[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Honte Moves

Greetings Go Fans!
Tomorrow's class will be a workshop on playing the "proper" or "right" moves (honte, as translated from the Japanese). These moves are often related to tesuji, but are often more intuitive and based on shape than finding a tricky point for you or your opponent. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Director Elections

Dear Members,

At our Annual Membership Meeting last Sunday, March 24, we filled three positions on our nine member Board of Directors.  Since we had more candidates than positions, we had an election using secret ballots.

Hikojiro (Hiko) Katsuhisa will be continuing on the Board for another three years.  Hiko is our main liason with the Nihon Ki-in, so it is great to have him continue.  A strong Go player, he also teaches Japanese.

Lucy Lu Wang will be returning soon to Seattle, and to the Board of Directors.  She has been one of our most active and effective volunteers.  In her statement she said, “As a member of the BoD, I would like to focus on growing our community, and making the Go Center a friendly, vibrant, and diverse place for all of us to do the thing we love: playing more go.”

Peter Kron, a long time Seattle Go Player, will be joining the Board for the first time.  He has helped us at outreach events for many years, and is now the lead teacher of the Go Club at Challenger Elementary, near Issaquah.  He also teaches at the McDonald Go Club, and is a math tutor.

Rick Campbell has served 6 years on the Board, but decided not run again when he saw we had enough candidates.  I have always appreciated his advice on governance and personnel issues. Rick is a regular on Tuesdays, and at Pair Go events.

David Snow completed his three year term on the Board of Directors.  He continues to be one of our most dedicated teachers, coming to almost all of our outreach events, and also helping with the Go Class at the Northwest Chinese School in Bellevue.  Thanks David!

At the Board of Directors Meeting following the Annual Meeting, the officers of the Seattle Go Center were chosen.  They are:

President: Anne Thompson

Vice President: Bill Chiles

Secretary: Peter Kron

Treasurer: Solomon Cho

We would especially like to thank Lee Anne Bowie, our outgoing President, for her service.  Lee Anne is continuing on the board, so we won’t lose her counsel.  We are pleased that our tradition of female leadership will continue with Anne Thompson, who was most recently Secretary.  She also served on the Board from 2013 – 2016.  Bill Chiles will continue as VP.  He has been very busy with committee work.  Solomon Cho will continue as Treasurer.  Thanks to Peter Kron for taking on the Secretary position, which is really important to our organization, but sometimes a lot of work.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Time to Replenish the Rainy Day Fund!

Dear Members,

If you do not use our bathrooms, feel free to ignore this appeal.  But everybody else please pay attention! We recently emptied our "Rainy Day Fund" to deal with a problem with our sanitary sewer. Our plumber installed a new outside "cleanout" so that we can easily clear tree roots that are growing into our sewer pipe as it crosses under the parking lot.  Our previous strategy of trying to reach the tree roots from a bathroom in the building was not working. The tree roots will require on-going maintenance, but now it should be pretty easy to do.

Your donation will keep us prepared for maintenance and repair issues in the future.  We spent $8,787 on the improved plumbing.  It would be great if we could replace that amount with this fundraising drive!  You can donate on-line, thru this webpage.  You can also donate in person at the Go Center by check, cash, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays, by credit card.  We hope you can help out!

Cheers,
Brian Allen
Operations Manager

[Seattle Go Center] Statement on Property Development

Dear Members,

We would like to share this report from the Board of Directors with people who missed the Annual Meeting.

Folks,

For a variety of reasons is it prudent for us to take a long term view of managing the Seattle Go Center.  Due to rising property values and therefore rising taxes, along with an aging building, and the hassle of keeping the downstairs retail space rented out, we are investigating how to best ensure we have a Go Center here for a very long time.  Specifically, we are looking at redeveloping this site into a high or medium rise building for mixed use (retail and residential).  With consent of the Nihon Ki-in, which owns our building and property, and our Board of Directors, we are reviewing ideas and talking to developers.  We have a Property Development Committee that reports to the Board of Directors.

This is a long process, with no deadlines, and no concrete plans yet.  Even if a plan were decided in the next six months, nothing would likely happen for another two years beyond that.  Projects like this can take almost two years to plan even if you know exactly what you want to build.

We are only considering plans at the moment that would keep us up and running continuously.  If we get to a point where contracts are signed, we will keep the membership informed on plans, time lines, and impact to our daily operations.

We don't want today to go into deep details of all our learning, but we wanted people to know we need to do something eventually, hence the long lead investigations and planning.

