[Seattle Go Center] About our Go stones

Dear Members,

If you’ve been to the Go Center recently, you may have noticed that we have been cleaning and sorting Go stones, so that we have fewer bowls of miscellaneous stones, and more bowls of Go stones with a purpose.  Let me tell you about our different types of stones, and how to tell them apart.

All our stones are in the Japanese and Korean style, with curves on both sides of the stone, a shape often described as “biconvex”.  In the main room, we use two kinds of glass stones.  Most of our stones came from the Nihon Ki-in in Japan about 25 years ago.  They are in the brown wooden bowls.  If you run out of stones in one of these bowls, you can borrow stones of the same color from another brown wooden bowl.  Unfortunately, we cannot find an exact match for these stones, so when we wanted to have more bowls of stones, we bought slightly thicker stones.  (These are 6 Brothers #33 stones, which we got from Korea.  Their edges are also a bit blunter.) Theses stones are stored in the bamboo bowls in the main room.  Please try to keep these stones separate from our original stones.  But you can exchange stones between bamboo bowls.

The regular glass stones we sell from our display case are slightly thinner than what we use in the main playing room.  These are 6 Brothers #31 stones.  Many people regard them as “standard stones”.  They are also described as 8.5 mm thick biconvex stones.

For outreach events such as Sakura Con, and school clubs, we use smaller glass stones.   (Both their diameter and their thickness is somewhat less than standard.)  The glass stones are generally stored in screw top containers with blue or red lids.  These stones are not well matched, but they are all small.  They are sometimes called 6.5 mm stones, or 6 Brothers #21 stones. If the pint container is full, there are enough stones for a 19x19 game.  We often use half full containers for school visits, where we are playing 9x9 and 13x13 games.  These containers are stored in the closet and in the canvas totes that are at the back, in the NE corner of our space.  A reminder: if you want glass stones for your outreach project, look for the colored lids.

We also have plastic stones for outreach and schools.  They slip around more on the board, but they are a lot easier to carry.  We have Ing style plastic stones, which are thick and stored in screw top containers with clear lids.  We also have thinner plastic stones, which are stored in plastic containers with snap top lids, which are tan or clear.

For backup at big tournaments, we also have Ing tournament stones.  They are stored in large distinctive hexagonal boxes.  Please open these boxes carefully, moving the sliders first.  These are matte plastic stones with metal centers (for weight).  In general, we do not use these stones, but they are available for big events.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Robot Openings

Hey Go Fans-
Wow! It has been a long time since we've met for class. Between the snow, and President's Day, we've had a lot of time off. I hope you are excited to come back to the SGC for a very special class on high-level concepts and strategies for Go openings. Tomorrow's class will focus on looking at some of the tendencies and objectives of the current generation of AI algorithms. Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Closed - no DDK today

Hi Go folks,

The Go Center is closed today, in observance of the Presidents' Day holiday. Nick Sibicky returns with his renowned "Double Digit Kyu" class next Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 PM. Meanwhile, you might like to watch some of his previous lectures: https://www.youtube.com/NickSibicky

If you have time for a game this morning, Go players usually congregate 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon at Zoka Coffee, 2200 N 56th St, Seattle 98103.

Tomorrow (Tuesday), the Go Center will be open as usual, so join us for "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"! Open 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM, with instruction for beginners after 3:00. (And maybe Brandon will bring his Shogi stuff again -- that's been a pretty regular feature lately.)

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

[Seattle Go Center] Plumbing repair done - you can use the toilets

Dear Members,

The plumbing repair is done; or at least the important part - you can use the toilets again. We still have some paving to do,
but you can use the lower parking lot on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Cheers,
Brian

Dear Members,

Thanks to a temporary fix, our toilets and drains are now working again, this Thursday evening, Feb. 14. They will finish
the permanent fix on Friday, so on Saturday, the next day we are open, there should be no problems.

[Seattle Go Center] No Toilets on Thursday, Feb. 14

Dear Members,

We are having work done on our sanitary sewer, and it is taking longer than originally planned.   It is possible that the work will not be done until Friday morning, which means that we will not be able to use the toilets this Thursday evening, Feb. 14.  I’ll send an update if the schedule changes, hopefully for the better.

