[Seattle Go Center] Big Tournament on Sunday, Jan. 4 2015

Dear Go Players,

Here is a friendly reminder that the Jin Chen Memorial Tournament is coming up this Sunday, Jan. 4 2015.  We expect players from double digit kyu levels to at least 7 dan.  Last year we had 46 players. This is an AGA rated tournament, and it replaces our regular Monthly Ratings Tournament.  Registration starts at 10 am.

Here are the details:

Please join us for our biggest tournament of the year, with prizes totaling $1000.  There will be an open section and several handicapped sections, and special prizes for young players.  First place in the Open Section wins $300.  This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face.

The tournament is 3 rounds, Japanese rules.  $15 general entry; $10 for youth and voting members of the Go Center.  Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Potluck Party Tuesday plus our regular fun

Dear Members,

On Tuesday, December 30, we will be open our regular hours, from 1- 10 p.m. Starting at 6, we will be having a holiday party with potluck food and drink. We encourage you to bring something to share. We will have a banquet permit, so you can bring beer, wine, sake or cider if you want. But food is good too!

We will also have a short slide show, which will include images that we do not post on the internet. We will remind you that it is the end of the year, which is a great time to make a donation to the Go Center. Iwamoto Sensei's generous donation started the Seattle Go Center, but it is our responsibility to keep the Center going. You can make donations online now at http://www.seattlego.org/donate/ There is Paypal button at the bottom of that page.

There will be plenty of time to play Go as well. We hope to see you there!

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] New Years Simuls (MSF)

Dear Go Players,

This Thursday, January First, I will be playing simuls at the Seattle Go Center starting at 1:00 PM.  This year I will be playing for donations on behalf of Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders.)  MSF is in the front line in the fight against Ebola but their hard work doesn't just stop there.  MSF can be found throughout the world working to build much needed healthcare infrastructure and fighting epidemics. You can find out more about MSF at: www.msf.org

I will also be matching the first $10 dollars donated for each game played.  I will limit the number of games to 9 in each session and welcome all players, no matter their strength.  Also, those that record there game can email it to me and I will give a brief email review of the game.

A personal note about the Ebola outbreak:  Sally, my fiancĂ©, worked in Liberia at the Elwa hospital.  This is the same hospital that Dr. Kent Brantley, Nancy Writebol, and Dr. Rick Sacra were working at when they were infected with the virus.  In fact, she worked alongside Dr. Rick Sacra and he was one of her references when she applied for her current job at Peacehealth here in Bellingham.  You can find out more information about the missionary/medical work these three individuals do at: www.sim.org  For more information about the Ebola outbreak on their website I would direct you to: http://www.sim.org/ebola

While Nance Writebol and Dr. Brantley were on the front line fighting Ebola, Dr. Rick Sacra's story is a little more nuanced.  Dr. Sacra was back in the United States when Nance Writebol and Dr. Brantley were infected with Ebola.  In spite of this, Dr. Sacra chose to return to Liberia and help with obstetric patients at Elwa hospital where he also contracted the disease.  These three and their families are worthy of your praise.

I hope to see you on Thursday, but if this is not the case I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and yours a Happy New Year and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year!

Jon Boley

[Seattle Go Center] We welcome your donations! (Tax-deductible!)

Executive Summary:

You can donate through Paypal here:

http://www.seattlego.org/donate/

Dear Members,

Your donations of time and money are crucial for the Seattle Go Center as we teach and share the great game of Go.  Donations are actually bigger part of our budget than membership payments, and they allow us to keep our doors open to all with our “first ten visits free” policy.

