[Seattle Go Center] Simultaneous Games with Pros on Tuesday, Aug 1

Dear Go Players,

Maeda Ryo 6P and Kang Min Hoo 2p, two professionals from the Kansai Ki-in in Japan, will be playing simultaneous games
at the Go Center on this Tuesday, Aug. 1. The first event will be at 3:00 p.m., and the second will be at 7:00 p.m. Both
pros will be playing both times. Games are $10, watching is free. You may sign up in advance by emailing me, or by using
the sign up sheet on the 2nd desk at the entrance to the playing room. Usually the evening games fill up.

Maeda Sensei and Kang Sensei are going to the U.S. Go Congress in San Diego, which starts Saturday Aug. 5. We are
happy that they included us in their visit!

Cheers,
Brian Allen

Deborah and I viewed the movie last night, and it is a must see for all Go players who are older than 10 years.  Younger players might be bored by the movie, but there is nothing unsuitable for young folk.  It's fun to see local players Chris Kirschner and Dennis Wheeler appear on the big screen.  The movie is also a good introduction to the "Three Kingdoms of Go": Japan, China and Korea, and should entertain anyone interested in cultural sharing between East Asia and the United States and Canada.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: How to reach single digit kyu in 3 weeks! - #3 Attacking invasion stones

Hi Everyone,

This is my last lecture for the "How to reach single digit kyu in 3 weeks" lecture series. I will talk about common double-digit kyu challenges in attacking invasion stones and will also covering critical opening/mid-game theory for you to reach single digit kyu!

I will be covering the follow topics:
-how to deal with invasion stones in a Sanrensei opening (and why invasion sucks)
    -3-3 invasion
-corner approach Sanrensei on the wrong side
-corner approach and then an immediate invasion (high and low invasions)
    -leaning attacks

I am sure that you all have seen such unreasonable invasions in a Sanrensei opening. Learning effective attacking moves and avoiding bad invasions will make you a much stronger player. After the lecture, hopefully you will become a single digit kyu in no time!

See you guys at 6:30pm tomorrow!

Regards,

Jonathan Cheng (Tygem 6dan)

Re: [ORE] Declaring order question

There is no standoff. Nobody acts until they all roll and see what Widths they get. Step 1) Declare intended actions. Step 2) Roll and see who succeeds and at what Width and Height. Step 3) Resolve actions in order of Width and Height.

Dear Members,

The Seattle Premiere of “The Surrounding Game” is coming soon, on July 31 at the Varsity Theatre,  4329 University Way NE, Seattle 98105.  THE SURROUNDING GAME is a full length documentary that follows the lives of three young Americans vying to become the first-ever Western professional Go players.  Visiting Japanese pro Maeda Ryo 6P, a longtime friend of U.S. Go players, will give a short greeting before the film.  This will be a fundraiser for the Seattle Go Center.  Ticket price is only $5 + service fee, but additional donations are welcomed…

The South Sound Go Club had an enthusiastic turnout for their presentation of the film last Monday night.  Tom Cruver gives a report here:

Doors open at the Varsity Theater at 7:00 on Monday, July 31, with Maeda Sensei at 7:15, and the film at 7:30.  Runtime is 97 minutes.  You can buy your tickets online for our premiere (and make a donation) at

[Seattle Go Center] Seattle AGA Meeting - TONIGHT!

Dear AGA Chapter members,

With the US Go Congress coming up, the Seattle AGA Chapter will have a short meeting this evening, Tuesday, July 18, at 7:00 p.m., at the Seattle Go Center.

This may surprise new members of the Go Center, but the AGA Chapter is a different organization from the Seattle Go Center. Many people belong to both organizations. In order to get a rating at the Go Center, you need to be a member of the American Go Association. We have a page that explains this in more detail:
http://www.seattlego.org/aga-chapter/

I, Peter Nelson, your Chapter Representative, will be polling members on various issues, including spending some of the Chapter's money on Go events and potential improvements for the Go Center itself. The meeting will be relatively informal and will likely last no more than 30 minutes (at most). Please join us if you are an AGA member.

Hope to see you tonight!
Peter

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: How to reach single digit kyu in 3 weeks! - #2 common life and death

Dear all,

I am Jonathan Cheng (Tygem 6dan) who will be giving my 2nd lecture this July for tomorrow's double-digit kyu class. I realize that many Go players find it challenging to figure out the life-and-death status of groups after invading the 3-3 point. For tomorrow's lecture I will be covering:

-corner L-shape and its variations (w/ a bend, 1st line hane, 1st line extension, etc...)
-3-3 invasion joseki life and death
-the "Pig's mouth" corner shape
-how to live after being double approached (star point)

After studying many double-digit kyu games, I have come to the conclusion that these are extremely common life-and-death scenarios when playing against fellow double-digit kyu players!

See you guys tomorrow at 6:30PM!

Regards,

Jonathan

Re: [ORE] Re: Regen question

Since the opposite effect (destroying hit locations) has its own Extra, Disintegrate, it seems reasonable to require an equivalent Extra on a Useful property to recreate a hit location, e.g. Regenerate +1.

Otherwise, recreating a destroyed hit location would be a separate Useful Quality from healing, IMO.

On Tue, Jul 4, 2017 at 8:47 AM, William Seaton <wsolf619@gmail.com> wrote:
I'd say that's more of a grey area. Which means it's at the discretion of the GM if it's possible with just the stock Regeneration power. They can decide that regenerating hit boxes is covered by how it's meant to function, they might do something similar to Mark D, force you to roll to regain the hitboxes, or, as you're asking, you need another Useful quality. Talk with who's running the game to see how they'd interpret it themselves.

