[Seattle Go Center] No Thursday meetup in Bellevue

Hi folks. Due to Thanksgiving day, there will be no Thursday meetup in Bellevue this week.

I noticed that Christmas Day is a Thursday also, so we won't be able to have a meetup that week either. But the Thursday meetups will continue the other weeks in December, with our next Bellevue Meetup happening on December 4th.

Have a good Holiday weekend!

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night: Tonight November 20, 2014 7pm

Dear Members,

Beginners of all sorts are invited to our weekly Beginner's Night at the Seattle Go Center. Invite friends, family, partners, whomever you've been trying to trick into playing some Go with you.

Zhi Wei Chen and I host a loosely structured night. We try to include some individualized teaching for absolute beginner's, encourage going through complete games with other beginner's, and everything in between.

We will always offer tailored introduction to the rules for absolute beginners.

The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games.

ONGOING INVITATION TO EXPERIENCED PLAYERS INTERESTED IN COMING AND ASSISTING WITH BEGINNERS. If you come to double-digit Kyu night and just want to learn more by attempting to teach some beginner's, come!

Aside from being slightly intimidated by stronger players, beginner's do appreciate teaching games with more experienced players. Thank you for your continued attendance and hope to see you more of you there tonight.

Also, WE WILL NOT BE DOING BEGINNER'S NIGHT NEXT THURSDAY BECAUSE OF THANKSGIVING.

See you tonight,

Carlos Encalada

As usual, if you have homework to turn in, i will grade it :)

[Seattle Go Center] Change to Pro Simul Schedule

Dear Go Players,

Today’s afternoon simultaneous games with Kuma, a Nihon Ki-in 6 dan, have been postponed to 3:30 pm (rather than 2).  This is for Tuesday, November 18.

The evening event is a game between Lisa Go, our visiting 8 dan amateur, and Kuma, followed by game analysis.  The evening simultaneous games have been cancelled.

My apologies for the last minute notice.

[Seattle Go Center] Monday DDK Class: Games and then Review

Hi Go Fans!

Tomorrow's Double-Digit Kyu class will be flipped around a little bit; instead of my lecturing for an hour first and then you all having some time to play some games, we are going to start class with you all playing some games. Then at various points we will pause and review/discuss your games in progress!

It should be fun, and give you each some directed ideas to improve your own style when playing. Please try to show up on time so that we can get everyone a partner!

Also, on the following Monday (11/24) there will be no lecture/lesson due to the SGC board meeting. However, the Go Center will be open, and I still encourage you to hang out and play some games that evening!

[Seattle Go Center] Team Tournament Results

Dear Members,

The Strong Players Team Tournament last Sunday, Nov. 9, was tied after two rounds, 5 to 5.  I think this is a victory for our handicapping system – the tournament totally balanced.  Simon (Ximeng) Yu was playing as a 9 dan, and Lisa Go as a 8 dan. To figure out who would get the prizes (little gift cards), a pair go game was played afterward.  Team Lisa won the pair go game.

In the fun tournament, Simon (Ximeng) Yu won his game with Lisa Go, after giving her black, and lost to Dong Ma (6.1 dan), after giving him 3 stones.  Lisa won her game against Dong Baek Kim (6.7 dan), after giving him black.

Thanks to Sonny Cho and Bill Chiles for organizing this event!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Pro Workshop with Kuma this weekend Nov 15-16

Dear Members,

Now is the time to sign up for our Nihon Ki-in Pro Weekend Workshop with Kuma 6P, starting this Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9:00 AM. Pro workshops are a great way to learn -- pros can really tell you what is going to work, what is not going to work, and what depends on that scattering of stones way over on the other side of the board.

Kuma will be teaching this workshop in Japanese, with Oren Laskin translating. Kuma also speaks Chinese, and some English. His Chinese name is Shiung Feng. He is currently doing pro commentary on the Mejin Tournament in Japan.

There is more information on our webpage, and you may also register on-line. You may also register in person at the Go Center by paying with cash or check. The workshop fees go up on Thursday, Nov. 13, so register now!

Re: [ORE] Introducing

For a new system, unrelated to anything the players have played before, I generally run a one-shot with pregenerated characters.  It not only gives the players a chance to figure out the system and possibilities before they make characters -- it also gives me the chance do character generation first, and get a feel for how to walk the players through it.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Tomorrow: Team Game!

Hi Everyone-

Tomorrow night's class will be very interactive, as our entire class will be playing a single game of go at the teaching board. Similar to Guo Juan's "Survivor Go," each class member will be evaluated on the quality of their moves (based on their rank) in our communal game and will score (or lose) points for their respective teams. If you haven't participated in this type of game with me before, you won't want to miss it as it is a really great learning opportunity and lots of fun! I hope to see you there!

Nick Sibicky 4D
Double-Digit Kyu Class
Mondays 6:30-8:30 PM at the SGC