The Seattle Go Center has had another good year.  Membership has continued to grow, and the number of new (non-paying) members this year was more than double the previous fiscal year.  We also have more than 100 paying members now (lifetime, yearly and 10-visit card holders). The Go Center organized our first Eastside program, a twice weekly meet-up at Crossroads Bellevue. We also have continued our ambitious schedule of classes and events at the Iwamoto Building in the University District of Seattle.  During the past year we did outreach at 5 public festivals, ran Go clubs in 5 schools, and shared the game of Go in a variety of other ways. Check out:

http://www.seattlego.org/outreach/

Our online instruction has expanded too.  Nick Sibicky now has 88 Double Digit Kyu Player lectures posted on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/user/nicksibicky

And Andrew Jackson has started posting his Single Digit Kyu Player lectures at:

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGAASXnrt4FtYfFZ608PqHA

We are grateful for all the volunteer hours that make this possible, but we also need money.  Please  include us in your year-end donations if you can.  Since we are a 501(c)(3) charity, your donations are tax deductible.  We are listed with the IRS under our formal name: Nihon Ki-in Go Institute of the West, but you can also make out your checks to the Seattle Go Center, our “dba” (doing business as trade name).  Or you can donate online at:

http://www.seattlego.org/donate/

We hope to see you at our Holiday Party, on Tuesday, Dec. 30.  The party starts at 6:00 pm, but we will start playing Go at 1:00!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night: Seattle Go Center, Tonight, 7pm

Absolute Beginner's are encouraged to come and spend time with either myself or other players to get more practice playing this great game. DDK, SDK, and Dan level players are always encouraged to come and learn the game of Go more deeply by attempting to explain what you know of the game to more novice players.

Zei Wei and I reviewed one of my recent games before a fast accelerating beginner came in for some fun 13x13 games against Zei Wei.

Bring in games to review, we'll go over some Go vocabulary for who ever is around, and talk about other beginner's topics.

Frank is on leave at the moment, so he will not be around for games during the day.

See you tonight.

Re: [ORE] Heralds needed for Arc Dream games

<<Serendipitously enough, as a Herald I was thinking of signing up to run Godlike, Kerberos and MAOCT, mainly because I'm more into RPGs than board games.>>

Wonderful!

<<My only concern is that, due to lack of interest in my group, I haven't run any Godlike in many years. I did back the Kickstarter for the new edition and am in the process of re-reading it to reacquaint myself with the mechanics and setting.>>

Please do! If it helps, there's an extensive new Godlike primer + starter adventure coming out very soon.

Hey gang,

Please help us spread the word to fellow gamers. Arc Dream is a charter member of the Envoy Program, which is built to facilitate putting games in front of new players everywhere. Please sign up as a Herald — as a GM, in other words — and help them show off Godlike, Wild Talents, Monsters and Other Childish Things, the Fate edition of The Kerberos Club, and (soon) Delta Green. Thank you!

[Seattle Go Center] Tomorrow - Bellevue Go Meetup

Hello everyone. Tomorrow we are having our regular Thursday meetup in Bellevue, from 6:00 to 8:30 at the Crossroads Mall.

Note: Next Thursday is Christmas day, and the Thursday after that is New Year's day, so we won't be able to have another Thursday meetup until January 7. So come on down and play some Go, for the last Thursday meetup in 2014!

And as I mentioned last week, a big thank you to the various Dan-level players who give teaching games and other playing advice to the kyu-level players attending the meetup.

[Seattle Go Center] Last DDK Class of 2014 Tomorrow! - MIDTERM EXAMS!

Hi Everyone!

Tomorrow night will be the last double-digit kyu class for 2014! My plan is to set up an assortment of go problems dealing with a wide-array of topics for us to discuss (namely shape, opening, direction of play, life and death, and end-game tesuji). I am titling this lesson "MIDTERM EXAMS" due to its comprehensive nature. I hope to see you there!

Also, I'm sure most of you are aware that I post these classes on a YouTube channel, but for those of you who aren't, check out: https://www.youtube.com/user/nicksibicky
I have posted 88 lessons to date with more constantly being added.

So we are cancelling the Bellevue Go meetup tonight. We hope to see you all next week instead, and stay safe.

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night Tonight 12/11/14 at 7pm

Absolute Beginner's are encouraged to come and spend time with either myself or other players to get more practice playing this great game. DDK, SDK, and Dan level players are always encouraged to come and learn the game of Go more deeply by attempting to explain what you know of the game to more novice players. The act of teaching and explaining something you also learn and study truly is its own practice. I have learned so much in doing so, and as always am humbled to be the current beginner's night host.

