Re: [ORE] Powers with Multiple Qualities - Just Say No?

An ADU variable effect can simultaneously emulate a quality with *each quality*  it has -- so can power-copy one attack, one defends, and one useful quality at a time without splitting them into reduced dice pools.

IIRC there are only three major differences between multi-quality powers vs. several single-quality ones:
1) the qualities in a power must share the same sources for purposes of nullification, etc..
2) they must have identical dice
3) they must share the same focus, if any

And, as Allan noted (and he would know), one power satisfies the One Power permission.

She had 8 dice in her power mimic power but would often find she couldn't fully copy a subject because he would have, for instance, 8 dice in one attack power and 8 more in a separate defense power. She could only copy one, or two at partial effect.

Then I realized shoving the qualities together in 2e is an artificial construct that was hurting the character concept. So I rebuilt her power into three separately purchased qualities, giving her separate attack, defend, and useful pools. These were already bought in such a way as to trigger automatically when she initiates the shapeshift, so there's no real downside to having three automatically triggers powers.

While rebuilding the power, I also realized if I'm building qualities separately, there's no reason to assume each quality should have the same number and type of dice. Sure, you might WANT to, but there was zero reason to make that the default assumption. In fact, many times there's real benefit to - for example, making all the defense dice hard while keeping all the attack dice normal, or maybe a couple of wiggle dice.

In WT1, there was actually a mechanical reason to keep qualities together: lower point cost. On WT2, this is not a factor.

So... Powers with multiple qualities? No thanks.

[Seattle Go Center] Saturday at the Go Center, 27 Sept -- Jubango game 8

Today at the Seattle Go Center

Open play for anyone. There's usually enough people throughout the day to get a couple of games for everyone.
We can teach beginners how to play if you know someone who wants to learn (because they'll likely never see this email otherwise)

Simon 1p is back in town. Will he resume teaching today? I don't know.
I also haven't heard if John Richards will resume teaching his students at the Go Center today either.

1pm to 7pm are our regular hours on Saturdays.
$5 daily fee, includes free parking (don't forget your parking sticker). Cheaper options are available by purchasing 10-visit punch cards, or monthly or yearly memberships.

Tonight is game 8 of the Gu Li - Lee Sedol Jubango.
Gu Li is down 5 games to 2, so this could be the last game in the match. He has to win the next 3 games in a row just to tie the mach against Lee Sedol.

The game starts at 6pm. We'll project the game on the wall for everyone to watch, and maybe even logon and watch the commentary on Baduk TV which starts a few hours later (but its only in Korean).
The Go Center will be open until the end of the game -- usually around 2am.

So come by for any or all of the match, and maybe get in some games of your own.
These games have been fascinating to watch and discuss.

Re: [ORE] Powers with Multiple Qualities - Just Say No?

Yeah, in WT1 there was a 1/2/4 point cost overhead for each power. Having Attacks, Defends, Useful cost 4 points, while having four powers that were Attacks only, Defends only, and Useful only cost a total of 6 points. (It's worse than that, because chances are you'd want the power to be Robust, which would up a single power to 5 points and the individual powers to 3 points each, for a total of 9 points).

WT2 doesn't have that. A power with Attacks, Defends and Useful costs the same per die as a power with Attacks, a power with Defends, and a power with Useful, assuming everything else is equal.

For the most part there's no difference between creating one combined power or several separate powers. You can even stat out three separate powers and just say it's one power. The only time you'd have to, for sure, combine it into one power is if you had something like the One Power permission in your Archetype that limited you to a single power.

One mechanical disadvantage would be on a power with, say, endless or permanent, and it was shut down due to enemy action. Restarting your one power again would be a single action, while restarting the three separate powers would be three actions.

If you or someone in your group uses Augment, you'd be better off with a combined power rather than individual powers. If your power with Augment has only one quality, that's the only quality it can augment in another power (either your power or someone else's power). You could create three powers with Augment, each Augmenting a different quality. But if another character has, say, a power with ADU and you want to Augment all three qualities of that power, you can only do that as a multiple action. If you had a single power with ADU, it could Augment any other power -- regardless of the qualities -- with a single action. Likewise, if you have an Augment power with ADU and your buddy has three powers, each with one capacity, you're going to have to do three actions to Augment each of his powers. One Augment power with ADU is more efficient than three Augment powers with individual qualities.

As an aside, you can gain efficiencies by building powers with single qualities and then playing with the dice pool size, as you mentioned. You just have to be careful you don't box yourself in during play. An 8d power with ADU might not be necessary when you only ever need 2hd in the D quality. Bear in mind, though, that the dice pool size dictates the limit on capacities. An 8d power has greater range, greater mass, greater speed, etc. than a 2hd power. More importantly, when you conduct multiple actions you roll the smallest of the two dice pools. If you want to use your 8d Attack and your 2hd Defends power, you can't as you'll never be able to get two results out of 2hd. Splitting the powers gives you more flexibility and control, but it could hamstring you if you didn't think through all the implications.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class: Nick Sibicky Returns on 9/29!