Regards,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Pair Go / Rengo Survey

Hello, Go enthusiasts,

Your friendly neighborhood Go organizers are seeking input on our annual Rengo / Pair Go events. Please take a quick, 2-question survey on time regimes and gender in Rengo / Pair Go:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZDVCQF2

For those who don't know, "Pair Go" is a team version of Go, like "mixed doubles" in tennis. It's traditionally been a female player and a male player on one side of the board, vs. a female and male on the other side of the board. You can read more: http://www.worldpairgo.org/
Historically, "Pair Go" has been seen as a way to invite more female players into ranks of Go players. And for several years, the Go Center has held a popular Pair Go tournament in December.

Meanwhile, "Rengo" is a team version of Go, with two players on each team, but gender of the players is irrelevant. And the Go Center's popular annual June Rengo tournament is approaching.

One of the questions is about time limits on games at our Pair Go / Rengo tournaments: sudden death, or byo-yomi overtime? The other question is about the gender composition of Pair Go teams: Keep the traditional International Pair Go Association gender rules at the December event, or modify them? Survey:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZDVCQF2

Thanks for your participation! It helps us plan.

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

PS - Why did the Go player start crying?

(He was in a sente mental mood.)
Thanks, Ned!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK canceled tonight

Hello Fellow Go enthusiasts,

Due to circumstances beyond anyone's control, the DDK class tonight is canceled. Nick is fine (traveling); and his substituted, Andrew Jackson, is fine -- but apparently he'll soon be adding to his family.

The Go Center will be open 6:30-8:30 for casual games and informal study; but no DDK lecture.

Cheers,

[Seattle Go Center] Annual Meeting this Sunday, March 24 at 1:00 p.m.

Dear Members,

Here is a friendly reminder the Annual Membership Meeting will be this Sunday, March 24, starting at 1:00 p.m. Please
note the starting time -- it is earlier than what we have used some years.

We strongly encourage voting members who are not coming to the meeting to give their written proxy to a voting
member who is coming, so that we can meet our quorum requirements. This can be done with email.

The meeting will be at the Go Center, and include a slide show, yearly reports, election of three members of the Board of
Directors, and snacks. The meeting will last about an hour, and will be followed by a meeting of the Board of Directors.
If you are not elected to the Board of Directors, you may spend the rest of the afternoon playing Go.

The Seattle Go Center has nine Directors. Each Director has a term of three years. This meeting, three positions will
be filled. The Directors are elected by "voting members": lifetime members, yearly members and quarterly
members who have had a membership for at least 93 days. 10-visit members and new members are welcome at the
meeting, but they cannot vote.

If you are interested in standing for the Board of Directors, please contact me, Brian Allen, Operations Manager, or
Lee Anne Bowie, the President of the Board of Directors. Members of the Board of Directors do not have to be current
members of the Go Center, although they usually are. We have enough candidates to fill all our Board positions but we
are still accepting nominations.

We hope to see you on Sunday!

Regards,
Brian Allen
Operations Manager

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Insights into Dan-level Play

Hey Go Fans-
For Monday's class I want to show you a recent game I played as part of the American Yungusang Dojang league. We won't review the entire game, but rather, I want to step you through how Dan-level players think about certain specific positions and contrast that with kyu bumbling sequences. I will explain away some of the mysteries for players of all levels!

[Seattle Go Center] More vol: Thursdays; Sundays

Hello Go folks,

I have *even more* volunteer opportunities for you -- now with added aji!

Thursdays
Thank you, Michael Brown, for your months of service on Thursdays; and good luck in your new job!
We are in need of a volunteer to be Day Manager on Thursday afternoons. Currently we're open from 2 PM to 9 PM, and we need someone to take over the first half. This is a little flexible -- for example, if you reliably can start at 1 PM, or can't start until 3 PM, we can accommodate that.
Thursdays are usually not too demanding. Your responsibilities would be to open the Go Center, tidy up a little (about 5 - 10 minutes), greet any visitors and sign them up for a ten-visits card and the mailing list if they're new, facilitate any retail sales, and offer games / teach beginners as appropriate. For context, yesterday there were three visitors between 2 PM and 6 PM, all of whom were regulars. Which is not to say we never get newcomers on Thursdays -- we do; but usually, there's time for the Day Manager to study joseki or read "Treasure Chest Enigma".
Contact Mike -- programs@SeattleGo.org (or find me at the Go Center on a Tuesday) -- for more information, or to volunteer to perform this valuable service to the community.

