[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tonight - Essential life & death part 2! (also, pizza!)

Hi all,

Most importantly - I've been informed that there is a large quantity of leftover pizza from last night. Free food!

During tonight's SDK class (at 7pm), we'll continue our study of essential life & death shapes. These are common corner & side patterns that come pretty often in real games. The plan is to study 4 or 8 new shapes every week (until the end of the year) while constantly reviewing the ones we've already studied in order to commit these to memory.

We'll certainly have plenty time to review your recent games, so if you have a recent game record you'd like to go over, send me an email (peternelson815@gmail.com) with the SGF attached or simply bring it to class. Hope to see you tonight at 7pm!

Peter

P.S. You can find SGFs from previous classes here (now slightly better organized):

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday, Dec. 4

Dear Members,

Our Monthly Ratings Tournament will be this Sunday, Dec. 4, with registration from 10 – 10:45 am.  Usually we finish by 5 pm, but you do not have to play all three rounds; just tell the TD (Bill Chiles) what your plans are.  This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face.

Last month we had 16 players, ranging in strength from 18 kyu to 2 dan.  For more information, please go to our calendar, and click on the listing:

http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Endgame and Counting Workshop

Hi Everyone-
Tomorrow's DDK class will focus on the endgame; we will focus on practicing evaluating move values as well as finding common tesujis. Counting the score (of 9x9 positions) will also be practiced. These are skills that most Go players gloss over but can be really valuable to improving your game. Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Black and White Friday - We Are Open 1-5 pm

Dear Go Players,

We will be open this Friday, Today, Nov. 25, from 1-5 pm, and perhaps later, if a volunteer with a building key agrees to watch to the Go Center.  I hope to play some “self pair” rated games this afternoon.  I am also bringing in a pumpkin pie.

The procedure for our self pair games is similar to what you can do at a Go Congress: find a rated player within handicapping range, agree to a game, and use a clock. (We can show you where they are stored.) Then you should write down the results on the forms on the 2nd desk near the door, and put them in the jar with the red top.   The TD for self-paired games is Dennis Wheeler, our Saturday Manager.  He will submit the results to the AGA.

Both players for self pair games must be current members of the AGA, and that membership must be verifiable at https://www.usgo.org/search-ratings   (Note that this can take a while after you renew or join.)

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Fundraising complete for Go board refinishing project!

Dear Members,

I am pleased to report that we have completed the fundraising for the Go board refinishing and relining project ($3420).  All our older table boards will be redone. We have three boards done, and 6 more are in Japan now being refinished.  We will continue sending batches until all 19 boards are done.

Thank you very much!  Iwamoto Sensei’s gift of our building made the Seattle Go Center possible, but your support as members keeps it growing.

Sincerely,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Most Go Seigen!

Hey Go Fans-
I've sort of declared this year's unofficial theme to be Go Seigen, as in doing so I think we need to revisit another Go Seigen game. So far this year, we've already seen him play some games involving huge dragon kills, mirror go, and crazy life and death. Come to our class tomorrow and see what else can happen when Go Seigen is holding the stones! I hope to see you there.

Re: [ORE] [Wild Talents]Request for help with Character Creation, understanding Hyperstats, Hyperskills, and Power/Miracles

It is going to be easier to think about and deal with if you have an idea about what you want. Think about what you would like the game to be...then build out from that. The power creation is fun. Don't let the open ended nature of it overwhelm you.
If you want a brainy guy, combat guy, sneaky guy, flyer guy...then take one at a time and figure how they would operate.

But I'm still not sure how to do Hyperstats or Hyperskills or Powers.

I want to know if anyone would be willing to walk through creating a few different characters and answering my questions.
Things like, when do Hyperstats and Hyperskills come into play if their Power isn't augmenting them?
Pre-made Miracles exist but how do you calculate there dice pool?
What do some of the Power Capacities mean?

I'd like to cover this verbally if possible so if you can do VoIP like Google Hangouts, Skype, Teamspeak, Discord,  let me know.
I want help any way I can get it so any reply is welcome.

Thank you.

I'm not big on Voice, but if you wanna Skype or IRC, I can help. Probably lots of threads here that can helo too. It's really a deceptive system ; easier than it seems once you shift some expectations.

Thank you.

[ORE] [Wild Talents]Request for help with Character Creation, understanding Hyperstats, Hyperskills, and Power/Miracles

Hello Group,

I got a play a one shot using ORE and Wild Talents a few months ago and I fell in love.
Recently I talked my RP group into playing a superhero game and I knew I wanted to use Wild Talents.
One purchase from Drive Thru RPG later and I thought I'd be on my way, except I'm not.
The one shot that got me interested in the system provided pregen characters but now that I'm
trying to learn the character creation, I've found at first glance the process is anything but clear.