Hi Everyone!

We are gearing up to start our fall season DDK class this coming Monday, 9/29 with a pro game review of a game by Sasaki Tadashi 8P. As you may have heard, Sasaki Sensei passed away earlier this year, and he was a dear friend of the Seattle Go Center and of American Go in general.

The game that I would like to review is from the 2009 Meijin tournament, where Sasaki faces off against Kudo Norio 9P. The opening of the game is very clear and very stubborn; both players are content to take solid territory immediately, even resorting to using several crude moves. Eventually, Sasaki gets a little bit more territory, but Kudo is compensated with making a moyo. Sasaki decides he needs to live inside of his opponent's moyo and plays a reduction that might be a little too deep for his own good....find out what happens after that in the game at our next DDK class!

I hope to see you there!

Nick Sibicky

[Seattle Go Center] Peter Nelson wins Pandanet Qualifier Tournament

Dear Members,

Peter Nelson, a recent arrival to Seattle from Minnesota, was selected Sunday for the Seattle 1 Pandanet-AGA  City League Team, after winning the Qualifier Tournament at the Seattle Go Center by a narrow margin.  Longtime Northwest player Edward Kim placed second at the tournament, with the same win/loss record, and will also join the team.  Returning first team members are Simon (Ximeng) Yu, and Ho Son.  Momoko Tsutsui has moved from Seattle, and will not be on our team this year.

The Seattle Pandanet-AGA team placed second last August in the A League competition, losing to the team from neighboring Vancouver B.C.  The board order for the teams in the  online tournament is determined by AGA ratings, so Nelson will probably have the alternate position.  Nelson had an AGA rating of 3 dan last month, and has a 4 dan rating at present.  However, he won two even games against a 7 dan at the tournament, plus a game against Xiaowu Li, who is a 5 dan in China, so observers expect his rating to continue to improve.

The open tournament was a challenge to both players and Tournament Directors Sonny Cho and Dennis Wheeler.  Due to "circular wins" four players had identical records after four rounds, necessitating a playoff round.  The tournament lasted 9 hours and some players had five games.  In addition to Peter Nelson and Edward Kim, Dong Baek Kim and Xiaowu Li were finalists.  This was the first Seattle event for Xiaowu Li, a Visiting Scholar at the University of Washington Law School, and former director of the faculty go club at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.  We look forward to seeing him at other events.

The Seattle Go Center thanks Sonny Cho for organizing this event, and we wish the Seattle City League first team continued success in the coming year!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Regular Saturday, Strong Players on Sunday 21.

Dear Go Players,

We will be open our regular hours on Saturday Sept. 20, 1-7 pm, with Dennis Wheeler as manager.  Simon (Ximeng) Yu, our young professional, will not be teaching this Saturday, but he will be back in town soon.  John Richards is hoping to come in this Saturday to teach children, last I heard.

On Sunday, Sept 21, we have the Pandanet Qualifying Tournament for players who are at least AGA 5d or equivalent strength.  Of course, our less strong players are free to watch, and maybe get in some informal games.  Tournament Registration is at 10:00, and the fee is $10.  There are prizes!  More information at http://www.seattlego.org/events/  (Click on the tournament listing for more info).

[Seattle Go Center] Wed Class Sept 17 with Sonny Cho

Dear Go Players,

This week, the Single Digit Kyu Players Class (SDK Class) will be taught by Sonny Cho 6d.  Sonny is the organizer for many of our strong player events, including the Pandanet Qualifier Tournament on Sept. 21.  He is also a friendly and thoughtful teacher.  Sonny used to be a regular on Tuesday Evenings at the Go Center, but then his schedule changed, and he hasn’t been able to travel on weekdays from the Eastside where he lives.  So this a rare chance to get a lesson from Sonny at the Go Center.

Sonny Cho’s lesson will be “Ten Things Kyu Players Must Know”.  We look forward to it.

Cheers,

Brian

[ORE] One Roll Patreon update

In case you missed the Patreon survey yesterday:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/124_xv4G_I0vfgqxQvfBBANWhlA5w4TWZjGFvFYDkBhg/viewform?usp=send_form

or

SUMMARY:

Arc Dream Publishing (www.arcdream.com) might set up Patreon (www.patreon.com) accounts to support new scenarios, characters, locations, etc., for our role-playing games. Each new thing that we produce will be written, edited, playtested where necessary, illustrated, and laid out by the award-winning Arc Dream team.

HOW IT WORKS: You don't get billed anything automatically. If we get enough money pledged to cover the cost of a project, we'll create the project. When it's ready, we'll tell Patreon to bill our patrons. You'll get a warning a few days out (see www.patreon.com for details) in case you changed your mind. Then you pay for the patronage and we send you the project. We say "$1 or more per month" because we expect to create new projects about one a month.

