:  https://www.instagram.com/comeplaygo/ - @ComePlayGo (If you're adept at Instagram and feel like teaching
an old dog new tricks, please get in touch!)

**Go Fiction**
Emma Huang shared with us a story she wrote, which I found delightfully entertaining.  It's on Facebook in the Seattle
Go Center "notes" section.  (There's probably a way to paste a working direct link, but that "old dog vs. new trick"
schtick applies here too.  Ask me about rec.games.go and playing on Go servers via Telnet sometime!  "Back in my day,
we had social media, but without all these frippery gew-gaws" etc.)

**Volunteers**
The Go Center is doing outreach at a couple of weekend Japanese cultural festivals in July:
Sat. 7-7 and Sun. 7-8 - Japan Fair 2018 - Bellevue - http://japanfairus.org/
Sat. 7-21 and Sun. 7-22 - Bon Odori festival - International District - https://seattlebetsuin.com/index.php/bon-odori-
festival/

Mark your calendars, and watch for a couple of emails soon about these events.

**Tuesdays**
Still going strong!  (Chris K.'s bread, too!)  I'm not sure exactly why, but we keep having 25 players.  An encouraging
thing is that it's been a mixture of regulars, brand new players, and people in between -- they get to the Center a couple
of times a year, or once every couple of years.  I'm really, really glad we're still here for all of the above!

There's more to say, but this is already longer than usual.  Not every game has to end in counting.  Thanks for your
attention!

See you at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

PS - Ned Beebe shared this insight from the Psykotherapy Diagnostic Manual:
The tendency to reduce complex situations to terms of black and white, life or death, is a symptom of ko-dependency.
One of the signs of being in a ko-dependent relationship is getting caught in a series of threats and struggles with each
other.

Thanks Ned!  ;-D

[Seattle Go Center] Mon. and Tue.

Good morning fellow Go enthusiasts,

If you'd like to play Go, but you can't seem to make it to the Go Center, try stopping in at:
Zoka Coffee, 2200 N. 56th St., Seattle 98103 -- Mondays and Fridays, 9:00 AM - 12 noon; or
Hurry Curry, 825 Harrison St., Seattle 98109 -- Mondays 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Meanwhile, back at the Go Center:
Today is Nick Sibicky's last "Double Digit Kyu" class before he goes on summer vacation, so be at the Center 6:30 -

Tomorrow, come to the Go Center for fresh bread and "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America"!
Hmm, actually, we probably can say "Western Hemisphere".  Iwamoto-sensei built a Go Center in Sao Paulo.  Does
anyone know whether they hold weekly meetings?

Hope to see you at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

PS - Why should Go players avoid underwear, and "go commando"?

(There's death in the Hanes! They wrap around.)
Ouch. Thanks, Ned!

Hi, students of the "Advanced Go Class"

We have had a great time for our first class on Jun. 20th! Tonight we'll have our second class. During the lecture part, we'll review a few games between AlphaGo and strong pros, from which we'll learn more about stones' efficiency and the timing for tenuki. After the lecture, we'll have games and reviews. For those who missed the first class, you are welcome to join us tonight.

Best,
Yue

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Cho Hun-hyun (LAST NICK SIBICKY FOR SUMMER!)

Greetings Go Fans-
Tomorrow evening is my last class teaching at the Go Center for the summer. The class will continue while I am away on vacation, but otherwise, I don't plan to see you all until September.

Tomorrow's class will feature a lecture on one of the most important Go players in modern history, Cho Hun-hyun. Nicknamed "The God of War," Cho became Korea's first 9-dan player, and was the first player to win 11 international titles. I've never dedicated a full lecture to him before, and am excited to do so! I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Advanced Go still available, last DDK, no SDK, yes Beginner

Hi Go Folks,

Yue Zhang's "Advanced Go" for players 9k - 6d had seven eager students on Wednesday. Next sessions are Sunday,
June 24 and Wednesday, June 27. You still can sign up for some or all of the remaining sessions:
http://www.seattlego.org/2018/06/15/advanced-go-class/

The Go Center will be open tomorrow, 1 PM - 8 PM. Come on in for a game, even if you've never played before. We
love teaching new players.

Monday, June 25, Nick Sibicky holds the DDK Class at 6:30 PM. This is the last chance to see him teaching for a while,
because he's taking a break for the summer. (I believe Drew Barnett has plans for this time slot, so watch for an
announcement!)

Thursday, June 28, Jonathan Cheng won't be available for the "Breaking Into SDK" class; so that's cancelled, unless
another teacher invades the board. Beginner lessons with Larry Eclipse at 6:30 is still a GO.

