[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Trick Moves!

Hey Everybody!
In tomorrow's DDK class I will be covering a few famous "trick" moves and how to properly respond to them. Note: I am not liable for how you use these moves in your own games. If you decide to play a trick move and your opponent responds correctly, this conversation never happened.

Subject: AGA rated Self-Pair games anytime at the Seattle Go Center

We've had available for sometime the ability to submit individual self-pair rated games, but no one has yet taken advantage -- until this past Tuesday. Yay.

This past week, some Tuesday night players played a self-paired rated game and have submitted their results to be entered into the AGA ratings database. As the Self-Pair TD, I've just submitted those game results, and you should soon see them posted here (it could take up to a week to show up):

There are slips on the front desk with instructions and requirements. Games can be played anytime throughout the week, and the TD need not be present (the Go Center manager or other members should be sufficient). Players must have current AGA membership.

Place the completed game result slip in the jar on the desk, and I'll periodically gather them and submit the results to be rated.

Take full advantage of your AGA membership and get your games rated, keeping your own public rating up-to-date. No need to wait for the monthly ratings tournament. Play often and have fun either way, or do both and play even more games. One of the best ways to improve, is to play and play often. Make those rated games and keep track of your progress over time (but never worry about single loses or wins or small streaks, we're in it for the long haul).

Get yourself on the national top 10 list too :)

And here's another valuable resource for tracking your progress and games:

[Seattle Go Center] Jin Chen Tournament has been rated

Dear members,

The Jin Chen Tournament Handicapped Section has been re-rated by the AGA using corrected information.  We found a bug in the pairing software and corrected it. Please let me know if you find any more anomalies. The Open Section has also been rated now.  You can get detailed rating information by going to the AGA database at:

http://agagd.usgo.org/

Here is the tournament summary:  Mark Lee won the sixth annual Jin Chen Memorial Tournament, held at the Seattle Go Center on January 3.  This was not a big surprise; readers may remember that he was undefeated in the U.S. Open in 2014.  Dong (David) Ma placed 2nd in the Open Section of the Jin Chen, which had eight players.  The Handicapped Sections had 20 players.   The Dan Handicapped Section was won by Zhihong Yao, with Dengda (Dan) Tang placing 2nd.  The SDK section was won by John Johnson, with Eric Backus placing 2nd.  The DDK  section was won by Elan Ma, with Michael Hixenbaugh placing second.  Elan, who was undefeated in her games, also won the Youth Prize.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Yang Workshop: which weekend?

Dear Go Players,

We are scheduling our annual workshop with Mr. Yilun Yang 7P.  Mr. Yang is one of the best English speaking Go teachers in North America, with numerous publications in our library.  He is also famous for his puzzles.

Here is a simple puzzle for you: which weekend is better for his workshop?  April 9-10 or April 16-17?

The calendar with our other springtime events  is here:

Please email me with your vote.

[Seattle Go Center] white is black and black is white

Dear Tournament Players,

Our apologies!  We submitted an incorrect tournament report for the Jin Chen Handicapped Section to AGA ratings.  In fact, it was perfectly incorrect: the columns for players using white and those using black were reversed by a glitch in the software.  We will send in a correct report on Tuesday evening, but I am not sure how long it will take the AGA to straighten out our mess.  In the meantime, your AGA rating may be a little odd.

The results of the Open Section of the Jin Chen Memorial Tournament have not been sent in yet.  We are waiting for a membership renewal, done on paper, to be recorded first.  We will try very hard to send in a correct report when the time comes!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Mark Lee doing game analysis tonight - Monday Jan. 4

Dear Go Players,

Mark Lee is continuing his visit to Seattle by teaching the Monday night class tonight, Jan. 4. Sonny Cho will be assisting. This class is open to all levels, and there is no charge, except for your visit fee (if you are not a voting member, or a youth). Nick Sibicky will return next week. Bring your games for review. Mark will start reviewing games at 6:30, or perhaps earlier, depending on traffic.

Mark won the Jin Chen Tournament (Open Section) on Sunday. We congratulate him, but we are not surprised. In 2014, he won the U.S. Open by winning all 9 of his games!

On Tuesday, Mark Lee will be playing simultaneous games, starting at 6:30. There is one more space available. The first person to email me at manager@seattlego.org can have that space. There is no charge for the simultaneous games.

Cheers,
Brian
