[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Go Center to Re-Open March 1st

Dear members,

The Seattle Go Center will be re-opening for in-person activities on Tuesday March 1st, 2022.

Upon re-opening the SGC will limit the consumption of foods and drinks to the outdoor patio until COVID-19 rates have declined further, and we will require visitors to wear N95 (preferred) or KN95 masks. With the windows open it may be chilly, so warm clothing is recommended.

We will still require visitors to be fully vaccinated and strongly encourage they be boosted as well.

As a reminder, up to three free face masks are available for every person in the United States, which can be picked up at participating pharmacies and health centers.

Here are CDC guidelines on how to use you N95 mask as well as their decontamination and reuse.

The SGC website now has a COVID-19 FAQ.

The SGC will continue to host its regular online meeting Tuesdays on Zoom.

Join Zoom Meeting(s): https://zoom.us/j/99377436701.

Please refer to the SGC events calendar for future notices.

[Seattle Go Center] Remembering Executive Order 9066 & the Japanese Internment Camps 80 Years Later

You can read this post on our website by clicking here.

This February the 19th marks 80 years since President Roosevelt’s signing of Executive Order 9066.

The Executive Order effected the forceable movement of nearly 120,000 Japanese and Japanese Americans from exclusion zones along the US’s western borders into relocation centers. Some two-thirds of those incarcerated were American citizens.

Toyojiro Yamada of Seattle was one of those held at the nearby Minidoka War Relocation Center in Idaho. Mr. Yamada’s grandson, Lawrence Matsuda donated to the Seattle Go Center Shogi and Go equipment that had belonged to his grandfather. These include a Shogi board that had been made in the camp and a set of Go stones that are believed to have been used there (pictured).

Privacy was scarce throughout the camp, and housing units at Minidoka were very poorly insulated, containing only a single lightbulb and coal burning stove. Incarcerees from the Pacific Northwest would have been unused to the high-altitude desert environment, experiencing temperatures below freezing in winter as well as summer days above 100°F.

Though an unfortunate history, the Seattle Go Center is honored to be trusted with a piece of it in remembrance.

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Closure and New Requirements Upon Reopening

Dear members,

As the Seattle area is still recovering from the recent spike in COVID-19 cases, the Seattle Go Center will be extending its closure to in-person games through to the end February. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation weekly.

Though Washington’s case rates are declining slightly slower than the rest of the country, we are optimistic they will soon reach an acceptable level for a safe resumption of in-person activities.

We would like to like to take this opportunity to inform you that upon re-opening the SGC will restrict food and drink privileges until COVID-19 rates have declined further, and we will require visitors to wear N95 (preferred) or KN95 masks.

The SGC will continue to host its regular Tuesday night meeting on Zoom. We will also host on Zoom Saturdays from 3pm to 6pm for the duration of the closure.

Join Zoom Meeting(s): https://zoom.us/j/99377436701.

Please refer to the SGC events calendar for future notices.

We apologize for the inconvenience,

[Seattle Go Center] New email address for Brian

Dear Members,

My gradual retirement as Operations Manager of the Seattle Go Center is proceeding nicely.  I still have a few projects to finish up, but Derek McGuire (DRM) has taken on all the regular duties of the Operations Manager, and all the new projects, with enthusiasm and skill.  And Kyle Burg continues as our friendly Program Manager, adjusting our schedule, on-line gatherings, and outreach as COVID allows.  At this point, all email sent to "operations" or "manager" goes to Derek, and all mail sent to "programs" goes to Kyle.  I am now using a different email: "brian" at our domain name.

This is not a farewell, because I expect to be a regular participant at Tuesday Go.  These days we are meeting on-line, using Zoom and Go servers such as OGS.  (Starting Tuesdays 6:30 pm at Zoom:  https://zoom.us/j/99377436701)  If the COVID reports continue to improve, we will go back to in-person play.  I'll let the Board and the managers decide when that will be; that's no longer my responsibility 😊

Cheers,

Brian Allen