See you at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] Advanced Go Class starts today!

Hello everyone,

For the "Advanced Go Class" series, we will have our first gathering tonight at 7pm. For those who are interested but have not got a chance to register online, you are more than welcome to attend and register on site. This four-week-long class series will be a great opportunity for every Go player who is eager to improve his/her Go skill and, more importantly, to significantly advance his/her understanding of the game.

During each 2.5-hour-long class, every student will be actively engaged in all activities. For today's class, at first I will give a lecture on how we should view the value of each move, and, the change of the value of each move as the game proceeds. After that, I will play simul games with every student (with no handicaps). The purpose of the simul games is not to win and we do not have to finish the whole game. Instead, the purpose is to discover the weaknesses existing in everyone's play. After the openings, we'll pause and I will give reviews and point out the problematic moves. Then we'll resume and proceed to the middle games, followed by reviews..... There will be a break roughly in the middle of the class.

I look forward to seeing you tonight!

Best,
Yue Zhang

[Seattle Go Center] Advanced Go Class registration

Hello everyone,

To register for Yue Zhang's "Advanced Go Class", please fill in the form at
www.seattlego.org/advanced-go-class-june-july-2018/

In case you missed the announcement yesterday --

Yue Zhang will lead a series of classes to accelerate the learning of players 9 kyu through 6 dan.  Classes will meet twice
a week for 4 weeks, Wednesday and Sunday evenings, 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM, at the Go Center, beginning June 20, 2018
and ending July 18, 2018.  (No class Wed. July 4.)  Attend all 8 sessions for the most efficient learning!

Yue's relatively novel classes will feature whole-class lectures, games, and game reviews. Compared to traditional
teaching which emphasize whole-class lectures, the Advanced Go Class series will focus more on individualized
instruction during the games and game reviews.

Yue's individualized form of teaching is suitable for all players ranked single digit kyu up to 6 dan. It is expected that the
students who graduate from the 4-week class series will advance significantly during the upcoming Go Congress, or
another series of rated tournaments.

Tuition for the whole series of 8 classes: $200
Tuition for one or more classes separately: $35/class (select the classes with the online form)

Yue hopes to have at least six players sign up.  If you register for the whole series and, after the first class, find that it's
not for you, Yue is generously offering to refund the tuition, as long as you withdraw before the second class (June 24).

About Yue Zhang: Currently rated 7.8 in the AGA, Yue placed 1st in the 2016 Seattle Anniversary Open and the 2018
Spring Open. Yue holds a PhD from Ohio State University, and he has extensive college teaching experience.

Re: [ORE] Beta character creator

Thanks!

Another update for the ORE roller / Character creator. I finished the schema and terminal entry for hyperstats and hyperskills and started work on the Web character creator.

The in progress beta is up now and allows folks to create, edit and delete basic characters (name, stats, skills).

https://ore-roller.herokuapp.com/

The layout is simple right now, but I can create a fully costed WT character in about 5 minutes, so that's pretty cool.

The schema is also set up so that stats and skills can be changed easily, so it would be simple to create a Godlike or Reign character.

Just so everyone is clear, these are the dates of the class:
Wed. 6-20
Sun. 6-24
Wed. 6-27

[Seattle Go Center] Advanced Go with Yue Zhang

Hello Go friends,

I am pleased and excited to announce that Yue Zhang will be teaching a class at the Go Center, aimed at single-digit kyu players and dan players (up to 6 dan).  I will have a registration form up on www.SeattleGo.org soon, but I don't want to hold the announcement while I figure out how to do that -- you folks need to know about this right away, so you can plan to attend!  So, here are the details.  Enjoy!

-----
Yue Zhang offers a series of classes to accelerate the learning of players 9 kyu through 6 dan.

Classes meet twice a week for 4 weeks -- Wednesday and Sunday evenings, 7:00 PM - 9:30 PM -- at the Go Center, beginning June 20, 2018 and ending July 15, 2018. Attend all 8 sessions for the most efficient (and the most favorable pricing).

Yue's relatively novel classes will be composed of whole-class lectures, games, and game reviews. Compared to traditional teaching which emphasize whole-class lectures, the Advanced Go Class series will focus more on individualized instruction, which will be offered during the games and game reviews.

Yue's individualized form of teaching is suitable for all players ranked single digit kyu up to 6 dan. It is expected that the students who graduate from the 4-week class series will advance significantly during the upcoming Go Congress, or another series of rated tournaments.

