[Seattle Go Center] Save the Date - Sat Dec 12 for Pair Go!

Dear Members,

Our third annual gala Pair Go Tournament will be on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2015, starting at 6:00 p.m.  International Pair Go Rules will apply – each pair has one female and one male player.  So save the date, and find a date!

http://www.pairgo.or.jp/setumei/rule.htm

By the way, if you read the rules closely, you will note that no moxibustion is allowed during the games.  Non casual clothing is highly encouraged, but since this is not an official Pair Go tournament, it is not required.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Forget your troubles, come on get happy!

"The cradle," Vladimir Nabokov wrote in his achingly exquisite memoir, 'Speak, Memory', "rocks above an abyss, and common sense tells us that our existence is but a brief crack of light between two eternities of darkness. Although the two are identical twins, man, as a rule, views the prenatal abyss with more calm than the one he is heading for (at some forty-five hundred heartbeats an hour)."

It is a shame that so much of this brief crack of time between two eternities is taken up by mowing the lawn, taking out garbage, paying bills, worrying about global warming, our finances, our kids, our jobs, our health.

Is there nothing more? Is there no escape from the painful crudity and hopeless dreariness of everyday life? Yes! Art and Science and Go.

As Albert Einstein said:
"One of the strongest motives that lead men (and now women) to art and science (and also I believe to Go)  is the desire to escape from everyday life with its painful crudity and hopeless dreariness, from the fetters of one's ever-shifting desires.  A finely tempered nature longs to escape from the concerns of the merely personal into the world of objective perception and thought."

Do YOU have a finely tempered nature? Do YOU long to escape from the concerns of the merely personal into the world of der Reinen Vernunft - the realm of pure reason?
Then come into the Seattle Go Center tonight from 6:30 -9pm and learn to play Go.

You will discover in the game of Go the non utilitarian delights that Nabokov sought in art. To paraphrase the great chess master Tarrasch's quote on chess:
"Go, like love, like music has the power to make people happy."
Come on into the Go center tonight and get happy!

Hope to see someone, anyone , there tonight.

We're also open from 2pm  - 9 pm for casual play.

[Seattle Go Center] Bellevue Go every Thursday!

Hi folks. The Bellevue Go meetup is still alive and well, and we meet every Thursday evening from 6:00-8:30.

We are proud to report that we have met and played Go every single Thursday since February 2014, with just one exception last December when there was a major storm. We've got a nice pool of regular players who come by, and we've recently added a regular 3 dan player who is happy to give teaching games or play simultaneous games.

Come join us tonight at the Crossroads Mall!

Cheers,
Thane

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sun. Nov. 1 - Standard Time!

Dear Go Players,

Our regular Monthly Ratings Tournament will be this Sunday, November 1, with registration from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Standard Time.  (Note that the time change from Daylight Savings happens early that morning – you get an extra hour to sleep!)  Daniel Top will be the Tournament Director.

THE DETAILS -

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call us at 206 545-1424 if you will run late.  If you call in, your clock starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit.  If you come before 12:30 and register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am.  Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner.  If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Tuesday with Bread

Dear Members,

Chris K. is baking bread for this Tuesday at the Go Center, Oct. 27.   I would like to remind you that the Go Center is warm, dry and well lit.  Last Tuesday  was smaller than usual, but we still had 30 players visit us. So don’t let a dark damp evening discourage you from coming. It’ll be worth the trip.  We are open from 1 – 10  p.m. on Tuesdays.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Return of Nick Sibicky

Hey Everyone!

I'm happy to report that I have returned from my Europe trip safely and am very excited to teach the Monday night class again! I got to play a lot of Go in Europe (I met up with Go clubs in 6 different cities, plus a few other games outside official club meetings) and met a lot of really strong players.

During Monday's class I want to show you a recent game by Takemiya Masaki from this year's Honinbo tournament (which is coincidentally Takemiya's first title). Takemiya won his first major title in 1976; and continued to win them over dozens of years. His style has been called "Cosmic Go" and is one of the most distinctive among all professionals. Even though he moved away from "Cosmic Go" a bit during his career, several of his recent games he has returned to it with a vengeance. Takemiya also frequents the US Go Congress every couple of years, and is a big friend to the US Go Community.

I hope to see you all there!

[Seattle Go Center] No Saturday Crossroads Meet-up

Dear Eastside Go Players,

The Saturday Crossroads Bellevue group will not be meeting today, Oct. 24, or in the near future, due to changes in our volunteer's schedules. The Thursday Crossroads group is still meeting from 6 - 8:30 p.m. It attracts both dan players and kyu players. We recommend it highly.

