[Seattle Go Center] Proofread pls? Congress; Ratings Tourn.; Hiroshima Commemoration; Basics Class

Hi Brian, proofread the Hiroshima part, if you don't mind -- I'm nervous about inadvertent offenses.
Thanks,
Mike M.

Hello Go people,

A few things to mention.

US Go Congress is over.
Some players at the Go Congress, students of Jonathan Cheng, had admirable records in the US Open. Cat Mai won all six of her games, and Nick Wilmes won five and lost one.

Ratings tournament Sunday.
Sunday Aug. 5 is the first Sunday of the month, so it's time to TOURNEY! Registration 10 AM - 10:45; first round 11 AM. Three rounds total (but you don't have to play all rounds -- just inform the TD of your plans). No cost (usual Go Center membership applies -- http://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details), but AGA membership is required (see http://www.usgo.org/join-aga-today for details). Come hone your skills with us! http://www.seattlego.org/events/

Hiroshima commemoration Monday.
August 6, 1945, the founder of the Go Center, Iwamoto Kaoru 9-Dan, was playing in the Honinbo tournament near Hiroshima. The experience of surviving the nuclear attack helped inspire Iwamoto-sensei's vision of increasing peace and cross-cultural understanding via Go. On Monday, August 6, Go Center volunteers will replay the "Atomic Bomb" game at Green Lake, starting at 5 PM, prior to the "Hiroshima to Hope" commemoration. We will be on the grass near the Green Lake Trail: https://goo.gl/maps/e1R5SUE5FFn

Go Basics class Monday.
Also on Monday, August 6, the Go Center will be open 5 PM - 9 PM. Starting at 6:30, Drew Barnett will continue his series of classes on the basics of Go, aimed to help double-digit kyu players gain a firmer understanding.

See you at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] No Internet on Tuesday at Go Center

Dear Go Players,

We will not have wifi Internet service at the Go Center on Tuesday.   This may be a good thing; you can play Go with fewer distractions in air conditioned comfort.  We close at 10 p.m. The repair person is coming on Wed afternoon.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Bagelday

Hello Go folks,

The Go Center will be open today, starting about 1:15. Our resident baker, Chris K., is at the Go Congress, so we'll have
bagels instead of freshly baked bread.

If you watch the AGA live streams on YouTube and Twitch, you'll see occasional glimpses of Seattle folks at the Congress.
Nick Sibicky even took a minute out of his game to show the main playing hall, filled with Go players -- something to see!

[Seattle Go Center] Weakly Kibitzer (Bon Odori; Shogi; reg. hours next week; etc.)

Hi Go folks,

Several things to mention; I'll try to be brief.

Tuesday at the Go Center
It's our biggest night, and I still claim "Largest Weekly Gathering of Go Players in the Western Hemisphere". We open at 1 PM, and close at 10 PM. Free casual instruction for beginners starting at 3 PM. No registration needed; just ask at the front desk. Chris has the dough rising for freshly baked bread, and if enough players request it, we'll order pizza to share. Last week we broke the 25 streak, and had 30 players!

Wednesday -- last Advanced Go session
Zhang Yue's class for SDK players, up through 6 dan, will have its 8th and final session tomorrow at 7 PM. You still can join in for $35. (I don't know what topic Yue will cover -- I expect that he'll make an announcement soon.)

Thursday -- Complete Beginners class
The Go Center will open at 2 PM for casual play. Larry Eclipse teaches "complete beginners", free of charge, beginning at 6:30. No registration is required.

Saturday and Sunday -- Bon Odori
Bon Odori is at Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple, 1427 S. Main St., in the temple gym (https://goo.gl/maps/s9cwLKvXpcU2). Parking is likely to be difficult, because the event is very popular. The Go Center will have an outreach table, 4-9 PM on Saturday and 3-8 PM on Sunday. We're well covered for volunteers Saturday; we need 2 or 3 more for Sunday.

Saturday -- Shogi at the Go Center
Brandon and Catherine will host a Shogi meet-up, 1 PM - 5 PM. Free instruction for beginners. Our usual usage / membership policies apply (see http://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details). If you're curious about this Japanese form of Chess, come check it out!