Register for the whole series of 8 classes: $200
Register for one or more classes separately: $35/class

Yue hopes to have at least six players sign up.  If you register for the whole series and, after the first class, find that it's not for you, Yue is generously offering to refund the tuition, as long as you withdraw before the second class (June 24).

About Yue Zhang: Currently rated 7.8 in the AGA, Yue placed 1st in the 2016 Seattle Anniversary Open and the 2018 Spring Open. Yue holds a PhD from Ohio State University, and he has extensive college teaching experience.

[Seattle Go Center] Weakly Kibitzer (usual schedule)

Hello, Go Folks!

Feedback from last week indicates that a weekly roundup would be popular, at least with some folks, so maybe I'll give
that a try, at least for now. (Let me know if you'd rather I didn't!)

Review
Saturday's "Rengo with Pie" tournament was awesome. 14 teams, 28 players. Table winners: Lusha Zhou (9k) and
Tzu-Jen Chan (3d); Yulissa Wu Lu (10k) and Lucas Wu Lu (9k); Hotaka Ozaki (3k) and Abigail Chen (20k); Joshua Yang
(11k) and Shirley Yang (30k). The AGA E-Journal published a report, and there's more detail (with a few photos) on the
Go Center web page www.SeattleGo.org

Tuesday again saw 25 players, including regulars, beginners, DDKs who've been watching Nick Sibicky on YouTube, and
a return visit from the young dan-strength player from Japan via Los Angeles. I'm not sure if he'll be back next Tuesday,
but that might be your chance to play him.

Reading Ahead
Today (Thursday), the "Complete Beginners" and "Breaking into SDK" classes scheduled; Go Center open 2 PM - 10 PM
for casual games. Saturday's also a good day to play, for all strengths; open 1 PM - 8 PM. Monday, Nick Sibicky returns
with "Tricky Tesujis part 2"; and Tuesday we'll again have the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America,
with fresh bread expected.

Sun. July 1 and August 5 -- monthly ratings tournaments.
Sat. July 7 and Sun. July 8 -- outreach booth at Japan Fair, Meydenbauer Center, Bellevue (need a few more volunteers).
Later in July -- Go Center Board of Directors meeting; US Go Congress in Virginia; outreach at Bon Odori Festival. See
http://www.seattlego.org/events/ for details.

Reminder
Teachers are available for paid private instruction -- www.seattlego.org/paid-instruction

[Seattle Go Center] Tuesday (today) -- Go and bread

Greetings Go Fans,

Today the Go Center again will host the "largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America"! (I think I'm going to
get that printed on a t-shirt.) Chris told me that fresh bread is expected, so I expect there will be freshly baked bread to
share.

I'll be there about 1 PM to open the building. We usually start seeing players and curious newcomers trickle in around 2.
The trickle swells to a torrent as people get off work, and by 6 or so, there will be 20+ Go players socializing and playing
games. It's an awesome spectacle to behold, and every time I see so many Go players gathered together, I feel
fortunate and happy.

See you at the Center,

Mike Malveaux

PS -- How many professional Go players does it take to change a light-bulb?

(Their positions have so much influence, they get the 5-dans to do it for them.)

Re: [ORE] Beta character creator

Nice first draft (at least from the git commits).  At first glance the structure looks very reasonable, especially considering that modeling an rpg game is an exercise in exceptions :)

My memory of ORE is hazy, haven't played it in several years (sadly) and it makes critiquing the structure a little moot at this point.  I will have gander at the source material and refresh my memory.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday -- Nickless today

Good morning, Go fans.

"Part 2 of Nick Sibicky's 'Tricky Tesuji' Workshop will resume next week!" So sayeth the one, the only Nick Sibicky, who
unfortunately will not be joining us for DDK Monday this evening. I'll have the building open 6 PM to 9 PM though, so
anyone who wants to play a game should come by.

And I'll set up some life & death problems from one of my favorite Go books: Liping Huang's Problem Series, Volume 1.
(That's the thin orange book.) Maybe for the sheer absurdity of it, we'll try to solve them in byo-yomi.

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo (and pie!) tomorrow, 5:30 PM

Hi everyone,

One last reminder about the event Saturday evening:
**Rengo With Pie and Coffee!**

We will be following International Pair Go rules, except that there will be no restrictions to team membership. Join us for
two rounds of pair go, fancy pie, and book prizes for every table.  You do not have to have a partner to come; we will
form more teams at the beginning of the tournament.  Registration will also be at the beginning of the tournament, from
5:30 to 6:00 p.m.  Cost: $10 per player; $5 for youth under 18, and for Voting Members of the Go Center (Lifetime,
Yearly, and Quarterly members).