Sundays
At the Salmon Bay Elementary School "Pi Day" event (thanks for the assist, Kyle!), a librarian from Shoreline Public Library invited us to teach the game of Go at their monthly "Games Day". Currently, four are scheduled, but the first one is on Mothers' Day, which in my experience has not proven to be a good day for Go activities.
So I'll be going on June 11, and I'd like to bring a volunteer who could also attend July 7 and August 4. (Note that those are monthly ratings tournament days.)
Teaching kids and families is probably our best way of finding new players -- ask Chris Kirschner sometime how he learned, it's a wild story. So for more information, or to volunteer to perform this valuable service to the community, please contact Mike -- programs@sEATTLEgO.org (or talk to me on a Tuesday at the Go Center).

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

email: programs@SeattleGo.org
web: www.SeattleGo.org
Go Center phone: 206-545-1424

PS -- We had some volunteers who offered to help with outdoor chores once the weather started getting nicer. I'll be in touch soon to set that up.

PPS -- How many beginners does it take to change a lightbulb?

(They can't, because they don't see the ladder.)
(I know I used that one already. I ran out of Go jokes a long time ago, so if you have some, send them my way!)

[Seattle Go Center] Outreach coming up -- seeking volunteers

Hello Go folks,

Spring is around the corner, and some of our major annual outreach events are coming up. Outreach is an important part of our activities -- it's how we inform people of the existence of our game, and get new players.

With as many members as the Go Center has, we should be able to share the load of teaching newcomers. Street fairs and cultural festivals are an especially fun place to do it. High school students -- if you need community service hours, this is a fun way to earn them; and a good way to demonstrate your commitment to Go, if you're interested in AGF scholarships (see http://agfgo.org/pages/scholarships.php for info). [Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Middle

Hey Go Fans-
For tomorrow night's class I want to analyze a group of middle-game positions. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the game to study, as reading and endgame skills can be practiced with problems/tsumego, joseki can be practiced with patterns, and the opening is theoretical. But, the middle-game is also perhaps the single-most important part of the game!

Instead of just analyzing some middle-game positions, I've found a short series of problems from a Dan-level problem book where the "answers" to the problems diverge from what AI's say is the best move. This should make for some extra-interesting discussions among players of different skill levels. Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Go Saturdays

Hello Seattle Go Players,

Saturdays are a good day for Go! The Go Center is open, there's a new meetup in Mukilteo, and a meetup in Bellevue!

The Go Center will be open today, 1:00 - 8:00 PM. Saturdays are often well attended, and a good day for finding a casual game. This is the second Saturday of the month, so it's time for Speed League -- three rounds of competitive Go, with breathlessly exciting time limits! (10 minutes, + 3 x 20 seconds byo-yomi.) Register 1:15 - 1:45, and the first round starts by 2:00. The third round is usually finished by 4:00 or 4:15.

There's a new Go meetup on Saturdays in Mukilteo, 2:00 - 4:00 PM! Billy and Mune are ready to teach beginners and challenge veteran players at:
Mukilteo Public Library, 4675 Harbour Pointe Blvd., Mukilteo, WA 98275
Google Maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/HTQJpSFeJuS2
Note that they don't have a lot of equipment yet, so if you bring a Go set with you, it would help.

There's a Go meetup in Bellevue, too. Saturdays in Bellevue, 1:00-5:00 PM, Go players meet at:
Kin On/ASCF Community Center Go Club, 15921 NE 8th St, C-206, Bellevue WA 98008
Google Maps link: https://goo.gl/maps/zYXxCrnaTvF2
First visit is free.

Have a Go(od) weekend,

[Seattle Go Center] Today and tomorrow, Yuto Tajiri

Hello Go folks,

This evening, Yuto Tajiri 5P will visit our weekly Wednesday Go outreach event at Uwajimaya, 6:00-7:30 PM. Meanwhile, at the Go Center, the Go Programming meetup will meet up with Eric and Drew, and work on programming computers to play Go, 6:00-7:00; followed by Go Basics with Drew, 7:00-8:30.

Tomorrow evening, Yuto Tajiri 5P will lecture at the Go Center, 6:00-8:00; free of charge (just remember to punch your 10-visits card). This is your last chance to see him this trip, because he's departing Friday morning.

Have I mentioned recently how fortunate I feel to live near a place where so much *interesting* Go activity is ongoing?

