Re: [ORE] [WT]Help with a Power Focus Character

Alright, thanks for the help. Reason I was asking was that actually if I continued on the logic that the powers needed to have the Focus flaw on it, then they would also need the Extras and Flaws of the Focus(Irreplaceable, Indestructible, Accessible, etc etc). Since the original focus in question had Indestructible, the overall effect on the powers would actually be them costing an extra 1 point/die.

On Wednesday, 23 September 2015 16:15:43 UTC+1, Daniel M. Kane wrote:
For simplicity, I'd leave Focus off everything except maaaaybe the weapon(s), if they can be lent, disarmed, or stolen.  In-genre the powers and suit are more of an alternate form than power armor.

Game-wise, if stealing the focus turns off the transformation, and turning off the transformation disables all the other powers, taking the item as a Focus on all the other powers would have no actual effect, therefore is worth no points.

Howdy,

I've got a player that essentially wants to make a Power Ranger/Super Sentai. In short, they have an item that let's them transform, and all the powers are attached to that item and require them to be in that form. The first part I can do, it's essentially building a focus with a simple Useful quality. The second part I know somewhat, stick the Attached flaw to any hyperstats, hyperskills, or miracles the player wants, tying the powers to the original Transform built into the focus. Where I'm getting confused is if that's all I need to do, or would I need to stick the Focus flaw on them too, since they're meant to be tied to it?

Re: [ORE]BLEEDING OUT?

"Any would" should be "Any wound". Stupid spell check...

  • Slashing damage bleeds for 1 point of Shock to the torso every two combat rounds.
  • Area effect damage and blunt force damage bleed for 1 point of Shock to the torso every minute.
  • The bleeding continues until the torso eventually fills with Killing damage, at which point the character dies, as normal. (Of course, if a character's torso fills with Shock damage, they pass out.)
  • A successful First Aid or Medicine roll stops the bleeding. If a First Aid or Medicine roll was unable to stop the bleeding, it can be attempted again, but add 1 to the Difficulty. Every failed roll results in adding 1 to the Difficulty.
Using those rules, assuming the throwing knife did 6 points of Killing damage to the torso and assuming no one tried to treat the target, the target would pass out from blood loss in four combat rounds and die in eight combat rounds.

There is also this excellent free Godlike supplement, http://www.rpgnow.com/product/91022/GODLIKE-HighRealism-Combat-Options.  It has crit rules that could be used for Wild Talents also.

Perhaps the target can save using endurance.

RE: [ORE][WILD TALENTS ] How would you handle animorphs?

I wouldn't say more than a few rounds at most and maybe a couple out of combats turns. Though as they got better and more harden to the "grossness" it was quicker even mid free fall.

RE: [ORE][WILD TALENTS ] How would you handle animorphs?

If I recall correctly, it was often a time-consuming process that needed much concentration. Though it was clear from the books that it came easier to some people than others.

I loved that series. I started reading them to my baby brothers when they were small, and finished it myself. I was impressed with the ending.

If they can transform instantly without a declared action, give it Permanent.  For claw attacks, especially many very fast ones, use the Variable Effect Attacks for A: Killing Only -1, Spray +2, Touch -2 for a melee Killing attack that suffers no multiple action penalties (and gets 2 bonus dice!)

Tack Permanent onto the Variable Effect to roll it without a declared action, of course.

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] If the Japanese have so many fewer Talents...

I agree that the Talent arms race in Europe is going to be a vastly more important place to send Talents than the outcome-already-clear Pacific Theater, either way.

This is what drew out the pacific campaign and Talant's don't do a lot to change it.
Further the stress of a fanatical to the last man defense or kamikaze attack looks like the sort of thing to bring out talant's more than the Americans are experiencing on the other side. This means that the Japanese will often have spontaneous talant's manifesting and then getting killed before training which still forces American talant's to be careful.

In the mainland fighting in Burma etc the overwhelming problem effecting the commonwealth troops was logistics and the terrible terrain , talant's do little to change that.

Then there is the emphasis on Europe and the threat of Nazi Ubermenchen which probably draws the majority of talant's to Europe.

The average TOG squad has to worry about Ubermenschen all over Europe- what does a Marine squad need to worry about Talent-wise? A few guys that don't know how to use their abilties and are shunned by their own people?

Surely the Japanese lack of Talents is noticed and known in-game so American Talents could be a little freer to use their abilities, yet this doesn't seem to have much of an impact.

Re: [ORE] [Godlike] If the Japanese have so many fewer Talents...