[Seattle Go Center] Weekly Kibitzer (Rengo on Saturday!) (Ix-nay on Wednesday)

Hi fellow Go fans,

I probably won't actually do this weekly. It felt like this time, I had a bunch of stuff to cover, and it'd be better to give
each a sentence or two in one email, rather than sending 3 or 4 separate emails. I'll try to be brief.

Lots GOing on at the Go Center the past couple of nights! Nick Sibicky's DDK Mondays is still going strong -- five
perplexed players pored over puzzling positions as Nick trucked out treasures from his trove of tricky tesujis on June 3.
Look for the video soon on Nick Sibicky Go Lectures: https://www.youtube.com/user/nicksibicky

Tuesday, the "largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America" had 25 players in the room, including a young
(about 8 years old, I think) 4-dan from Los Angeles, and a games enthusiast from Germany. The Seattle AGA Chapter
chose Nick Wilmes to be its new representative to the AGA, and thanked Peter Nelson for his service, and bid him
farewell. Peter's moving to the Midwest soon, so we won't be seeing him around much.

Reminder -- The "Rengo with Pie and Coffee" tournament will be this Saturday, June 9, at the Go Center. Registration
starts at 5:30; play starts at 6:00. $10 registration fee ($5 for Go Center voting members and children). Bring your own
teammate, or join at team at the event. It's going to be fun, so be there if you can. (Four daring players couldn't wait for
Saturday, and played Rengo last night at the Center.) Event info: http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Schedule update -- "SDK Wednesdays" is on summer vacation, hopefully to return approximately late August, if possible.
The Go Center won't be publicly open on Wednesdays for a while, and will be available for the Paid Private Instruction
program -- see http://www.seattlego.org/paid-instruction/ to find a teacher.

Thank you to everyone who responded to the call for volunteers to staff the Go Center on July 16. It makes me feel
good, seeing how many people were ready to pitch in and help out.

[Seattle Go Center] Tonight - bread and Chapter meeting

Hi Go Fans,

The biggest weekly Go group in North America will probably be bigger than usual today.

This evening, Chris Kirschner is sharing his famous fresh bread.  Come to play Go, and stay for the bread!  Or maybe it's
the other way around.  The Go Center will open at 1:00 PM, and close at 10:00 PM.

We'll probably also be ordering pizza, because at 7:00 PM, there will be a short meeting of the Seattle AGA Chapter
(American Go Association) to elect a new representative to the national organization.  Your current representative, Peter
Nelson, will be moving from Seattle soon.  We have a new candidate for the position, Nick Wilmes.   Nick will be going to
the U.S. Go Congress in Williamsburg, VA, so he can attend the Chapter Meeting at the Congress.  But of course other
candidates for the position are welcome as well.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday TONIGHT: Tricky Tesuji

Hey Everyone-
Tonight's class will be a workshop to practice "tricky" tesujis. This will be good practice for spotting good/bad shapes on the board and how to take advantage of them. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo Tournament (and pie!), Sat. June 9

FOUR PLAYERS - TWO TEAMS - ONE LOVE

Please join us at Seattle Go Center for our Rengo tournament event:
Rengo With Pie and Coffee!
Saturday, June 9, 2018
5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.  (registration 5:30 - 6:00 p.m.)
Cost: $10; $5 for Youth (under 18) and Voting Members (Lifetime, Yearly and Quarterly Members).

Rengo is played by teams of two players, and is amazingly fun.  You can bring a partner, but you don't have to -- we will
be forming more teams at the start of the tournament.

We'll play two rounds using the International Pair Go rules at http://www.pairgo.or.jp/setumei/rule.htm except with no
restrictions on team membership.  (My favorite rule:  "During games, actions such as acupuncture and moxibustion are
forbidden."  Mostly because I don't know what "moxibustion" is.  And, I want to hear about the wild 'n' crazy Go
tournament where they also did acupuncture.  It must have happened once, or there wouldn't be a rule against it, right?)

More info is on the Go Center calendar:  http://www.seattlego.org/events/
Also on the attached poster (looks beautiful -- thanks Catherine Ozols!)

(Anyone who wants to print out a high-resolution image of the poster, email me.)

All the best,
Mike Malveaux

PS -- How many shodans does it take to change a dead lightbulb?

(If it's dead, tenuki.  Maybe you can use it as a threat later.)
