[Seattle Go Center] Outreach teaching Sat July 8, and Sat Sun July 15-16

Dear Go Teachers,

We have two outreach events coming up in July.

We have a booth rented at the Japan Fair at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.  This is the same fair that was held in September last year, and it is the biggest Japanese cultural celebration on the Eastside. I am looking for teachers for Saturday, July 8, between 9:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.   We have a small booth, with room for only two volunteers, so we need to schedule this, so that we don’t get too crowded.  If you would like to help out for part of this time, please contact me.  We already have teachers scheduled for Sunday, July 9.  The organizers promise that we will be far from the Taiko drums this year!

The next weekend, July 15-16, we will be at the Bon Odori Festival, which is near the International District, at the Seattle Buddhist Temple, 1427 S Main St, Seattle, WA 98144.   We will have two tables in the gym, near the Ikebana, while there will be traditional Japanese folk dancing in the street.  Aki Sato will be our lead volunteer at this event. We have room for two more teachers on Saturday, from 4 to 9 pm, and three more teachers on Sunday, from 3 to 8 pm.  Since we have more room at this event, we do not have to be as careful with our scheduling, but please let me know if you would like to teach.

[Seattle Go Center] Early July Schedule - Lots of Go!

Dear Go Players,

The Seattle Go Center will be open a lot in early July.  What better way to celebrate the 4th of July holiday than to play some Go? On Saturday, July 1, we will have regular hours, 1-7 p.m., with Larry Eclipse as manager.

On Sunday, July 2, we will have the Monthly Ratings Tournament, with registration between 10 and 10:45 a.m.  The tournament is free, but please make sure your AGA membership is up to date.

We will be closed on Monday July 3.  (But we will have DDK classes with Jonathan (Chin Jung) Cheng on July 10, 17 and 24.)

On Tuesday, July 4, we will open early, stating at noon, and close early, at 6 p.m.  If the weather cooperates, we will have a barbeque ready on the front roof.  So bring food to grill.  Chris K. is planning on baking hamburger buns and hot dog rolls.

In case you were wondering, let me state that the view of the Lake Union 4th of July Fireworks is not very good from the Go Center.  However, members can park in our lot in the evening, and walk to Wallingford Avenue below 40th St, which is closed to cars, and watch from there.  This is a little more than a mile from the Go Center.  On fireworks nights, there is no street parking left in Wallingford in the evening. If you park at the Go Center, be sure to put out your parking pass!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Improve Your Reading!

Hey Everyone-
Tomorrow will be my last class teaching for the 2016-2017 session. The DDK class will continue until August, but will be lead by some other talented players. I do hope to see you all at the US Go Congress, though, or back in class in September!

Anyway, I that that the last class of the year should improve the single most important asset to your game: your reading ability! We will focus our attention on a series of Life and Death problems; however, students WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PLACE ANY STONES ON THE BOARD in order to solve. They must do all of the reading in their own heads!

I hope to see you there,

[Seattle Go Center] Correction: Last Exit Reunion Friday JUNE 23 4:00 p.m.

Correction: I meant June, not July! Improved message below:

Dear Go Players,

The old timers remind us that before the Seattle Go Center was founded, people played Go at the Last Exit on Brooklyn
coffeehouse, along with chess, bridge, backgammon, and risk.  That group of Go players was crucial in getting the Go
Center started.

This is the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the Last Exit in the University District of Seattle. There will be a two
weekend reunion of the Last Exit group, including an afternoon and evening at the Seattle Go Center on Friday, June 23,
starting at 4:00 p.m.  The full schedule is here:
http://www.lastexit50th.org/

Re: [ORE] Regen question

Ordinarily I ruled that it would, although in the one case that someone had their arm removed by a demigod, I had them do the following:
Every day, roll your regeneration pool: on a success, you get one hit box back.

It took a while.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Andrew Jackson Hides at Go!

Hey Go Fans-
So the illustrious Andrew Jackson (of AlphaGo commenting fame!) has agreed to play me in a super-special live exhibition match this Monday. However, instead of playing Go as we all know it (and now know that computers have rendered humans obsolete) we are going to play my favorite Go variant, Hidden Move Go. In this Go variant, players start with several moves already "placed" on the board at the start of the game that their respective opponent cannot see/know. Play proceeds as normal, until these hidden moves become discovered. Spectators for this special event will know where all the hidden moves are, even though Andrew an I won't.

This Go variation makes for some VERY exciting situations, as every ko-fight turns into a bluffing match, every ladder turns into a push-your-luck scenario, and every deep invasion requires a poker face. I anticipate this game being extraordinarily fun, you won't want to miss it!

[Seattle Go Center] Summer Thursdays are bigger

Dear Go Players,

Now that the students at UW are finishing up, and summer visitors are showing up, I expect Thursdays at the Go Center to be busier.  Nathan Saritzky 9k has volunteered to be summer afternoon manager, and will start this afternoon.  (Thanks Nathan!)  I will also be there this afternoon, as well as Lucy Lu Wang, and probably Sonny Cho 5d.

Larry will be available to teach beginners in the evening, including people who are making their first visit to the Go Center.  You can also find a game in the evening, especially if you are a kyu player.

We are open from 2 – 9 p.m.   Larry starts teaching at 6:30 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[ORE] [Better Angels] Generosity and Cash

Both No Soul Left Behind and The Good, The Bad, and The Hunky include situations where acquiring a sum of money allows the characters to increase their Generosity tactic directly.  You can certainly read the Generosity cost of constructing Devilish Devices as meaning you are less generous because you can no longer afford to be, so I can understand where the idea of a cash to Generosity exchange comes from.  However, this is the only instance in the game where characters can increase a virtuous tactic directly.  Moreover it does not take into consideration where the money comes from, leading to characters robbing banks to increase their Generosity because it is simply more efficient than increasing Greed and then repenting to shift a point to Generosity.  As a result equating wealth with Generosity opens up a problematic loophole in the moral calculus that is central to the game.

Has this been a problem for others?  How have you addressed it?

[Seattle Go Center] Plenty of Players

Dear Go Players,

Today, Tuesday, June 6 will probably be a big day and evening at the Go Center.  This may surprise folks new to Seattle, but we have some of our biggest nights when the weather is beautiful, and the sun sets late.  Often new people search us out when the weather gets good.  Some come on by!  We are open 1-10 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: ALPHA GO VS ALPHA GO

Hey Everyone-
I want to start digging into the Alpha Go Self-Play game collection. This cache of games will likely be studied by professionals for quite some time and will also dictate many trends and styles of professional-level play for the next year. So, during tomorrow's class I think it would be a good idea to introduce one of these games and give you my own take on AG's style. I hope that you will be there!

[Seattle Go Center] June Ratings Tournament this Sunday June 4

Dear Go Players,

Here is a friendly reminder that is now June, and the Monthly Ratings Tournament is this Sunday, June 4, at the Seattle
Go Center.

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. 3 rounds, Japanese rules. The tournament is free, but you
need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which
gives you ten free visits.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock
starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit. If you come before 12:30 and
register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am. Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner. If your first game runs long, you do
not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going
out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to
be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center
as well, but please come early to do that.

You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

Cheers,
Brian
manager@seattlego.org