The other factor I considered was how many fewer talants do the Japanese have, if the ration is of the order of 6 or 7 to 1 it is about the same ration as in conventional forces and so maintains the balace.
Also given that on a straight historical basis the Americans win with no doubts the wild card of talants can only help the Japanese. If we take the example of the german talent in sicily who can sink ships by looking at them if you add him to the 7th fleet at Phillipines sea the result is pretty much the same, if you add him to the combined fleet and he manages to take out a couple of fleet carriers that probably delays the American advance by several months as they replace them. Likewise a kamkiaze pilot who develops the ability to make his plane invulnerable does a lot more harm to the Americans than a Hellcat pilot who cannot be shot down does to the Japanese.

I presume talants are reasonably well used by the USMC but in the island campaigns there is no room for maneuver or flexibility everywhere is in the enemies killing ground and you just have to hammer straight in, even there the Americans normally killed abou 3 Japanese for every dead American and only at Iwo Jima did their total casualties exceed the Japanese dead

Overall the ETO is probably better for a prolonged campaign although Americans in the Phliipines during the Japanese conquest could be interesting , or for a one off newly created American talants at Wake Island

This is my take as well. There are plenty of Japanese Talents manifesting all over the Pacific Theater, but the few that survive get labeled as Gaki, or monsters. The multitude that die gloriously in battle following manifestation are seen as Nikudan ("human bullets") or Gun-shin ("War Gods"), patriotic heroes empowered by kokutai (national spirit) to achieve great acts and turn back the West and its inhuman Talent monstrosities. There are also Goldberg Scientists that the Japanese military may not even recognize as Talents. And while the Japanese may not (openly) organize native-born Talents into units, they could do so among other populations of occupied and allied nations (Korea, China, Indochina, Indonesia, etc).

The flipside of this is the assumption that the Marines use their Talents as effectively as the Army does in the ETO. Considering the massive waste of life for not-always clear objectives in the island-hopping campaign, it's very possible that Marine SIS squads are ineffectually deployed in battle by the kind of generals that look at a flamethrower and wonder where the bayonet lug is.

Surely the Japanese lack of Talents is noticed and known in-game so American Talents could be a little freer to use their abilities, yet this doesn't seem to have much of an impact.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: "The Pincer and The Punishment (Part 1)"

(alternate title: "Don't fear the pincer!")

Holy pants Batman! A brand new DDK class!

That's right everyone. It's on. Double-Digit Kyu Class continues tomorrow, Monday the 28th, with me, Cullen Mott, substituting for Nick Sibicky. Like always, class will begin with a brief review, followed by a lecture, and then I will be doing game reviews for whomever is interested. Bring in a game! If you don't have one you'd like reviewed it's no problem, still come. I'll have my computer this time so if you'd rather email me your game record instead of bringing it in on an iPad or a laptop that'll work just fine.

This week's lecture is on how to play when your opponent pincers you, how to fight back, and how to punish if the pincer is a mistake.

Looking forward to seeing you all!

So if I wanted to alternate form add some claw attacks, move around some attributes like body six cause i'm a grizzly now throw on some extra tough all in one turn.

[Seattle Go Center] John Stanford Go Club still has room

Dear Members,

The Go club at the local elementary school, the John Stanford International School (JSIS), still has room for more students.  The club at neighboring McDonald International is full.  Both clubs will be meeting on Thursdays, after school.  They will play each other in some friendly games later this fall.

If you know students at JSIS, please remind them of this fun opportunity to learn the game of Go while they are young.  Learning Go is like learning a language – there are huge advantages to starting young.  Dan Top, one of our most experienced teachers, will be running the club.

Parents can register their students by going to this page:

http://www.seattlego.org/youth-go/jsis/

Registration will close late on Monday, Sept 28.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] This Sunday: Strong Players' Study Group!

Hi all,

This Sunday, September 27th, from 1pm - 5pm, will mark the first meeting of the Strong Players' Study Group at the Seattle Go Center. This group will be focused on dan-level players who are working to improve their game through collaboration with other similarly-motivated individuals.

During Kim Myungwan 9P's workshop here in August, he emphasized three essential ways to improving one's go skills:

1. Play many games against strong opponents
2. Study life and death seriously
3. Discuss & share ideas with other go players

In this new study group, we will focus on these three ideas in pursuit of the divine move. I don't have a specific plan/curriculum in mind; my hope is that we can bring our own games/problems to the study group and enjoy the benefit of having another set of eyes give feedback and advice. Of course, we will also play games, but with an emphasis on sharing ideas and reviewing together after the game is over. We may work through a rigorous course of life & death problems if there is enough interest.