[Seattle Go Center] Re: Go Problems For Beginners

Someone recommended  goproblems.com, but I wouldn't recommend those for the purpose
I have in mind which is to lead beginners from very simple problems to more difficult problems in
very small steps.

The reason I like Cho Chikun's Encyclopedia of Life and Death - Elementary is that within a the 25 kyu
set of problems there is a very finely graduated difficulty sequence .
The first problem is very simple: 3 in a row. The next problem is just one notch more difficult
than 3 in a row and the next slightly more difficult than that and so on.

The problems on goproblems.com, like most problem collections tend to be random.
Within a given kyu level set of problems, the problems are just random and not sequentially ordered by
increasing difficulty.

[Seattle Go Center] Learn To Play Go Now While There's Still TIme!

Astronomers have recently discovered that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Soon the entropy of the universe will have reached a maximum and there will be no usable energy left for life or anything else for that matter. The  stars will have died out, leaving the universe a cold, loveless, eternally black void.

But here at the Seattle Go Center you can still find warmth and love and light on Thursdays nights from 6:30pm -9pm with a highly experienced, sensitive, caring Go teacher dedicated to helping you get the maximum pleasure possible from your Go learning experience.

Go center is also open from 2-9pm for casual play.

[Seattle Go Center] SDK class Wednesday, 7pm-9pm: Running Groups

Hey everyone!

This weekend, the Seattle teams in the city league played some games that have some excellent lessons in them.  We'll look at two examples of running battles vs. surrounding, and why we want to "go running with a friend" -- or two!

Hope you'll join me! :)

Also, the problems due this week are the "week 7" problems.
I'll have a few copies of week 8 to handout in class, or you can pick them up from the red folder tonight!

See you soon!

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] (Courtyard of Hell spoilers) When NPCs don't follow the rules

I'll answer inline.

On Mon, Oct 12, 2015 at 6:25 PM, John Doe <erikstutzman@hotmail.com> wrote:
The book refers to combat rounds as generally lasting a few seconds-are they meant to be minutes in this case?

No, meant to simulate a few seconds. The question is what does "a few seconds" mean when you string combat rounds together. In the combat section, "There is no given measurement for how long a combat round lasts: It's an abstraction. It's 'however long it takes the slowest person in the fight to try one thing.'"

A combat round could be 2 seconds, it could be 8 seconds. When you string them together, they seem longer than 2 to 3 second, particularly since that all important "time you take thinking and hesitating" is often nonexistent in RPGs (between the player arguing "my character would know what to do immediately, even though it took me 10 minutes to decide what to do" and players deciding what to do next round while the other members of their party are finishing this round's action, etc). If you play through 10 combat rounds in a row — which could easily take up an hour of game play — and review the action afterward you will see that you typically accomplished way more than 20 seconds worth of stuff.

When stringing together combat rounds (such as when trying to figure out elapsed time after the fact, or coordinating separate groups) I find an easy conversion is 10 seconds per combat round seems to work fine. That's not written down anywhere, though. I'd like to hear what others think.

With that in mind, Der Magier could hold a time fugue for a couple of minutes: 2 rounds minimum on his roll, 10 Will expenditure to boost it. He'd be really low on Will, though. Of course, if he killed a couple of PCs he'd get a Will boost in return...

Garden variety force field generator? Are those that common among PC Talents?

I seem to remember a broad category breakdown in some of he background material Dennis wrote as to the percentage of Talents who were offensive, defensive, etc. That's kind of irrelevant to what players choose for their own characters, though.

In my personal experience, players seem to take two paths to building Talents: they either pick a simple, iconic Talent ("I want to fly," "I want a brick," "my guy teleports," "can I have a shield?") or they have a very specific, often unique Talent in mind ("he's a garage mechanic who suddenly can figure out what anything in the world looks like, so he's a Hyperbrain when it comes to deciding what machine we need, and then he can just whip it up with whatever tools and scraps he has lying around; did I mention that he has Tourette's and when he's building his devices he physically glows?"). I suspect a lot depends on their exposure to comics versus movie superheroes.

My wife didn't grow up with superheroes, so hers tend to be iconic Talents based on movies or broad concepts. I have a couple of friends who mostly come at superheroes from movies. I have a couple of others who know comics better, and one who is just plain imaginative and enjoys tearing apart the Talent build system.