WHAT WE'LL MAKE: As a rule of thumb, at $100 in total patronage we'll create a short piece of work, a playable feature a couple of pages long: a detailed new NPC with scenario ideas, a detailed location with scenario ideas, a scenario starter based on material that's already available, etc. As the patronage goes up, so does the scale of each project. At $500 total patronage we'll produce a complete scenario, ready to play, or a substantial new piece of the game setting. We'll get feedback as we go to find out what our patrons want.

Vote to tell us which games and settings to expand.

Re: [ORE] Arc Dream Patreon survey

BTW, even though it should have been better -edited, I'd add Base Raiders to the list. The idea is fresh and interesting and it includes some fine alternate history.

[Seattle Go Center] Go Center Cleanup for Anniversary Party

Hi All,

I’m looking for a few volunteers to help clean the Go Center on Saturday Morning, 9:30 – 12:30.  If you can help during some of  those hours we would greatly appreciate it. We will be vacuuming, cleaning windows, and cleaning woodwork.  We will also wash stones if we have enough time.

The Go Center has most cleaning supplies, but if you have window washing tools, please bring them along.

The Anniversary Party is at 6:00 p.m., with potluck food and catered sushi served at 6:30.  “Silk Strings” will be performing at 8:00 p.m.  There is no charge – just bring some food or drink (juice, beer, wine, sake) to share!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night, Thursday 7pm, September 11, 2014

Dear Members,

Beginners of all sorts are invited to our weekly Beginner's Night. Come get more games in with other beginner's. Ask a more advanced player for a teaching game. Come work on graded go problems from our amazing library. Just come!!

This week Larry Eclipse will be covering for me this week, but I expect that he will happily offer a tailored introduction to the rules for absolute beginners.

The night formally lasts from 7-9 p.m. The Go Center opens at 2:00, and Frank Fukuda is available for afternoon games.

More experienced players, please, continue to come! Your experiences are many and much appreciated by a growing group of beginner's wanting to stay connected to Go.

Enjoy the night, and I look forward to hosting next week.

[Seattle Go Center] Tournament for Strong Players Sun Sept. 21 10 am

Dear Go Players,

The Pandanet Qualifying Tournament will be held at the Seattle Go Center on Sunday, September 21, at 10 a.m.  This is a tournament for strong players only: AGA 5d or stronger, or equivalent strength (Korean and Chinese 4 dan).  All games will be played even. There will be  $200 first prize, $100 2nd prize, and $10 entry fee.

Since this is rated tournament, you need to have an AGA membership to play.  If you do not have an AGA membership, please join online in advance at https://www.usgo.org/members/join.

The top two players from this tournament will be invited to join the AGA Pandanet City League Team, which represents Seattle in an online tournament that will run from October 2014 to August 2015.  Seattle placed 2nd in the City League Tournament last year, and the team members got a free trip to the 2014 Go Congress in New York, plus the team got $2500 in prize money.  This time, the top prize is $5000 for the team, and the trip is to the Go Congress in Minnesota.  Here are the rules for the City League: http://pandanet-igs.com/communities/agacityleague/113

If you are a strong player, you should come to this tournament, even if you do not want to compete in the Pandanet City League.  You will have a chance to play some high level games face to face, meet other strong players in the area and compete for prize money.  For more information, please contact Sonny (Sung-Chul) Cho at 425 457-2267, or me at the numbers below.

Cheers,

Brian

[ORE] Re: Where are the players?

1) G+ for me.

Greetings!
New to the ORE community here. Monsters and Wild Talents are on the shelf while Godlike is in the mail. Enjoyed reading them, looking forward to playing them! I've got two questions:

1. Where do players like me interact most online? The message boards, the g+ community page, or here?
2. Are there any players in the Portland, OR area?

Thanks!

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday Sept 7 - noon

Dear Go Players,

Our first tournament of the Fall is this Sunday, Sept 7, with registration from 12:00 – 12:45.  We have three rounds, ending around 6:00 p.m.  You do not have to play all three rounds; just tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face.  The tournament is free, but you need to pay for your visit to the Go Center, or be a voting member of the Go Center, or be a "new member" which gives you ten free visits.  We expect a wide range of players, from dan level to double digit kyu players.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at www.usgo.org.  You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.  You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Paid Go Club Teachers

Dear Go Center Members,

We are looking for more teachers and assistant teachers for Go Clubs on Monday afternoons (3:30 – 5) and also on Thursday afternoons (2:30 – 4:00) and also Thursdays (2:30 – 4:30).  The sessions will start in late September, and continue until early December.  The clubs will be at the schools, which are fairly close to the Go Center.  We have paid positions ($40/session) but volunteers are welcome to.

Our clubs have good teaching ratios, and the children really want to play Go, so these are fun positions for people who like to teach kids.  Please contact me if you want more information.

Regards,

Brian