In summary: if you consider yourself dan-level or dangerously close to dan-level, get in the habit of coming to the go center on Sunday afternoons. Together, everyone achieves more!

Note - the plan is to meet every Sunday afternoon, except during special events, such as tournaments & Kuma sensei lectures, so we won't meet on Sunday, October 4th.

Cheers!
Peter Nelson 5D

[Seattle Go Center] Eastside Teacher needed

Dear Go Teachers,

We are looking for a Go teacher and an assistant teacher for a Kirkland middle school.  This class will be during the school day on Wednesdays on October 28; November 4, 18;  and December 2, 9, 16.  (No classes on Veteran’s day, or during Thanksgiving Week.)   The Go class will be one of several electives offered to students at the same time, so you will have students who chose your class.  Classes are typically 60 minutes or 90 minutes (we can choose), and they run anytime between 10:45 – 12:45.  This can be a volunteer position or a paid position.

If you are interested, please contact me.

[Seattle Go Center] Brian teaching Beginner's Night - Sept 24

Dear Members,

I will be teaching the Beginners Night, today Thursday, Sept 24, starting at 6:30.  I think face to face instruction is particularly helpful when beginners are trying to finish a game, so perhaps I can help folks with that.  I will also be available to answer questions about our library,  and our book and equipment sales.

Cheers,

I wasn't sure if they could transform into any animal they've touched, the last one they touched, or just one they're touching at a given moment.

If powers tire someone out, that sounds like a use for Willpower-related Flaws!

Thanks. A lot of good stuff there. With attached and duration wouldn't the change only happen when they touch animal. In books it's more of a get the DNA and the can change in a copy of that anytime.

Re: [ORE] [WT]Help with a Power Focus Character

For simplicity, I'd leave Focus off everything except maaaaybe the weapon(s), if they can be lent, disarmed, or stolen.  In-genre the powers and suit are more of an alternate form than power armor.

Game-wise, if stealing the focus turns off the transformation, and turning off the transformation disables all the other powers, taking the item as a Focus on all the other powers would have no actual effect, therefore is worth no points.

[Seattle Go Center] SDK class Wednesday: problems, and how to stretch for a little bit more

Hey folks!

the single-digit-kyu classes will continue tonight with another set of problems, plus a chance to review the ones from last week.  As usual, the problems will be available here: goo.gl/kAJVmh -- tonight we will be reviewing week 3's problems, and after tomorrow, week 4's problems will be available at the same location.  They'll also be available to pick up at the go center tonight!

We're going to also talk about how reading can help us stretch and go for a little bit more, and how hastiness or inattention can be all it takes to miss a great opportunity.

Hope to see you there!  Wednesday, 7-9pm, Seattle Go Center!
-andrew

(P.S. If you have any questions or problems obtaining the homework, don't hesitate to ask!)

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class TONIGHT: Andrew Jackson is AMAZING at Go!

Hey Everyone-

Tonight, my DDK class welcomes the esteemed Andrew Jackson for another one of our sparring matches. These are games where we interact with the audience and explain what we are thinking, and often debate the merits of our moves with each other. These sessions are usually pretty entertaining to watch, and the last time we did this has received over 6,000 views on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C0uQ2AYKHI).

Anyway, I hope to see you there for our EPIC game!

[ORE][WILD TALENTS ] How would you handle animorphs?

I'm brainstorming how to run a game for this as a alternate set of kids set up in nearby town like the auxiliary animorphs. So probably need a mother archetype, useful to stun and absorb DNA a variable effect to do alternate forms using said DNA. Anyone wanna throw some good starting points at me or even build a sample power/character lol. Anything would be awesome, thanks.

[Seattle Go Center] JSIS Go Club Registration Begins

Dear Members,

Registration for the Go Club at John Stanford International School, our local public grade school, has started.  The club will meet on Thursday afternoons, as part of the After School Activities (ASA).  Dan Top will be returning as the lead teacher, and the assistant teacher will be Joshua Clark, who used to coach youth soccer.

For more information, and to sign JSIS students up, please go to our webpage for the club:

http://www.seattlego.org/youth-go/jsis/

There will also be a Thursday club at the nearby McDonald International School, another public grade school.  Ben Resnick and I will be returning as the teachers for this group. The two clubs will visit each other this Fall.  Registration for the McDonald club will begin this Sunday, September 20, at 7:00 p.m., at this link:

http://www.seattlego.org/youth-go/mcd/

If you know families who have children at these schools, please remind them of this great opportunity.

Cheers,

Brian