After several days of working at it I'm finally comfortable with Stats, Skills, and Archetypes.
But I'm still not sure how to do Hyperstats or Hyperskills or Powers.

I want to know if anyone would be willing to walk through creating a few different characters and answering my questions.

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Class Tonight: Probing Moves!

Hi all,

During tonight's SDK class (at 7pm), we'll look at probing moves, specifically those against a 3-4 + 5-3 corner enclosure. We often think that when one player has enclosed a corner with a 3-4 and 5-3 (knight's move) shape, it's their corner; this is true, but we can still get a lot of benefits/aji from it.

Rather than me talking for an hour straight or longer, tonight we'll try something different: I'll give a briefer overview of the general principles and patterns, and then we'll split up into pairs and try it out right away. Then we'll regroup and go over the variations that you came up with so you can receive some immediate feedback.

We might still have time at the end to review your recent games, so if you have a recent game record you'd like to go over, send me an email (peternelson815@gmail.com) with the SGF attached or simply bring it to class. Hope to see you tonight at 7pm!

Peter

P.S. You can find SGFs from previous classes (and future classes, including tonight's) here:

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Oldest Game

Hey Go Fans-
During tonight's Double-digit kyu class, I want to show you the oldest go game record that is known (from about 200 C.E.). It is a fascinating game, with many moves that you will recognize and many moves that you won't! The record itself is incomplete, at only 43 moves. But within those moves lies a joseki that we still use in games today! Don't miss out on experiencing this piece of Go history!

[Seattle Go Center] Set Clock Back for Ratings Tournament this Sunday, Nov. 6

Dear Members,

Our Monthly Ratings Tournament is this Sunday, Nov. 6, starting at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.   Daylight Saving Time ends this weekend, so you can get an extra hour of sleep before the tournament.

The tournament is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.  At our last regular ratings tournament in September, we had players from 20 kyu to 1 dan playing.  Youth players are welcome if they have the patience for long games (45 minutes to a side).

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late.  If you call in, your clock starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit.  If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am.  Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner.  If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director (Daniel Top) what your plans are.

Cheers,

Brian

[ORE] STEW Metric Impacts

I am prepping a Progenitor-inspired game - that is, not in the Progenitor universe, but using the mechanics from that book to do my own alternate timeline where the PCs get super-powers and then kick history merrily off track, starting in the late 90s. I have a few questions on the STEW metrics system.

First, I'm a bit confused by the timeframe described. Am I only supposed to change the metric values and then roll for events once per year, or should I be doing it whenever I've basically used up the previously rolled events? Ie, if I roll for events under Authoritarianism and come up with one, and it prompts a few adventures but I basically wrap that plotline up, does it break anything to roll again immediately for more ideas? I got the impression in a few places that the recommendation was one roll per year. Or is it that the metrics should only change on a yearly basis?

Second, would you recommend starting with the metrics at 0, the way Progenitor does in 1968? My thought was to set everything to 0, and then use the metrics to track deviation from real history, rather than try to port in the values from, say 1998 in the timeline, but I'm open to recommendations otherwise.

Finally, and the big one - has anyone done any examples, lists, etc. of what types of events might affect the metrics in various ways? I mean, some of them are fairly straightforward - you just released plans for super-efficient solar panels that can be made for under $20 using common household supplies, congratulations! Technology +1, Economy -1. Some are less clear, though - what types of PC actions are likely to raise Suspicion? If the players decide to go all 'The Authority' and start offing dictators, would you say that is a plus or a minus to Warfare? That kind of thing - Any guidelines or tips here would be very appreciated!

[Seattle Go Center] Choose the worst 6 Go boards

Dear Members,

I am pleased to announce that we have raised more than enough funds to send 6 more Go boards to Japan for refinishing and relining.  So today, Tuesday Nov. 1, we will choose the worst 6 boards to send off.   If you have donated to our campaign, feel free to nominate a board.  We still need about $1600 to renew all the boards, so more donations are certainly welcome.  If you donate $180, you may sign the finished board on the back in the center.  If you donate $50 or more, you may sign a finished board in the corner.

Donations can be made in person at the Go Center by check or cash, or on-line using PayPal with your credit card or cash card:

http://www.seattlego.org/board-relining/

Cheers,

Brian

Are there any premade adventures available for Reign or Wild Talents? I'm thinking running a game but I'd like something to base myself off of as this would be my first time GMing. If not are there some other premade adventures out there that could serve as a good template for translating into ORE?