Next Week
Many folks will be at the Go Congress in Virginia next week (tenuki strong!). The Go Center will have normal hours (including Drew's new DDK class on Mondays at 6:30 PM).

To Infinity and Beyond
Sun. Aug. 5 -- Monthly Ratings Tournament
Mon. Aug. 6 -- Hiroshima remembrance at Green Lake (we will replay the Atomic Bomb game)
Sat. Aug. 11 -- Speed League! New monthly event; watch for details

There's more, of course, but I already broke my promise to play lightly.

See you at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

[Seattle Go Center] Tomorrow's Advanced Go Class

Hi Advanced Goers,

For tomorrow's class, besides AlphaGo's games, we'll also look at a game between two top AI programs, played yesterday. The game is very interesting, and it reflected a lot of stuff we have discussed recently. For the practice part, we'll continue the exciting "fight".

See you folks tomorrow. (Oh, did I forget to mention it's also a nice escape from the heat?)

Cheers,
Yue

Review

Yang Yi simuls
Saturday July 7, Seattle Go Center was delighted to have a visit from Mr. Yang Yi, 6 Dan professional from Chinese Weiqi Association! He engaged six players simultaneously. By all accounts, it was a wonderful and successful event.

Outreach
It was a wild week of outreach for our favorite game. Hopefully, over time the result will be more people for us to play! Sunday July 1, we introduced Go to dozens of basketball-loving kids and families at the Seattle Storm game at Key Arena. Big thanks to Melanie Clemenz, Yulissa Wu, Lucas Wu, Kate Dorsett, and Brian Willis! Then at Japan Fair in Bellevue, Sat. July 7 and Sun. July 8, we introduced Go to dozens of Japanese culture fans. We also met players who knew about the Go Center already, but rarely find time to stop in. The Hikaru no Go decorations Dave Snow brought attracted attention from folks who read / watched HnG years ago, and are learning to play at last. Thanks much to Dave Snow, Ned Beebe, Peter Kron, Kyle Burg, Frank Fukuda, Connie Hayashi, and Michelle Zimmerman! (And thanks to the player who taught several folks Sunday afternoon, who reads these emails, but whose name escaped my memory like someone who doesn't want their over-inflated IGS rating punctured. It was fun, and I hope you make it to the Go Center soon!)

Thanks!
Thanks for all your help, encouragement, and kind welcoming words over the past seven weeks. With your continued support, I'm sure that we can increase general familiarity with our game, and increase the number of players in our community!

Tonight we'll have our 5th class. For the lecture part we'll continue studying AlphaGo's games.  For the practice part, we'll emphasize on the post-opening towards middle game. We'll discuss the timing and judgement of initiating a fight, along with other topics.

See you soon.

[Seattle Go Center] Mr. Yang 6P simuls; Japan Fair

Greetings, fellow Go fans!

It's going to be a busy weekend for Go.  Today the Go Center is open for casual play, 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM; and for a special treat, Mr. Yang Yi, 6 Dan professional from Chinese Weiqi Association, has agreed to play up to six simultaneous games!  There is no charge for this (beyond the usual Go Center membership / day fee).  Six players have signed up, including Yue Zhang, so it should be an awesome demonstration!  Mr. Yang will begin about 2:00 PM.

Also, Japan Fair is happening at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue (Saturday, 10 AM - 6 PM; Sunday, 10 AM - 5 PM).  We will have a booth there, so stop by to say "hi" and maybe help introduce Go to new players.  Admission is free, and there are many exhibits and demonstrations to see.

[ORE] Using Willpower to temporarily buy off power flaws?

Hi all,

Just getting into a Cold War Wild Talents game after a year long hiatus from Progenitor and I have a question?

I seem to remember something about being able to temporarily ignore a power flaw by spending willpower but I can seem to find where I've seen it or if I'm making it up.

Does anyone know if this is a thing and if not, how would you go about it. Player wants a slow acting power (Delayed Effect) that can be pushed to speed it up.

Thanks in advance.

[Seattle Go Center] Weekly Kibitzer (Simuls, Japan Fair, etc.)

Hello Go Enthusiasts!