How common is a Sue Storm/Violet Parr style force field creator? Not sure, though in playing at cons that kind of character was one of the first to get taken, largely I suspect because it's an easy character concept to understand how to use. It's also a good choice for players who prefer to react rather than act.

As for the drawings, I have to ask again about blowing up NPCs. If he leaves an explosive in an area where non-Talents set it off wouldn't he have a net Will gain, quite possibly a substantial one depending on whether the NPCs' discipline holds?

The intention is not for him to gain Will from blowing up NPCs in general. I could have been clearer in the explanation. The idea is that his drawings gain him Will the same way as other Talent usage gains will. If he kills an enemy Talent, he gains their Command stat in Will. Also, his skill is 7d so if he rolls a width of 10 he gains a Will. If he did something spectacular with his power, like thwarting a company's advance or saving the life of a fellow ubermensch with a well placed bomb, he could gain a Will that way. He wouldn't just gain Will from blowing up NPCs, just as the PCs don't normally gain Will from taking down mundane troops.

Could he leave his drawings in nearly inaccessible areas or areas where people wouldn't think to look? Could he put on the inside face of a wall as long as it is in the Area required? By that I mean an outer wall of a building but the drawing is on the inside of the wall-facing an interior room rather than the street.

Those are really good questions.

Since the character is an NPC, it's up to the GM how his power would work. The drawing creates a psychic artifact. From the first example used in the adventure, the artifact is an actual explosive that the Ubermensch is familiar with. It's invisible to mundane troops, but Talents see it as a German s-mine with standard wire fuses. Other than looking like all of the components were made of black glass, the booby trap is a standard mine.

With that in mind, the drawing would have to be placed in a position where a real booby trap would work. He could tack a drawing up to the back of a door; anyone bursting through the door would trigger the bomb. He could put a drawing inside the reservoir of a toilet and anyone flushing the toilet would set it off (and if that seems like a particularly odd suggestion, the Germans actually booby trapped a toilet in Ortona).

He could put a drawing on the inside wall of a house, but how would that get triggered by someone outside the house? He'd have to figure out a way to do that. If the wall has a hole to the outside, a real explosive could have a trip wire fuse running out that hole to the other side of the street. Therefore, this psychic artifact could do the same thing. The "trip wire" would be invisible to mundanes, but appear as a black glassy line across the street.

Surely a small container of paint would not be especially cumbersome-he could carry a flask/canteen full. I'm sure many towns have paints/dyes he could 'requisition'. Just thinking out loud.

Sure, that could work. It would take hours for the paint to dry in the humidity of Ortona, but I doubt it would be much harder to apply than, say, grease.

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] (Courtyard of Hell spoilers) When NPCs don't follow the rules

The book refers to combat rounds as generally lasting a few seconds-are they meant to be minutes in this case?

Garden variety force field generator? Are those that common among PC Talents? I suppose Heavy Armor might do the job as well except for that pesky Penetration.

As for the drawings, I have to ask again about blowing up NPCs. If he leaves an explosive in an area where non-Talents set it off wouldn't he have a net Will gain, quite possibly a substantial one depending on whether the NPCs' discipline holds? As for Talents, the sample characters don't tend to have much Base Will. I guess if they don't use their Talents they will have enough to survive.

Could he leave his drawings in nearly inaccessible areas or areas where people wouldn't think to look? Could he put on the inside face of a wall as long as it is in the Area required? By that I mean an outer wall of a building but the drawing is on the inside of the wall-facing an interior room rather than the street.

Surely a small container of paint would not be especially cumbersome-he could carry a flask/canteen full. I'm sure many towns have paints/dyes he could 'requisition'. Just thinking out loud.

He rolled width 2, added 1 with the wd, and waited.  The PCs took 2 or 3 combat rounds before entering the room, with the Germans barricaded in an adjoining room. He heard them break into the room and dropped the time fugue. Cost maybe 2 Will.  On rule breaking.

In the second quote, it's a suggestion for how the GM could use the character. With 12 Will, he could delay an explosion a dozen combat rounds (assuming width 2) and still have Will remaining.

Der Magier is nasty, but he can only hold the time fugue for a couple of minutes unless he stays close to his targets —  putting him in harm's way — and even then it only works if he continues retreating. Running through several rooms dropping grenades as he goes for only a round or two is a good way of delaying the PCs even if he doesn't do any damage.  He's a rear guard. Could he almost instakill a PC? Sure, but a garden variety force field generator is usually good enough to negate his power if they are careful.

