[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday Feb. 1 at 10.

Dear Members,

Here is a friendly reminder that our Monthly Ratings Tournament has registration from 10 to 10:45 am, with the first round at 11 am at the Go Center. Several people have asked me when the second round will end, presumably because they want to watch the Puppy Bowl, which starts at 3:00 on the Animal Planet cable. We are not sure if the second round will be done by 3:00 -- it should be close to being finished. If you are planning to miss a round, please notify the TD before he does the pairing.

Pot luck contributions for lunch are welcome. Nachos, chicken wings, or guacamole and chips might be nice.

Cheers,
Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Jin Chen Tournament Results

Dear Members,

My apologies for not sending this out sooner, but here is the report on the Jin Chen Tournament at the Seattle Go Center, which had 30 players:

The Open Section of the Jin Chen Memorial Tournament at the Seattle Go Center drew twelve players, including two 7 dans and three 6 dans.  Since the Jan. 4 tournament had only three rounds, there was a tie for first place between Boyang Chen 6d from Oregon, and Chan Chung 5d from the Seattle area.  Edward Kim placed 3rd, after losing one game on time.

Go Center members were intrigued to meet the teacher of Edward Kim 7d, since Edward has taught many of the strong players in the Northwest.   Years ago, Edward’s teacher was his older brother Hong Kim, who now lives in Federal Way.  This was the first time Hong played in an AGA rated tournament.  He won the handicapped section for players 2 kyu and stronger, playing as a 2d.  Second place went to young Chanseok Oh.

The 3 kyu to 9 kyu band was won by local Frank Brown, with new player Ben Resnick placing second.  The double digit kyu player’s section was won by Elan Ma, with second to California visitor Barry Stiefel.  Elan also won the children’s prize.  There were 30 players at the tournament, which is held on the first Sunday in January every year to mark the birthday of our old friend Jin Chen.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night: Seattle Go Center, Tonight, 7pm

Hello all,

Tonight we have another night of Go for new players to get games, talk basic strategy, learn some familiar patterns that arise in the game, and just spend more time with this great game.

Tailored explanations are provided for new students while old students often are paired in games.

See you all tonight.

[Seattle Go Center] Thursday Meetup in Bellevue

Hello everyone. We're having our regular Thursday meetup tomorrow, like always (unless there are extraordinary circumstances). We have been getting about 5-6 people every week, ranging from 30 kyu to 5 dan. Most of the time everyone can find a game, and beginners are welcome. Come on down and join us!

We meet at the Crossroads Mall in Bellevue from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, and we set up on the tables in front of Uncle's Games.

[Seattle Go Center] Ratings Tournament this Sunday, Feb. 1

Dear Go Players,

The Monthly Ratings Tournament is coming up next Sunday, Feb. 1, with registration from 10:00 – 10:45 am, and the first round at 11:00.  We understand that there is a football game later that day, but last year we had 12 players on a Super Bowl Sunday.

Potluck contributions of chicken wings, nachos, and guacamole are welcome for the lunch break.

You do not have to play all three rounds in our Rating Tournament, so I think it would be possible to play two rounds at the Go Center before the car and truck ads (excuse me… football game) start up at 3:30 pm.  However, if you plan to leave early, please notify the Tournament Director before he does the pairing for the next round!

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] Beginner's Night: Seattle Go Center, Tonight, 7pm

Hello Go Community,

Tonight Beginner's Night continues! Introduction for new individuals to Go is tailored. Please tell people who you know who are interested and would benefit from some gentle introduction to the game. If you have family members, partners, or kids who have hard time learning from your more "advanced" perspective on the game, bring them and we'll do our best to help with the introduction to this great game. Maybe you can find a game while you wait :)

See you tonight.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Class Tomorrow: The Newest Pro

Hi Everyone!

We will kick off our 2015 Double-Digit Kyu class tomorrow with a game from the recent AGA Pro Tournament. As you may or may not know, Ryan Li won and is now the world's freshest professional go player (see here: http://www.usgo.org/news/)

The Ryan Li game that we will analyze will come from the finals; where Ryan Li faced Eric Lui and both players fanatically abandoned their own stones to gain advantages elsewhere on the board. The middle of the game focused on both player's weakest groups running to the center and looked liked it might come down to a giant capturing race. However, Ryan planned a series of brilliant middlegame tesuji that ensured safety for all groups (temporarily). Come tomorrow evening to find out what happened next!

Note: There will be no class meeting on the following week in observance of MLK day

As an additional reminder, you can see previous class sessions online here: https://www.youtube.com/user/nicksibicky
