[Seattle Go Center] We welcome year end donations!

Dear Members,

The generous gift of Iwamoto Sensei established the Seattle Go Center in 1995, but it is our responsibility as members to keep it running, and to share our wonderful game.  We do this with a combination of volunteer effort, gifts of books and equipment, and monetary donations.

In the fiscal year ending in June of 2018, I counted 55 volunteers.  They included most of our class teachers, the many people who taught during open times, outreach volunteers, the people who host and organize meet-ups at other locations, all our tournament directors, the hosts and guides for visiting pros, and the volunteers who take on building maintenance projects.  Thanks to them all!

Last year we received books and go equipment worth about $5000.  This allowed us to expand our reference library, especially with Japanese books.  Our lending library doubled in size, mostly with books in English.  We had nice book and equipment prizes for the youth tournaments, and two of the regular tournaments.  We also loan equipment to school clubs and local meet-ups.

Monetary donations are also an important part of our budget.  As usual, we plan on getting more from donations than from memberships.  Please consider supporting the Go Center financially.  Your donation is tax deductible if you itemize your deductions.  There are also matching donations available from some employers, such as Microsoft.  (If you are looking us up on a list of approved charities, look for us under our formal name: the “Nihon Ki-in Go Institute of the West”.   Our Federal EIN is 91-1653-572)

Donations can be made through our Donation Page.  Look for the Paypal button on the bottom of the page.

https://www.seattlego.org/donate/

We also accept cash donations and checks at the Go Center.  And on Tuesdays and Saturdays, we can take credit cards.

Have a Happy New Year!  We hope to see you soon.

Sincerely,

Brian Allen

Greetings Go Fans!
Tomorrow will be our last double-digit Go class of the year! And as an extra-special topic, I want to talk about the BEST Go YouTube channel on the internet....which of course is Dwyrin! [Seattle Go Center] Closed Wed. reminder; corrxn + apology; seeking volunteer

Greetings Go fans,

Closed Wednesdays
Quick reminder that Seattle Go Center is closed today, and closed on Wednesdays until mid-January. But fear not -- you can satisfy your face-to-face Go desire at Uwajimaya, 600 5th Av. S., 98104. Dennis Wheeler sets up a Go table in Uwajimaya food court, 6 PM - 8 PM. Instruction available for beginners.

Correction and apology
In a recent email, I said that Eric Barnes will be leading a series of computer AI Go programming sessions on Wednesdays, beginning mid-January. I'm so sorry, Eric Downes! Some days I'm nomenclaturally challenged, and I apologize.

Seeking volunteer
Speaking of Dennis at Uwajimaya on Wednesdays, and Eric Downes leading a series of Go programming sessions on Wednesdays -- We're seeking a volunteer to take over hosting our Wednesday Go sessions at Uwajimaya, so Dennis can attend the Go programming sessions. Dennis has been doing it for years, so you *know* it's a lot of fun. Please get in touch with me (or Dennis) if you're interested playing and teaching Go (and not so much interested in teaching computers to play Go).

Thanks for reading!

[Seattle Go Center] Closed Wed. till Jan.; Social Media Mogul

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

Wednesdays
We've had very low turnout the last several Wednesdays. So ***the Go Center will be closed on Wednesdays*** until January 16, when Eric and Drew start up their Computer Go Meetup / Go Basics Class.
"What is this Computer Go Meetup?", you might be asking. Starting January 16th, 2019, Eric Barnes will be leading a meetup for people interested in machine learning at the Seattle Go Center. Participants will learn to program their own go-playing bot, and make it progressively better at defeating humans in a simulated war for the control of finite resources, using AI/ML techniques.
Sessions will be structured around a new book, Deep Learning and the Game of Go, available at: https://www.manning.com/books/deep-learning-and-the-game-of-go (use coupon code "buildyourbot50" for a 50% discount)
Manning, the publisher, is running a computer Go tournament: https://deals.manning.com/go-comp/

Wednesdays, continued
"What is this Go Basics Class?", you might be asking. Starting January 16th, 2019, Drew Barnett will be leading a series of sessions, starting from the bare bones fundamentals of capturing and building over time. This will complement the Computer Go sessions, and help folks who are more experienced with programming than Go.

There's no charge for attending these Wednesday sessions, other than the usual Go Center membership (youth 17 and younger always free; adults first 10 visits free; after the first 10 visits, $5 per visit or prepay $35 for 10 visits, or become a quarterly or annual member -- https://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details).

Tuesday (today!)
Join us at the Go Center for "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"! Open 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM, with instruction for beginners after 3:00, and freshly-baked bread to share sometime after 5:00.

Social Media
I'm pleased to announce that Catherine Ozols has volunteered to help out with posting stuff on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter! So if you appreciate the increase in the quantity and quality of posts, be sure to let our new Social Media Manager know.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Pair Go

Hey Go Fans-
I had fun at this weekend's Pair Go Tournament at the Seattle Go Center. For tomorrow's DDK class, we will talk about this fun (and frustrating) Go variant. I will step you through some of the hilarities of my own pair go game with Lee Hajin, the former 4D Pro who you may recognize from her popular YouTube channel, Haylee's World of Baduk

This class and the following week will be the LAST DDK CLASSES OF 2018! Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Volunteer party coordinator?

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

I was trying to figure out the Go Center closures due to holidays -- we won't be open Tuesday, December 25, for example -- and I noticed that 2018 is ending soon, and year another beginning.

Specifically, I was trying to figure out whether the Go Center should be open on Tuesday, January 1. I'm not sure whether attendance will be low because everyone will be celebrating elsewhere (or sleeping off the effects of too much celebration), or whether attendance will be high because everyone has the day off (and, what better way to start the new year than by playing Go?).

So, how much interest is there in holding a party at the Go Center to mark the changing of the year? Please reply to programs@seattlego.org and let me know which of these best describes your situation:
1 - Not going to be at the Go Center on Tue. Jan. 1.
2 - Planning to be at the Go Center on Tue. Jan. 1, if it's open.
3 - Planning to bring friends to the Go Center on Tue. Jan. 1, so please be open.
4 - Willing to help organize a New Year celebration at the Go Center on Tue. Jan. 1.

Thanks for your help!

[Seattle Go Center] Correction - PAIR GO is Sat. December 8

Hi everyone,

I put the wrong date in the Pair Go announcement email a few hours ago -- thanks for the catch, Wesley! It's actually this coming Saturday, December 8, with registration beginning at 5:00 PM. (I don't know why I had put "December 16" -- I must have doubled the date, because there are two players per team??)

I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this caused.

I've gotten a few questions about Ha-jin "Haylee" Lee's participation. She is not scheduled to do any teaching or simuls this time; she's just coming to play Pair Go for fun.

Here's the corrected announcement:
GALA NIGHT OF PAIR GO with special guest Ha-jin Lee ("Haylee" on YouTube), 4 Dan professional! Join us for this great holiday event, with two rounds of Pair Go, cake, prizes and lots of fun! $10 dollars general admission, $5 dollars for voting members and youth (under 18). We will be following International Pair Go Rules. Each team must have one male partner, and one female, transgender, or non-binary partner. Team members may be of any age.
Registration will be from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. on the day of the tournament, Saturday, December 8; we will finish around 10 p.m. This is not an official Pair Go competition, so formal dress is encouraged, but not required.
