[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday April 2

Dear Go Players,

Our Monthly Ratings Tournament is coming up this Sunday, April 2, starting at 10:00 a.m. This tournament is free.
Your visit to the Go Center is also free if you are under 18, a new member, or a yearly or lifetime member. Otherwise
you need to use your 10-visit card, or pay for your visit. Our next tournament after this is the big Spring Tournament,
on Sunday May 7. It will have a fee, but it will also have prizes.

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face. Three rounds, Japanese rules. You do not have play all three
rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director, Bill Chiles, what your plans are.

Registration is from 10:00 - 10:45 sharp. You can call 206 545-1424 if you will run late. If you call in, your clock
starts 10 min into the first round, and after 30 min, if you do not show, you forfeit. If you come before 12:30 and
register, you will probably be able to play in the second round.

First round starts at 11 am. Second round starts by 1:30, but may start sooner. If your first game runs long, you do
not have much time for lunch. We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going
out to get lunch.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to
be updated. More info on membership is at www.usgo.org. You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center
as well, but please come early to do that.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Gobans restored by bill camp

Dear Members,

If you are interested in gobans (floor boards), let me recommend this website to you:
https://www.kimonoquilt.com/

It has a collection of gobans restored by bill camp, which are for sale.   Many of you may remember bill from 2012 and
2013, when he was an active teacher and a reliable volunteer at the Go Center.  He redid the shoji screens for the tatami
room.  bill was also Manager of the Go Center in the early days, from 1995 - 1998.

bill is now in Australia, as are the gobans.  But he says that shipping a goban to the U.S. only adds $200 to the price.  So
take a look.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Pro Visit from Bian Wenkai

Dear Members,

Bian Wenkai, the young pro from the Nihon Ki-in, is now in Seattle.  He was a very friendly and patient teacher at the McDonald Go Club this afternoon. Bian Sensei started playing Go in Shanghai China when he was 5 years old.  His family moved to Japan when he was 8.  Later on, he got serious about Go, and became an insei when he was high school aged.

Here is his schedule at the Go Center:

Saturday, March 25: simultaneous games at 2 pm. ($10)

Sunday, March 26: Free lecture at 2 pm.  He will review two of his games.  The first game he played many years ago, and he lost by .5 point.  It is burned into his memory.  The second is a recent game from the young professional’s tournament.

Monday, March 27:  Nick’s Class, starting at 6:30.   Free Lecture for DDK players, and players up to 5 kyu, probably on tesuji.

Tuesday, March  28: Simultaneous games at 7. ($10)

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tonight - Fun night, everyone welcome!

Hi all! Tonight we'll have a grab-bag of sorts: I'll put up the third round of the World Go Championship stream on the projector, and during slow moments between moves, we can go over anything you like - the previous two rounds of the WGC, reviews of your own games, opening/joseki/tesuji questions, life & death problems, whatever!

I'll open the Go Center from about 6:30pm until 9:00pm tonight, half an hour earlier than usual. Feel free to drop by tonight regardless of your strength!

[Seattle Go Center] Lucy Lu Wang elected to Board of Directors

Dear Members,

I am pleased to announce that Lucy Lu Wang was elected to the Board of Directors at the Annual Meeting yesterday.   Lucy has been a great volunteer for the Go Center, as a day manger on Thursday afternoons, at outreach events, and also as a Go teacher with Sonny Cho at the Northwest Chinese School in Bellevue.  In addition, she speaks Chinese, which is very helpful for the Go Center.  She is a graduate of MIT, now working on her PhD at UW.  Please welcome Lucy!

Dengda (Dan) Tang has finished his second three year term as Director of the Go Center, and is retiring from the Board.  We appreciate his steady support of the Go Center, and we hope that we will continue to see him at our tournaments and events.

Lee Anne Bowie and Bill Chiles were re-elected to the Board at the Annual Meeting.  At the Board of Directors meeting following the Annual Meeting, the officers were selected.  They are:

Lee Anne Bowie – continuing as President

Bill Chiles – continuing as Vice President

Hikojiro (Hiko) Katsuhisa – continuing as Treasurer.

