[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival Volunteer request

Dear Go Players,

We are hosting demo area again at this years Cherry Blossom Festival at the Seattle Center on April 12-14 (10am-5pm). The Seattle Go Center is one of the more popular demo area. Last year, we were able to reach hundreds of attendants. Because of this, we need around 8-10 volunteers to help manage the tables and teach people how to play the game through out the day. I am also looking for 1-2 people to help me with set up.

If you like to volunteer, or like to learn more about this event please email me at programs@seattlego.org

[Seattle Go Center] Mark Your Calendars -- Pro Visits 2024 (One Special Request)

Hey, all, because we've managed to line up a few pro visits this year already, I want to let folks think ahead to be in town.  Also, we will try a couple new things with a couple of the visits -- one workshop for teaching how to teach Go that should be interesting for volunteers and PPI folks and one day workshop for strong players (that others may benefit from as well).

We will have a pro a few days before the US Go Congress, hopefully for the Tue and Wed evening before the congress (09-10 JUL).

We will have a pro visit the Mon and Tue (22-23 JUL) after the Go Congress.  One of these evenings we will hold a teach the teacher workshop for folks who volunteer, want to spread Go, and for our teachers.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, by member request (thanks to those who poked me), I managed to get MIchael Redmond pro 9d to visit SGC in SEP, 13-15 SEP (thanks to the Nihon Ki-in for arranging).  I asked him if we could have a one-day normal workshop and a one-day strong players workshop (say 4-7d or lower ranks depending on pre-registration), and he is willing.  We look for input from the strong players, but our idea is that Redmond Sensei could play simuls in the morning, 10am-12pm, and after lunch break, he could review each game at the front of the room.  Attendees from day one could come and watch the game reviews.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Members Meeting Final Reminder and Requests

We will hold our annual members meeting Saturday  16 MAR at 2:00pm at the new SGC location.  We will review programs and events in 2023 and share financial info and space planning info.  I also attached the draft minutes from last year.  Please read them before the meeting and be prepared to comment or motion to approve.  We will have a few print outs before the meeting to look over.

PROXIES PLEASE!!.  We need 14 voting members (annual or lifetime) as a quorum.  If you cannot make the meeting, you can email manager@seattlego.org to register a proxy for yourself (notification goes to the secretary for recording).  We appreciate your naming proxies to ensure we have quorum for the meeting.

The nominated directors this year are:
 * Oren Laskin -- long time serving on the board, speaks Japanese, sometimes helps with translations
 * Chris Kirschner -- founding director, Tue bread baker, does many things for SGC and AGA
 * Saki Umezaki -- native Japanese speaker, mother of Ayumu, donated several Hikaru No Go books to complete our Japanese collection, played Go since she was 10, full-time mom, and studying to be a CPA.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Kids Time Sun, Wed class, and Meetups Reminder

Peter is back and hosting Kids Time.  Please try to come, the more the merrier 😊.

Drew is hosting open time Wed, 6-8pm, and leading a class for advancing through the kyuu ranks.  We encourage folks to check it out or just show up to play some Go.

David is hosting at Cap Hill Stoup Brewing Wed at 7pm.

Jay is hosting at Crossroads Mall food court Sat 2-5pm.

Zoka coffee in Greenlake area Mon 9am-noon.

All of the above are on our home page at seattlego.org on the right side.  We also just kicked off planning for an Everett meetup with about a dozen folks.  When that gets going, we'll announce it and put it on our website too.

Cheers,
Bill

I'm in Everett and I am interested as well.  I have one board and stones.

In a few days I'll send a mail to just the folks that responded to see what we can organize.  We can discuss more when we know who is interested.

Thanks,

Hi, community.  We're wondering whether there is enough interest in our creating a meetup in the Everett area (or Marysville or Arlington).  We had good success with members creating Crossroads and Cap Hill Stroup pub meetups.  There is a European 1k exchange student in the area who sent us mail that inspired this because they can't get to Seattle very easily.

Where and when and if is based on responses.  River may be able to host in Everett and facilitate finding a place.  I know we have long time members up in Bellingham (where there was a meetup pre-covid), but it is farther from Everett than I realized 😊.  SGC can provide a couple starter boards, but hopefully attendees have sets they could bring.

Please let us know if you are interested, if you can host sometimes, and when and where are good.

Thanks,
Bill