If they decide you need another Useful quality though, here's one that should work:

(Regrow limbs) Useful Extras and Flaws: Permanent +4, Self Only -3, Slow -2
Effect: Allows you to regain missing hitboxes of a hit location of your choice every other round, thanks to the Permanent Extra. Take the Engulf Extra and drop the Slow Flaw if you want to recover hitboxes from multiple hit locations at once and to do so every round respectively.

[Seattle Go Center] Busy July With Lots of Volunteer Support

Dear Members,

We have had some big days at the Go Center this July, plus two outreach events this month. Thanks to all the volunteers
that made this possible!

We had 26 people at the ratings tournament on July 1, from 3 dan to 25 kyu. (The AGA will probably update their
ratings this Friday.) It is worth noting the 5 of the 10 players in the country with the most AGA tournaments played are
members of the Seattle Go Center. Thanks to our Tournament Directors, Dan Top and Bill Chiles, for the monthly ratings
tournaments that made this possible.

http://www.usgo.org/ratings

About 25 people came to our 4th of July afternoon BBQ. Chris Kirschner baked fresh rolls and buns, and many members
donated food for the potluck event.

This Tuesday, July 11, we had about 40 people play at the Go Center. The afternoon was busy, with 22 people playing
by 4:15. Our volunteer teachers were a big help, including John Richards, David Snow, Lee Anne Bowie, Aki Sato,
Nathan Saritzky, and Johnny Yoo.

At the Japan Fair last weekend, Cat Mai and Rodney Strong taught one day, and John Richards and David Snow the next.

At Bon Odori this coming weekend, July 15 -16, we have Aki Sato, David Snow, Bert Ortiz, Peter Kron and Cat Mai lined
up. We probably will have room for another teacher on Saturday, since they give us two tables.

The schedule is here:
http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Looking ahead, our evening classes continue in July; then we take a break In August. Jonathan Cheng is teaching the
Monday DDk class, which starts at 6:30. We had about 10 students last week. Peter Nelson will be teaching two more
SDK classes, on Wednesdays, July 19 and 26. Peter will be teaching less next year, so catch him while you can!

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Tomorrow - Capturing Races!

Hi all,

Though I'm busy tomorrow and can't make it to class, the SDK class will indeed still meet! Brian Kirby graciously volunteered to be our host and has prepared a lecture on capturing races - see below for a quick description of his intended material.

Peter Nelson

---

Hi, Go players!

I'll be your host for Wednesday's SDK class. The theme for the night will be capturing races. We'll start with some problems, and then dive into some strategies to quickly assess the status of capturing races of various flavors, including:
- Eye vs. no eye
- Big eye vs. big eye
- Big eye vs. smaller eye
- Capturing races involving ko

Hopefully, Wednesday's lecture will bring you a newfound confidence when you encounter capturing races in your own games.

As usual, there will be time at the end for game reviews. Feel free to email me the game record ahead of time (kirbyb@umich.edu) or just bring it to class.

See you on Wednesday at 7pm!

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: How to reach single digit kyu in 3 weeks! - #1 game changing tesuji

Hi Everyone,

I am Jonathan Cheng (Tygem 6dan) who will be giving 3 lectures this July for the double-digit kyu class. I realize that many Go players find it challenging to reach single digit kyu after many years of playing Go, and therefore I have prepared this short lecture series to help you quickly advance your skills.

For tomorrow's lecture I will be covering:
-double/quadruple hane
-2nd line connection
-2nd line large knights attack
-2-space extension attack

After studying many double-digit kyu games, I have come to the conclusion that these are extremely effective tesuji when playing against fellow double-digit kyu players!

See you guys at 6:30PM!

[Seattle Go Center] We still need one more volunteer for tomorrow, Sat July 8

Dear Members,

We still need to fill one more spot at the Japan Fair this Saturday July 8 at the Meydenbauer Center, 11100 NE 6th St,

Bellevue, WA 98004, USA.   This is from 10 am to 6 pm, but of course it can done by several volunteers taking different

shifts.  We have Sunday covered by David Snow and John Richards.

At our outreach events, we teach capture Go to visitors, and tell people about the Go Center and other ways they can play and learn the game of Go.  If there is room and time, we may also play some friendly games of Go.

The Japan Fair is both Saturday and Sunday.  It will be the largest Japanese Cultural Fair on the Eastside this year.  Come check it out!

[ORE] Direct Feed Question

Hi, simple question regarding Direct Feed. It's stated in it's description that you lose width in Willpower points each time you use the quality with the Flaw. That's easy to understand. I'm curious what happens if you don't succeed in activating the quality, do you lose 1 Willpower? Or is it like Willpower Cost in that if you fail to activate it you do not spend the Willpower?

Bellevue, WA 98004, USA. This is from 10 am to 6 pm, but of course it can done by several volunteers taking different

teachers at the same time. We have our teachers already scheduled for Sunday at the Japan Fair.

Please contact me if you can help on Saturday, July 8 at the Japan Fair.

The next weekend, at Bon Odori, we have a core of teachers already scheduled. But we have more room at this fair, so
more teachers are welcome. Our hours are 4-9 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, and 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, July 16.

[Seattle Go Center] Potluck BBQ July 4 afternoon, open noon - nine pm

Dear Go Players,

The Go Center will be open this Tuesday, July 4, and we will have a charcoal barbecue ready for grilling from 1 – 4 p.m.  Chris K  will be baking hamburger buns and hot dog rolls.  Feel free to bring items to grill, and potluck food to share.  Of course, we will be playing a lot of Go as well.

We will be open from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.  Please note that the Lake Union fireworks show will bring a lot of traffic to our area in the evening.

Cheers,

Brian