Elliot and I played an epic game last week so we didn't cover some beginner's go terminology which will be part of what Zei Wei and I will cover tonight. I've also brought some recent games to look at in case there is an interest.

The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games.

[Seattle Go Center] Bellevue Go Meetup Tomorrow

Hi everyone. We are having yet another Bellevue Go meetup tomorrow, from 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm at the Crossroads Mall.

I'd like to extend a big thank you to the various Dan-level players who have been coming to the meetup, for offering teaching games and short reviews. This culture of teaching and knowledge sharing is one of my favorite things about the Go community.

As always, we are meeting at the game tables near the giant chess board, in front of Uncle's Games. We hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class: Go Seigen Remembered

Last week, the Go world was saddened to learn of the passing of one of the greatest players ever with the death of Go Seign (https://www.usgo.org/news/2014/11/great-master-go-seigen-dead-at-100/).

For those who do not know, Go Seigen was one of the world's first two 9d pros and was instrumental in popularizing the 4-4 opening that is so common today. Go Seigen is one of my own personal favorite go players, and his games are filled with inventive, ahead-of-his-time moves. I will be giving a lecture on one of his greatest games tomorrow night. Please don't miss it!

[Seattle Go Center] 10 AM Start for Ratings Tourn this Sun Dec 7

Dear Go Players,

The Monthly Ratings Tournament will be this Sunday, Dec 7, with registration from 10 – 10:45 AM, and the first round at 11 AM.  If you can’t come in the morning, don’t worry – you can register for the 2nd round before 12:30 PM.  We are not sure when the 2nd round will start, but being there by 12:30 should give the TD, Dan Top, enough time to get you in the pairings.

On Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, we will have the Jin Chen Tournament, our biggest tournament of the year.  The prize purse is $1000.  That tournament will also have registration from 10 – 10:45 AM.

More info on both events at:

http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Best,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Thursday Beginner's Night 7pm at Go Center

Tomorrow, we bring back beginner's night to the Go Center.

That said, I will have some go lingo/terminology to share with beginners that you might hear others talking about as I found part of being able to learn Go is also speaking and hearing Go being explained. Yet another Go art!

The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games.

See you tomorrow night!

Carlos

[ORE] Arc Dream sale, ratings, and newsletter

We have some big updates this week.

First, the Cyber Monday sale. It lasts til the end of the week. We have to mulch a LOT of books thanks to overprinting by our publishing partners and high warehousing costs, and we'd rather put them in gamers' hands.

Second, RPGGeek ratings. Every item on our catalog page has a link to its RPGGeek.com entry. We encourage (beg, implore, demand, cajole) you to log in there and rate our work. Especially if you like it.

Third, we've established a newsletter that's just for one-way announcements from Arc Dream. Go to any page of arcdream.com to sign up.

And a quick update from the salt mines: I've been getting the final interior art for No Soul Left Behind, the Better Angels campaign that we Kickstarted recently, and it looks GREAT. I'll put a proper preview together soon. It's going to our page designer shortly.

It looks like our next One Roll Engine trick will be Ninth Legion, Paul Mitchener's long-gestating Reign campaign book that takes a Roman legion into Faerie and leaves them there for two hundred years. Watch for it at Kickstarter very soon.

Outside of the ORE:
  • Puppetland is back! It goes to the artists any day now.
  • Delta Green: Extraordinary Renditions is slowly coming together.
  • We're about to review Beta playtest reports for Delta Green: The RPG.
  • We'll playtest scenarios for The Unspeakable Oath 25 next week.
Thanks, all.

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament - New Start Time! - 10 AM

Dear Members,

The Monthly Ratings Tournaments will now start with registration from 10 – 10:45 AM, and with the first round at 11 AM.  The next Ratings Tournament will be this Sunday, Dec. 7, at the Seattle Go Center.

If you can’t come for the morning round, you can almost certainly play in the second round if you register at the Go Center by 12:30 pm.  The third round should be done by 5:00 p.m.

The Seattle Go Center is making these changes in response to the on-line survey we did several weeks ago.  We are also planning on doing some Saturday Tournaments in the next year.

Cheers,

Brian