Lucy Lu Wang - Secretary

By the way, the Seattle Go Center is a nonprofit corporation organized under the laws of the State of Washington.  Our formal name is the Nihon Ki-in Go Institute of the West.  We are governed by a 9 member Board of Directors.  Three Directors are elected each year by the yearly and lifetime members.  Our building is owned by a nonprofit in Japan, the Nihon Ki-in.  We have a long term management contract and lease with them for the use of the building.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Tuesday and World Go Championship

Dear Go Players,

We will be watching the 2nd day of the World Go Championship tomorrow evening at the Go Center, in addition to our regular Tuesday events.  The games start at 6:30 p.m. our time.   As I write this at 10:15 pm Monday, the first day games are still being broadcast on youtube.  There are two games.  At times, there is commentary in English by Michael Redmond, 9P and Antti Torman 1P.  At other times, the channel just shows the players of the games, or the boards themselves.

[Seattle Go Center] Annual Meeting Tomorrow, Sunday March 19 at 2 p.m.

Dear Members,

Here is a friendly reminder that the Annual Meeting of the Seattle Go Center will be on Sunday Afternoon, March 19, from 2 - 3 p.m. All members are welcome.  We will have a short slide show, including some images that we will never put on the internet.  There will also be snacks, and reports on the year, and elections to 3 board positions.  Donors to our Go board refinishing project will be asked to sign the backsides of our newly redone boards.

If you are a voting member of the Go Center (yearly or lifetime member), and you are not coming to this meeting, please give your proxy to a voting member who is coming to the meeting, so that we can make our quorum – that is, have enough members represented so that the meeting is legal.  You can do this by email.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Open today, Thursday May 16 2-9 pm

Dear Go Players,

The Go Center will be open today, Thursday,  from 2-9 pm as usual.  Dan player Chris Kirschner will be available for teaching games in the afternoon.  Our volunteers lead complicated lives, but I think we will have some other Go instructors there as well in the afternoon.  Larry Eclipse will be teaching beginners and advanced beginners in the evening, starting at 6:30.  Usually these are individual lessons or small group lessons.  This is a great opportunity if you want a regular weekly lesson.  The lessons are free, and your first 10 visits are free as well.

Cheers,

[Seattle Go Center] Camping trip with Go, Aug 24 - 27

Dear Members,

Deborah and I have reserved a camping spot at Marble Creek Campground in the Mt Baker Snoqualmie National Forest in the North Cascades for the nights of Thursday Aug 24 – Saturday Aug 26.   We encourage other Go players to come car camp with us at this small Forest Service campground.  It has really big trees, and it is next to the Cascade River, which has nice gravel bars.  This is usually a quiet campground.

The campsites do not have potable water.  Water is available in the town of  Marblemount WA, on Rt 20, which is about 8 miles away.  There is a lot of excellent hiking in the area, some of it quite challenging.  Or you can laze about the campsite, and play Go.

Last I checked, there were two more campsites available for reservations.  They are $14/night, plus the cost of a pass that is good for Forest Service facilities.  Other sites will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Here is the link:

https://www.recreation.gov/camping/marble-creek-campground/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NRSO&parkId=73773

Come join us!

Re: [ORE] House Guideline: Booster and Attacks

A Useful TK can still lift an aircraft carrier and drop it on an enemy, drop them from a great height, collapse a building on them, etc. and allow the normal rules for environmental damage, collisions, etc. to follow their natural course.

It doesn't have the instantaneous effect of straight Attacks damage, and may run afoul of Immunity powers or similar, but it's always an option. Summoning lava around someone may not be an Attacks set, but they still have to deal with lava pouring down around them.

IIRC there's a sidebar about "dangerously Useful" powers, but I don't have my book handy.

On Thu, Feb 9, 2017 at 10:35 AM, Wade Lahoda <wade.lahoda@gmail.com> wrote:
I'll find, left to their own devices, players will load up on a bunch of Booster for a power like telekinesis. Because it feels awesome to be able to lift an aircraft carrier, don't it?

And then they'll go to smash someone with their often telekenitic might and......be totally underwhelmed when they do as much damage as some dude with a pistol. "It makes no sense!", they'll say, "That I can lift a million tons but I can't squish a normal human without getting lucky on my roll!"

