[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Learn How to Taunt a 6D!

Hey Go Fans,

One of my YouTube subscribers sent me a recent game record of a game he saw online between two strong amateurs. If you, like me, believe that Go is analogue to a conversation between two people, then in this game it is pretty clear that one of the players is taunting his opponent. You will want to see what happened next!

[Seattle Go Center] Summer Camps for kids and adults

Dear Members,

Three summer camps are being offered this year for go players. Two are for adults, in Japan, and one is for children
and teens in California. Our members have been to all three of these gatherings, and we recommend them highly.

The Kansai Kiin Summer Camp for Adults is in Osaka, Japan, and runs from June 25 - July 13, 2017
http://www.osaka-go-camp.22web.org/camp.html

The AGF (American Go Foundation) summer camp for youth is in Southern California, and runs from July 30 -
Aug. 5. Of the three, it is the only camp of that has horseback riding. http://www.usgo.org/news/2017/03/aga-go-
camp-set-for-week-before-congress-outside-san-diego/

The Nihon Ki-in camp is in Tokyo, but it visits Osaka for the Meijin Tournament. It runs from Aug. 25 to Sept. 6. We
have printed information on this camp at the Go Center./

[Seattle Go Center] Open at Go Center and Seattle Center

Hi All-

We will be at two places this Saturday, April 22.   We will be open our regular hours at the Seattle Go Center (1-7), with Dennis as manager.   And we will also be at the Cherry Blossom Festival, at Seattle Center, in the Armory, from 10-6.  We are in the Loft (level 3, one floor up from the food court).

Please note: our big tournament, the Spring Tournament, is May 7 at the Go Center.  We will not be having a tournament at the Cherry Blossom Festival, although there will be lots of informal games.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Cherry Blossom Festival this Weekend April 21-23

Dear Go Teachers,

We will be teaching and sharing the game of Go at the Cherry Blossom Festival at Seattle Center on Friday, April 21, Saturday, and Sunday.  We are in our regular place in the Loft of the Armory (one floor up from the food court).  For you old-timers, the Armory has also been called The Center House, The Food Circus, and The Armory (before the World’s Fair).  The Cherry Blossom Festival extends to several other buildings as well.  If you are new to Seattle, please note that we are down at the Seattle Center (under the Space Needle), not at our building, which is the Seattle Go Center.  The Go Center will be open regular hours on Saturday, as well.

The Festival is free, with many events and performances, but parking is expensive.  So if you can walk, bike or bus, you will save some money.  We will reimburse car pools with three volunteers, and drivers who are bringing handicapped people.

We have a core of volunteers scheduled already, but I expect we can use more teachers midday on Saturday and Sunday.  This will also allow teachers to take some time off, and check out the rest of the festival.

We will be open 10 – 6 on Friday, 10 – 6 on Saturday, and 10 – 5 on Sunday.  Here is the festival schedule:

http://www.cherryblossomfest.org/current-schedule.html

We hope to see you there!

Regards,

Brian

[ORE] Do you have to take an action for Trauma checks?

Do Trauma checks happen out of turn and you just roll on the spot? Or if you witness something horrific, do you next turn have to make your action be the Trauma check (or do a multiple action to make the check and also something else)?

[Seattle Go Center] Sakura Con Outreach this weekend, April 14-17

Dear Go Volunteers,

The biggest outreach event of the year is coming up this weekend: the Sakura Con anime and manga festival, April 14-17.   We give lessons and play lots of teaching games, usually 9x9 or 13x13, but some 19x19.  Remember that you do not need a ticket or pass to reach us.  We are outside the gates of the restricted area.  We are in the same room as last year,  Room 305 of the Washington State Convention and Trade Center.   Just go up the escalator, and take a left on the third floor.

Our hours will be:

April 14, Friday: 10 am to 10 pm or later

April 15, Saturday: 10 am to 10 pm or later

April 16, Sunday:  10 am to 4 pm

There will be a free 13x13 tournament on Sunday, April 17, from 11 – 1 pm.

We can cover parking costs if volunteers are car-pooling with 3 or more people, or bringing a handicapped person by car.  There is a way to park on the same level as our room.  Go in the Pike Street parking entrance that is on the eastern end of the building, above I-5.  I can reimburse car pools by check. Please contact me if you are interested in this.

Regards,

Brian

Of course, we welcome volunteers as well.

The eight classes are:

[Seattle Go Center] More visitors to Go Center

Dear Players,

Now that the days are longer, and the weather a little better, we are getting more visitors to the Go Center.  The special visit of Nihon Ki-in Pro Bian Wenkai brought out 49 players last Tuesday, but the previous Tuesday was pretty good too.  The Ratings tournament on Sunday had 20 players, from 18 kyu to 5 dan.  There were 6 dan level players at that tournament.  Today, Tuesday, April 4, we will be open from 1 – 10 pm.  We may start slowly, but I’m sure you can find a game after 3 pm.

If you can’t make it to the Go Center, perhaps the South Sound Go Club is closer.  They meet at the Wheelock Branch of the Tacoma Library on Tuesdays, from 5 – 7:30 pm.  More information about this meet-up, and many others, is on this page:

http://www.seattlego.org/clubs-and-meet-ups/

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Monkey Jump

Hey Go Fans-

We had a pretty special time with Bian Wenkai last Monday. We had a big crowd and a lot of fun! All of you who attended truly proved that the collective class is really just Alpha Go in disguise! I hope to have the video up on YouTube sometime this week, so in case you missed it, you will definitely want to check it out.

Anyway, this Monday is going to be a "back to basics" kind of workshop with a review of the Monkey Jump. Specifically, we going to practice how to deal with your opponent's monkey jumps as well as evaluating the points gained/lost by monkey jumps. This is a must-attend lecture for every DDK player! I hope to see you there.
