[Seattle Go Center] Re: FEB Tournament Announcement

Hey, all.  07 FEB I will mail out the first round pairings for our three week, one round per week tournament.

We have 12 participants so far.  I'd like to encourage more people to join in the 10k or lower range as well as more 1k and higher so that we can have more pairings with low or no handicap.  If we get an odd number, the last person to email may be left out, or I may include them after round 1 if others are willing to bye for one round to get better pairings.

Cheers,
Bill

Subject: FEB Tournament Announcement

Hey, everyone.  The survey results were very clear.  People would prefer one game a week over three weeks.  There is also a leaning toward playing on OGS it seems, but I will leave it to opponents to decide when and how to play (if you need help getting familiar with KGS or OGS, we can help).  We will learn from this trail tournament and see how to change it if needed to keep it interesting for people (trying other formats, perhaps offering parings every week, or a leaderboard, or we don't know yet ðŸ™‚).

We cannot submit a report to the AGA for ranking as we usually do with the monthly ratings because the AGA does not support ranking based on online games.  Therefore, if your AGA membership has lapsed, it is ok.  On the upside, you can have a thoughtful game (no online pressure to play super fast) that may be good for reviewing or learning from.

If you would like to participate, please reply to me (billchiles-gocenter@hotmail.com) with your name, the rank you would like to play at, and if you are under 18 yrs old.  Sunday night, 07 FEB, I will send out pairings to the participants, and you will have until Sun the next week to play your games.  Then please email me the result, and CC your opponent.  I'll email out results of the prior week when I sent out the pairings for the next week, and I will send the final results after the three week tournament is done.

The default time controls for a game are 45 min main with 5x30s byouyomi.  You may ask your opponent to play with a different time control, but your opponent can stick with the default.  This is our usual monthly ratings tournament time control.

The tournament is a handicapped tournament.  If there are outlying ranked participants, and I cannot pair you due to no one being within 9 stones that you have not played previously in the tournament, then I will notify you that I cannot pair you.  If it happens that we have an odd number of people, then I will ask someone to bye for a round, and if there are no volunteers, I will pick someone as best I can.  If there is an odd number of people who sign up, then the last person to send email that they want to participate will have to wait for next time.

You can use the SGC Discord chat room to chit chat while playing or discuss your games, or chat boxes in OGS and KGS, or however you agree with your opponent.

If you are under 18 yrs old, we need you to CC your parent when you sign up, and the parent needs to agree to a consent form.  As are the rules for SGC, children need to be supervised by parents or someone the parents asked to be responsible to watch out for the kids.

PLEASE consider participating.  We hope this can be fun and get you playing more Go.  It might be that we can recruit a strong player on a Tue evening to pick a tournament game and review it.

Cheers,

Bill

[Seattle Go Center] The return of AI study group & some Discord announcements

Hey there Go players!

First off, I'd like to invite everyone to join the SGC Discord server if you haven't joined already:

We've recently made some improvements, with more to come, and we welcome anyone who is looking for more Go content or players to connect with. Even if you're not interested in the below topics (for which the Discord server will be the most direct conduit for ongoing information), we encourage you to join if you are looking to connect with other SGC community members in a more fluid and open format than our weekly Zoom hangouts.

With that said, I'm now happy to announce the return of the Go AI study group! Obviously, we'll be doing things online this time, utilizing a combination of Discord and Twitch. For those not already in the know, I got started with streaming on Twitch a couple months ago and have been streaming Go games on Tuesdays during our weekly hangout:

Starting on Feb 6th, I will now be streaming regularly on Saturday evenings as well from 6:30-8:30p, as I do my best to conduct the AI study sessions from the Discord server. My intent is to replicate the format we used before as best as possible, with 30-45 minutes of lecturing a topic or showcasing code, and then 1-1.5 hours of Q&A, troubleshooting, and open discussion. Again, if you'd like to participate you are encouraged to join the Discord server and check the ai-programming channel for further updates (such as: there will be a dry run this Saturday, where I'll be ham-fistedly working through making sure I'm as organized and set up for this as I think I am, but I won't be doing the opening lecture I have planned for the 6th).

I will briefly emphasize that high-powered computing resources are certainly helpful, but by no means required to participate. Much of the code in our repository can be run on a commercial-grade laptop, and there are many free and/or cheap computing resources on the internet that you can tap into later, if it comes to that. Please don't let hardware hold you back!

With regards to the Discord server, please contact me or either SGC manager with any feedback you have on the server layout, bot integration, or anything else; we're happy to hear about what works well for people and what they want to get out of our server. Also we have some Steam keys for the new game Conquest of Go, which we have been and will be distributing through the Discord, so please see the announcements channel if you're interested in getting your hands on one of those keys. Lastly, I'd like to quickly solicit volunteers from the community for hosting our weekly hangouts in the Discord; by "hosting", all I mean is hanging out in one of the voice channels and welcoming and helping to orient newcomers to the server. If that sounds like something you'd be willing to donate a few hours a week to, please little r me on this email or DM me on Discord.

I think that covers everything, hopefully. Don't hesitate to hit me with questions if you have any, and I hope to see you all online soon!

-Drew

[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Go Center Tournaments ?

Hello,  Seattle Go Center community.  We've been trying to keep SGC engaged to the extent we can while closed for COVID.  Please do try out our Tue evening zoom meeting and game breakouts.  There's a regular group of people every week, with different people popping in sometimes.

I want to find out about interest in tournaments.  We cannot have an official monthly ratings tournament due to AGA policies for online games, but we could have a tournament just for fun and getting in some more games.  I'd be happy to run some tournaments if there is enough interest.  We could maintain a leaderboard across all our unofficial tournaments and make up some bands/categories for bragging rights if that were appealing.

Please take the following survey to let us know which format of tournament you would prefer and whether you are interested.  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/YF783Q6

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] It's Tuesday Game Night at 6:30!

Last week we had a nice visit from a longtime Go Center member who moved away from Seattle 2012.   He played in both rounds of games, and won one.

[Seattle Go Center] Continuing the Tuesday Tradition

Dear Members,

Tomorrow is Tuesday, the Go Center game night, starting at 6:30 pm PST, with this link:

Join Zoom Meeting

https://zoom.us/j/99377436701

We will be using this link through the end of January 2021.

Last week we had a young member player join us – he used to come to the Go Center.  His mom was watching in the background.  This is a great way to set things up, since we can’t keep our young players from wandering off to some other part of the Internet.  But this player did fine, kept playing, and came close to beating me with only a two stone handicap.

Things get rolling at 6:30 p.m., but it’s OK to drop in later.  When you click the link, you will be sent to the waiting room.  Mike or I will let you in.  There is no passcode.