[Seattle Go Center] goban offer

Dear Members,

Our old friend bill camp, former manager of the Go Center, is continuing with his project of restoring, refinishing and selling old Japanese gobans (floor boards). He also has bowls, and slate and shell stones. Yes, he is still in Australia, but the shipping rates are not terrible. It costs $200 in Australian Dollars to ship a goban to the U.S. (That would be about $145 in U.S. dollars). bill reminds us that if you group shipments together with friends, it will be less expensive for each item.

Here is the latest news from bill:

SPECIAL NOTICE:
We just learned that we have to move in the next few months, and will have a one-time sale for some items on this and other pages. It will begin March 5 and end April 20. Each item will be separately marked with a sale price, if applicable. Additional items will be added during the sale.

Regards,
Brian
Operations Manager

[Seattle Go Center] Simuls with Mr. Tajiri

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Mr. Tajiri, 5-Dan pro from the Nihon Ki-in, will be at the Go Center playing simultaneous games today. The afternoon session begins at 2:00 (donation requested -- $10, or $5 for Youth / Go Center voting members). The evening session begins at 6:00 (please donate -- $15 / $10 for Youth / voting members). I hope you can join us for this amazing opportunity!

Also as usual, Tuesday we're open 1:00-10:00 PM for the "largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)"! Come enjoy casual games of Go (and probably Shogi) with a community of your peerless peers.

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Pro Guest Lesson!

Hey Go Fans-
During Monday's class, we will welcome Tajiri Yuto 5p to the DDK class for an extra-special guest lesson! Come hear what a really strong player has to teach you about the game, rather than my usual wandering babble! This should be a good lesson for most of you, but for those of you who have never met a pro player in real life before, I especially urge you to come and witness a whole another level of strength!

Nick Sibicky 4D
Double-Digit Kyu Class
Mondays 6:30-8:30 PM

[Seattle Go Center] Pro visit - Mr. Tajiri 5p, March 4 - March 7

Hello Seattle Go Community,

I'm pleased to announce that Mr. Yuto Tajiri, 5 dan professional Go player of the Nihon Ki-in, will be visiting Seattle next week! Here is his profile page:
https://www.nihonkiin.or.jp/player/htm/ki000415.html

Here is the schedule of events (subject to changes; but this is what I'm expecting):

Mon. March 4 -- DDK takeover! Mr. Tajiri will lead the Double Digit Kyu session ordinarily taught by Nick Sibicky. 6:30-8:30 PM. No charge for this (though Go Center admission policies apply -- remember to punch your 10-visit cards).

Tue. March 5 -- Simuls simuls simuls! Two sessions for your learning pleasure:
2:00-4:30 PM; $10 donation to the Go Center requested ($5 for Youth and Voting Members).
6:00-8:30 PM; $15 donation to the Go Center requested ($10 for Youth and Voting Members).
Six players maximum per session (actually, this is one of the things that might change -- I'm not certain how many Mr. Tajiri will play simultaneously). Sign up in advance. Sign-up sheets are posted on the side reception desk at the Go Center.

Wed. March 6 -- Uwajimaya! For several years, we've maintained an outreach event on Wednesday evenings at Uwajimaya (600 5th Ave. S., Seattle WA 98104). We'd like Mr. Tajiri to see it. I'm not yet sure what form it will take -- I'm hoping he'll stun everyone with blindfolded 9x9, but I don't yet know. 6:00-7:30 PM

Thu. March 7 -- Lecturer's Choice! Mr. Tajiri will lecture at the Go Center, 6:00-8:00 PM. No charge for this (though Go Center admission policies apply -- remember to punch your 10-visit cards).

Mr. Tajiri departs Friday; no weekend seminar this time around. Mr. Tajiri will also visit two Go programs at Seattle schools on this trip.

Seattle Go Center is incredibly fortunate to have professional players sharing their expertise with us. I hope you can join us for these special events.

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] Tournament Sunday

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, which means it's TOURNAMENT TIME!! Three rounds of AGA-rated competitive goodness. We usually have a decently large field, so handicaps are often relatively low. No fee to play (though Go Center membership policies apply -- https://www.seattlego.org/membership/ -- and you do need to be a current member of the AGA -- http://www.usgo.org/join-aga-today for info and an online form).
- Register 10:00 - 10:45 AM (please come early if you need to join or update your AGA membership).
- First round begins at 11:00 (if you're running a little late, phone 206-545-1424 and Bill will pair you in; you forfeit if you're not present and playing by 11:30). If you arrive by 12:30, you almost certainly can play in the second round.
- You don't have to play all rounds; just tell the Tournament Director your plans.
- More details: https://www.seattlego.org/events/