Mr. Yang Simuls Saturday
Sorry, I didn't mention the sign-up sheet for Mr. Yang's visit on Saturday, July 7. It is on the welcome desk, around the corner from the daily sign-in sheet. I think that this will be a popular event, based on the inquirires I've received! (For those who missed the announcement -- Yang Yi, 6 Dan Professional from Chinese Weiqi Association, is planning to visit Seattle Go Center around 2 PM, and has agreed to play simultaneously against up to six players! There is no charge for this, other than the usual membership / day use / 10-visits card; but you probably should sign up in advance.)

Outreach Saturday and Sunday
Japan Fair will be at Meydenbauer Center on Saturday July 7 and Sunday July 8. Admission is free! See http://www.japanfairus.org/ for details about scheduled events, parking, etc. The Go Center will have an outreach booth there, and I encourage you to help us introduce the game to interested passers by. We have five people who will help, and we could really use a few more.

Wednesday -- No Advanced Go Class
Happy Independence Day! Remember to stay safe out there. Next class will be Sunday, July 8.

Tuesday (Today)
Once again, it's time for the largest weekly gathering of Go players in the Western Hemisphere! (If those folks in São Paulo want to dispute this, then we'll settle it across the board! Or maybe on KGS.) The Go Center will be open 1 PM - 10 PM, and we gratefully expect Chris to bake a bunch of bread. See you there!

Special Thanks
This past Sunday, we had an outreach table at Key Arena for the Seattle Storm WNBA game -- not our usual sort of venue, but there was a "Japan Night" tie-in. (Time will tell whether it was a tesuji or a blunder.) We did talk to lots of people, so maybe there will be some new faces at the Go Center soon. Big thanks to Yulissa, Lucas, Melanie, Kate, and Brian! It would have been impossible without you, and you made it awesome fun!

I Know I'm Forgetting Something
Someone asked me to make an announcement. Did I write it down? Nooooo, that would be too easy. Grumble grumble. So I apologize in advance, because I'm pretty sure I'll be sending a follow-up email. Such gote.

Thanks for supporting the Go Center! See you there,

Looks pretty cool.
I'll play around with it some more.

[ORE] Duplication question

I want to make a Duplication power, like I am holding a diamond then I am holding two diamonds. Or I'm holding a comic book then I am holding two comic books.

Duplicate (4)
Qualities: U
Extras/Flaws: Permanent +4, Only works on non-living targets -1, Can't be more powerful than the original object -1.
Capacity: Mass
Effect: You can make a duplicate of an object you are holding.

If you make a duplicate of a knife or gun it can't be more powerful than the original, nor have more bullets. If it's an empty gun, then you get a duplicated empty gun.

Does this look reasonable?

Thanks,
Matt

[Seattle Go Center] Yang Yi 6P, Sat. 7-7

Hello Go fans,

The monthly ratings tournament is today -- registration is 10:00 - 10:45 AM, and the first round starts at 11:00, so come play with us!  More details on our events calendar:  http://www.seattlego.org/events/

After the tournament -- Yue Zhang's "Advanced Go" class, 7:00 PM, for single-digit kyu and dan players up to 6d.  This will be the 4th session of 8, and there's still time to join the class.  More info:  http://www.seattlego.org/2018/06/15/advanced-go-class/

You might have known about those items already, but this one is new!  Yang Yi, 6-dan professional and Vice Chairman of Chinese Weiqi Association (CWA), is visiting Seattle.  Saturday, July 7, he is planning to come to the Go Center, and has agreed to play some simuls!  I think he will start around 2 PM, and will engage up to six players.  There is no charge for this, other than the usual membership / day use / 10-visits card.  (Have I mentioned recently how fortunate we are at the Go Center?)
To see the games of Mr. Yang:  http://ps.waltheri.net/database/player/Yang%20Yi/

See you at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

email: programs@SeattleGo.org
web: www.SeattleGo.org
Go Center phone: 206-545-1424

PS - A Go player showed up late for class, and the teacher asked why.  "I kept hitting the snooze button, because I was dreaming that I was in byo-yomi."

(Help!  Need more Go jokes!)