Regards,

Brian

I spoke too soon -- it looks like we have six signed up for Advanced Go on Feb. 14! Stay tuned for confirmation. (But Yue Zhang is out of town Feb. 21, so that one really is canceled.)

[Seattle Go Center] Open today 1-8 PM; Advanced Go canceled Thu.

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,

The Go Center will be open today at 1:00 PM, but we'll be closing early at 8:00 (unless someone with keys volunteers to stay and close later). Much of the snow and ice has melted, and currently it's raining. The parking lot is full of slush, so if you drive, you might want to wear your rain boots.

The current forecast for tonight is for rain and snow, so I *think* we'll probably be open Wednesday, Feb. 13, for the "Programming Computer Go" session with Eric and Drew; but check the website or email tomorrow to be sure.

The "Advanced Go" class is canceled this Thursday, Feb. 14, and next Thursday, Feb. 21, due to not enough players signed up and instructor travel; so this is a good time to put the Advanced Go program on "pause" and rethink our fuseki. Watch for further announcements!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: CANCELED (snow)

Hey Go Fans-
The forecast is looking pretty grim tomorrow night, so I am pre-emptively canceling our DDK class. Stay safe, stay warm, and play Go with someone close to you (or someone far away online)!

Next week, Feb 18, is President's Day. There is no scheduled class that day, so I will plan to see you all back on Feb 25!

[Seattle Go Center] Snow Saturday - probably closed

Hello Go Folks,

With the snow coming down and predicted to make travel difficult the rest of the weekend, I'm thinking whether to close the Go Center until Monday. I feel a bit bad about this because I know some of you live close enough to walk, and wouldn't let minor details like a blizzard and a foot of snow keep you away from your Go community. I'll make a final decision in the morning when I hear what the roads are like. (If anyone with keys to the building who lives close enough to walk wants to volunteer to open the Go Center, let me know.)

See you at the Go Center (perhaps not quite as soon as I'd imagined),

Greetings, Go folks,

Advanced Go cancelled this week

https://www.seattlego.org/advanced-go-feb-2019/

Complete Beginners going strong
Complete Beginners class with Larry Eclipse, Thursdays 6:30-8:30 PM, is a great way for new players to get GOing, with
an understanding of the rules and some simple tactics. Larry gets you playing on the 9x9 board, and ready to go forth
and "lose your first 100 games as quickly as you can", as the proverb says. Tuition: $Free!

This Weekend
- The Go Center is closed as usual this Friday, but you can play Friday morning, 9:00-12:00 at Zoka Coffee (Greenlake),
2200 N. 56th St., Seattle 98103.
- Saturday at the Go Center: Open 1:00-8:00 PM.
-Speed League! A just-for-fun way to play way too fast. Time limits: 10 minutes main time, with three overtime
periods of 20 seconds byo-yomi. Register in person, 1:15 - 1:45 PM. First round starts by 2:00. If you're running late,
call us at 206-545-1424 and we'll try to pair you in. The third round is usually finished by 4:00 or 4:15.
- Saturday in Bellevue: Kin On/ASCF Community Center, 15921 NE 8th St, Suite C-206, Bellevue, WA 98008 -- Go
players get together for casual games, 1:00-5:00 PM.

[Seattle Go Center] Open Today Tuesday Feb. 5 from 1-10 p.m.

Dear Go Players,

The Seattle Go Center will be open today, Tuesday, Feb 5 from 1-10 p.m.  As usual, we will have fresh baked bread and hot drinks.  The main streets in our area are already clear of snow and ice, and our upper parking lot is mostly bare pavement.  We will even set the thermostat a little higher than usual, if you ask Mike Malveaux nicely.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Robot Openings

Hey Go Fans-
During tomorrow's DDK class we will be discussing six opening positions that robots play differently than traditional human play. Even though this sounds like an advanced and highly theoretical Go class, I hope to break it down to the basic heuristics and values that newer players can understand and apply to their own games. This should be good class for many different levels of Kyu players to attend!