As for Der Karikaturist knowing when someone triggers his explosives by hearing it go off, I didn't mean that he knows it was successful because he heard a loud bang in the middle of a battlefield. I mean that he could know without actually seeing it. This came out of one of our games where a PC threw an explosive at an Ubermensch and ducked out of the way. The explosion killed the Ubermensch. Another PC howled in appreciation. The player of the first PC asked if he got the Will for defeating an enemy Talent even though he didn't see it. I ruled that he did get the Will because he had aural proof of the kill. So, yes, simply hearing a bang isn't going to grant him the reward. Seeing someone approach his drawing and then hearing a bang and painful screaming after he turns away will grant him the reward. In other words, killing an enemy Talent with his power gets him Will the same way as killing an enemy Talent with any power, even without seeing the kill with his own eyes.

Talent killing is unlikely to gain Der Karikaturist much Will since a single Will point expenditure counters it. If he invests 2 or 3 it will only take out a PC really low in points. He can seed a couple of drawings each day, though, as he regains to Base Will each night.

He uses drawings and chalk because they are easy to carry. Paper and pencils are easy to acquire. Chalk is relatively easy to requisition. Grease is easy to find in the field (used by vehicles and artillery, and there is gun lubricant). He could requisition a can of paint but it would be messy and cumbersome, and really only available in rear maintenance areas.

[Seattle Go Center] this weeks SDK course -- Answers!

Hey all!

Last week we had Kuma sensei give a talk at the SDK class, and this week we'll return to our focus on reading effectively:  We've done over 150 problems over the last five weeks, and there are some that seemed to consistently trick people.  We'll examine what those problems have in common and maybe talk about some tricks of our own to be ready...

Also, Kuma's talk didn't preclude us from getting more weekly problems:  If you didn't see them, week 6's problems were given out last week and will be "due" on wednesday.  Pick them up here: https://goo.gl/Pfg9wd or check the folder for the previous weeks.

Wednesdays, 7:00pm-9:00pm

See you soon!

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] (Courtyard of Hell spoilers) When NPCs don't follow the rules

They are supposed to follow the rules.

During playtesting Der Magier did retreat fast enough to drop grenades, as the fighting was room to room. [Seattle Go Center] Drew is teaching DDK this Monday, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m.

Dear Members,

Nick Sibicky will be teaching the Double Digit Kyu Class (DDK Class) starting next week, Oct. 19.  In the meantime, Drew Barnett has volunteered to give a lecture this Monday, Oct. 12, 6:30 p.m. at the Seattle Go Center.  No pressure, Drew, but our last substitute was a 6 Dan pro (Kuma Sensei) who spoke 3 languages  ;-)

This class is DDK friendly, but probably of interest to stronger players as well.  Please give Drew a warm welcome for his first Go lecture!

Cheers,

Brian Allen

manager@seattlego.org

Here is Drew’s program:

Hello everyone, I am Drew Barnett, recent 1d, and I will be teaching this coming Monday night's class. Some of you may know me for having an eclectic style of play, and I have spent some time preparing an hour length lecture for you all, hoping to shed some light on the particular (and some might say peculiar) way of looking at the game that gives my play its flavor. The primary focus of the lecture will be on shape analysis, building all the way up from a new player's basic rules introduction to calculating stone efficiencies in complex shapes. This should hopefully be helpful to brand new players and veterans alike, by providing a new framework for examining the age-old of question of "what's the best move?"

As always, bring some records of recent games or problems you are having trouble solving, we will have some time after the lecture to play and study some. Hope to see you there!

[ORE] [Godlike] (Courtyard of Hell spoilers) When NPCs don't follow the rules

One of the Ubermenschen has the Time Fugue ability. According to the corebook objects only stay 'frozen' for a number of rounds equal to the width of the roll, with an option to extend the length by paying 1 Will for each additional round. You can also only freeze a number of objects equal to the number of dice in your dice pool at any give time.

The following quotes don't line up with the ability: "Der Magier seeded several buildings with grenades, as he retreated through the structures. These grenades are not visible to the Canadians
due to his time fugue ability." How does he accomplish this when the grenades should only be frozen for a few rounds at most? He doesn't have any sort of speed power, so I doubt he retreated fast enough to freeze anything long enough to make his trick work.

Another quote: "Given the number of times the building changed hands, if Der Magier is still kicking he could very well have been recruited to place a bomb of some sort in a time fugue the last time the Germans occupied the building, with or without any forewarning that the PCs might be involved."

One last one: "Once the Talents enter the building, Der Magier will return the det cord from its time fugued state. The PCs have one combat round before the cord detonates the explosives, bringing the building down on top of them."