So I usually advice people - for every level of Booster you take for the Useful quality of a power, if it also has an Attacks quality, throw on a level of Attacks as well. Same for stuff like Hyperbody and Booster, too.

Makes things feel a lot less wonky.

[Seattle Go Center] Childrens Tournament this Sunday March 12

Dear Parents and Players,

The Spring Children’s Tournament will be this Sunday, March 12, starting at 10:30 a.m.  All players  14 and under are welcome. There will be prizes – including trophies, medals, books and equipment.  There will also be free pizza!

Please note that this will be the first day of Daylight Savings Time, so 10:30 a.m. comes an hour earlier.

This tournament will have three sections, so that players at all levels can participate.  There will be 19×19 games for older players; 19×19 games for younger players, and 13×13 games for all ages.  We expect to finish around 4 p.m., but the 13x13 groups may finish earlier.  The 13x13 tournament will also be more informal – good for players who can’t stay the whole time.

This is not a rated tournament, so children do not have to be  AGA members to participate.

There is no charge for this event; registration is at the beginning of the day.  However, if you think your family is coming, it would be helpful if you sent me an email in advance.

Cheers,

Brian Allen

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tonight - 3-space Invasions

Hi all! Tonight we're going to look at how to invade areas where your opponent's stones (on the 3rd and/or 4th line) are separated by precisely 3 spaces. When is the right time to invade? What should I consider before placing that first invasion stone? What are the common sequences and their results? We'll cover it all! (or at least a decent chunk of it).

As always, we'll have time at the end for game reviews - feel free to email me the game record ahead of time ( peternelson815@gmail.com ) or just bring it to class.

Hope to see you tonight at 7pm!

[Seattle Go Center] Annual Meeting Sunday March 19 at 2 PM

Dear Members,

The Annual Meeting of the Seattle Go Center will be on Sunday Afternoon, March 19, from 2 - 3 p.m. All members are
welcome. We will have a short slide show, snacks, and reports on the year. Donors to our Go board refinishing project
will be asked to sign the backside of our newly redone boards.

There will be elections for three positions on our 9 person nonprofit Board of Directors. The positions are currently held
by Bill Chiles, Lee Anne Bowie, and Dengda (Dan) Tang. Lifetime, Yearly and Quarterly members have voting rights in the
election. (In other words, they are "voting members".) If you are a voting member, please come to this meeting, or find
another voting member to take your proxy for the election.

After the Annual Meeting, the Board of Directors will meet. If you have not been elected to the Board, this is a good time
to get in a game or two.

Cheers,
Brian

We are looking for an outreach volunteer or volunteers to teach Go for one session at Salmon Bay Elementary in Ballard.  This is for Pi Night: an evening of math games and pie, which runs from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.  I had a lot of fun there last year, and two kinds of pie.

Dear Players,

The Hurry Curry meetup in South Lake Union is continuing, so come on by, and get dinner at happy hour prices, and also have a game of Go, or some informal instruction.  Look for Michael Zhang the next two weeks; after that, the lead volunteer will be Dan Top.

They will meet tonight on

Monday, March 6, 2017

5:30 – 8:00 PM

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: MORE Mi Yuting

Hey Go Friends-
Last week we looked at a recent tournament game by Mi Yuting, the young chinese phenom go player (who is probably the person to come closest to beating the latest version of Alpha Go). Mi Yuting's style is a bit....uncompromising, and reading through his game last week we were all kept on the edge of our seats.

This week, I want to look at another recent Mi Yuting tournament game, in which he goes up against Huang Yunsong; another very young Chinese phenom. You won't want to miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Outreach volunteers needed for March 10 and March 24

Dear Go Teachers,

We need  second volunteers for two Friday evening outreach events.

On Friday, March 10, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Dan Top will be the lead volunteer at Japan Night at John Stanford International School.  We will be teaching Capture Go, and playing 9x9 games with students who already know the game.  We often have a Go Club at this nearby elementary school, and we hope to get it running again next fall.

On Friday, March 24, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m., Dennis Wheeler will be teaching at the Cherry Blossom Festival at Kentlake High School, down in Kent.  Set-up is around 4:30.  It would be great if you could help will all or part of this event.

Please contact me at manager@seattlego.org if you are interested in helping out.

Cheers,

Brian