As written he doesn't have any 'super-extending duration' Extra, nor would it seem remotely balanced to give such an Extra without allowing it for the PCs as well. If played as written it would seem that PCs are very likely to suffer horrific damage from an attack they can't even detect, much less prevent.

I had a similar problem with the Ubermensch with Psychic Artifact in the form of drawings- the explosives can go off over and over (each time someone triggers them) as long as the drawing is intact. It says that he has to invest Will in them but gains 1 Will each time he has proof of the explosives going off (such as seeing or hearing them-I wonder how he knows they are his explosives and not someone else's-do no other Germans use explosives in that area and he can tell them from explosives the PCs might be using? He doesn't have HyperSense which would make that remotely feasible). If he has proof they have 'gone off' then it would seem they are effectively free unless the PCs spend Will to neutralize them-which could be a problem if an area is seeded with them. Presumably he could gain multiple Will if the explosives weren't neutralized (and there's no guarantee that Talents will come across them-setting them up to blow up NPCs over and over could be a big Will gain).

I presume he uses chalk, grease, and paper sketches to give the PCs a chance, even though paint would be a lot harder to remove?

[Seattle Go Center] Tomorrow (Sunday 10/11) - Study Group!

The strong players' study group is on tomorrow from 1pm-5pm. If you're dan-level or dangerously close, stop by the go center - there have been many exciting professional games recently played in the Samsung Cup that I'm planning to review (this one in particular I found super interesting: http://www.go4go.net/go/games/sgfview/50321 ).

[Seattle Go Center] 20th Anniversary Tournament Results

Dear Members,

We had a fine tournament to celebrate our 20th Anniversary last Saturday, Oct. 3.   It was the largest fall tournament we have had in many years, with 48 players participating.  Our well organized TD’s, Bill Chiles and Dan Top, kept the event on schedule despite the large crowd.  The players were smoothly distributed in terms of strength, so that most of the handicapped games used small handicaps.  (88% of the handicapped games used two stones or just komi to balance the games.)

The Open Section had 8 players and was won by Edward Kim 7d.   Edward bested Chanseok Oh, Jeremiah Donley, and Peter Nelson in his three games.  Peter Nelson placed 2nd in the Open Section.

Chris Kirschner won all his games in the Dan Handicapped Section, winning that section.  Ben Hakala placed 2nd.  Jung Doo Nam won the Single Digit Kyu Player Handicapped Section, with David Snow placing second.  Mark Richardson won the Double Digit Kyu Player Handicapped Section, with Lucy Wang placing second.

The next ratings tournament is Sunday, November 1.  The next big tournament is the Jen Chen Memorial, on Sunday, January 3, 2016.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Kuma Sensei

Sorry beginners: Kuma Sensei WILL NOT be gracing beginner's night with his presence.

As usual it's just me and Janice Kim's books from 6:30 to 9 pm today, Thursday.
We will continue to go through Volume 2 of Learning to Play Go, and play some games.

The Go Center is open from 2pm to 9pm today for companionship, Go fellowship, good spirited horseplay and casual or rated self paired Go games.

[Seattle Go Center] Big Tuesday Today - Oct 6

Dear Members,

Tonight Kuma Sensei 6P from the Nihon Ki-in will be playing simultaneous games at 6:30.  He does a short review at the end of each game. We still have some space available.  Send me an email if you want to be added to the list.  manager@seattlego.org  As part of our 20th Anniversary celebration, there is no charge for these games.

Over 100 people came to our Anniversary Party on Saturday, but we still have some leftover food to share.  We have Korean barbeque: beef bulgogi and pork bulgogi, rice and side dishes, and some vegetarian Mediterranean dishes.

We also have a guest from the European Go Cultural Centre in Holland.  He is Harry van der Krogt, and he is a 2 dan amateur in the European Go Ratings system, which is tougher than our AGA rating system.  The European Go Cultural Centre is another one of the Iwamoto Centers, made possible by a gift from Kaoru Iwamoto 9 Dan.  Harry is the Manager, and he is also a photographer.  Welcome Harry!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Parking Report

Dear Members,

AS expected, parking is very tight near the Go Center. We are reserving the lower lot for handicapped, food deliveries, chair deliveries, and the Japanese Consul.

The upper lot is almost full. A few cars may leave after the tournament.

The diamond lot across the street is your best bet. This is paid parking - you need a credit card to pay. $5 for 4 hours. Note: you have to take three cross walks.

The diamond lot across from the Cinema was full a half hour. But it may open up when a movie lets out.

Cheers,
Brian
