[Seattle Go Center] Big Anniversary Tournament this Sunday, Oct. 2

Dear Members,

Come celebrate our 21th Anniversary with a Tournament!  This is a great way to play some intense Go face to face with 3 rounds and Japanese rules. Entry fee: $15 general admission, $10 youth and voting members.  There will be prizes – books and equipment for kyu players, and cash for the dan players.  First place in the Open Section will be $150, if we have at least 4 people in the open section.  Registration is from 10:00 - 10:30 sharp. There is no advanced registration.

If you are probably a double digit kyu player, but haven’t played a rated tournament yet, this is a good time to start out.  There will be other players within handicapping range of you.

AGA membership is required; please check to see if your membership is current, and try to renew it online if it needs to be updated.  More info on membership is at https://www.usgo.org/members/login

You can join the AGA or renew in person at the Go Center as well, but please come early to do that.  You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director what your plans are.

If your first game runs long, you do not have much time for lunch.  We recommend that you bring food to the Go Center, rather than planning on going out to get lunch.

Note: We will also be celebrating our 21st Anniversary on Tuesday, Oct 11, with a potluck dinner at 6:00 p.m.

Cheers,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK class tomorrow 9/26: Reductions and Invasions

Hello dear go players,

Have you ever played a game where the opponent has built up a ridiculously large moyo that seems to spell certain death for your invading group? Ever wonder what "light play" means and how to achieve it?

Tomorrow will be your chance to learn some of the basics and ask questions! Jonathan Cheng will be subbing again for the DDK class. The topic will be reductions and invasions into enemy frameworks, along with the healthy dose of life and death and tesuji that goes along with that.

Hope to see you there!

-Lucy

[Seattle Go Center] The return of DDK class: tomorrow 9/18 6p

Hello go players,

I'm sure you're all antsy to get back to the go classroom after our August hiatus. Tomorrow, Monday, will see the return of the DDK class. Jonathan Cheng will be substituting this week and next before Nick's return.

You may remember Jonathan from his guest lectures in the summer. This week, he will be conducting simultaneous handicap games. Whether you're still feeling the sting of defeat from last time or would like to practice some new moves against a dan-level player, come try your hand against him!

Doors open around 6pm.

See you there!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK class starts Monday, Sept 19, and completes our schedule

Dear Go Players,

The Double Digit Kyu Players Class (DDK) will start up this fall with two sessions by Jonathan Cheng, on Monday Sept 19 and Sept 26.  Nick Sibicky will return to teach later this fall, probably on Oct. 3.  This class is for players in the 20 kyu to 10 kyu range.  If you do not know what your rating is, but you can finish a 19x19 game, this class is for you.  Stronger players also enjoy this class and are welcome to attend, as long as they respect the instructor’s plan to keep the lessons accessible to DDK players.

We are now running our full fall schedule, with classes on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings.  We are now open on Thursday afternoons at 2, with Lucy as host. We continue to be open on Tuesdays from 1-10 pm, our biggest day, and Saturdays 1-7 pm.

We also have a new meet-up/outreach event at Hurry Curry in the South Lake Union area, starting Monday, Sept 19.  Other meet-ups are at Zoka’s Coffee House in Tangletown, Uwajimaya in the International District, The Couth Buzzard in Greenwood, and Crossroads in Bellevue.  For more information,  please visit:

http://www.seattlego.org/clubs-and-meet-ups/

[Seattle Go Center] On Line Team Tournament with German Club

While at Maeda Sensei's Osaka Go Camp this summer, Bill Chiles from the Seattle Go Center met a German player, Holger. Holger's go club in Berlin enjoys fun tournaments between go clubs. These are for friendship and cultural sharing, and Holger's folks even hang out at someone's house while a game is being played on line, drink beer, eat food, discuss the game (of course, without helping the person playing the game :-)). We are just beginning to plan such a tournament between Seattle and Holger's go club.

For now we would simply like to gauge interest.  Who would be interested in committing to some online games with this other club?  If you are interested, the first step is to register with the Go Server “OGS” at https://online-go.com

(By the way, this Go Server is easy to use.  It does not require that you download a “client”.)

The second step is to join the group “Seattle-Berlin” within OGS.  Click the “Groups” tab, and then type “Seattle” into the search field. So join this group! (Seattle-Berlin). If there's enough interest, we'll talk to Holger and have some of his folks join this group, and play some test games.

For the tournament, we would likely group people by obvious strength buckets and create pairings. The games would be handicapped. After we play the test games, we will figure out the handicapping (American Go Association vs. European Go Federation). Perhaps everybody will have an OGS rating by then, and we can use that. We can also work out schedules and when games are played so that, for example, if we wanted to have a gathering of people while a game is going on, we can do that too. Because of the time difference, it looks like the best time to play tournaments will be around 10 am or 11 am on the weekends, Pacific Daylight Time.

That's all the info for now, so please join the Seattle-Berlin OGS group at https://online-go.com  if you are interested. While we won't kick off the tournament probably until after the winter holidays, please do sign up in the next couple of weeks so that we can play some informal games to judge our relative strengths.

[Seattle Go Center] Volunteer(s) needed for New Outreach in South Lake Union

Dear Members,

Hurry Curry of Tokyo, which is in the South Lake Union area, at 825 Harrison St., has offered us space for Go playing in the evening.

http://hurrycurryoftokyo-seattle.com/

The best nights for them are probably Monday or Thursday.  They say they are very busy at lunch time, but in the evening they have room for Go players.

We are looking for a volunteer to be host and instructor for this event.  We will try this for three weeks, and see how it goes.  Hurry Curry will extend the happy hour rates all night for Go Players (until 10 pm).  They serve food, beer, sake, and fountain drinks.   The Go Center volunteer will get free fountain drinks.

Please contact me if you are interested in volunteering.

[Seattle Go Center] SDK Class Tomorrow - 13x13 and 9x9!

Hi all,

Tomorrow (Wednesday, September 7th at 7:00pm) we'll kick off the single-digit kyu academic year by re-examining small boards - are 13x13 and 9x9 just for beginners? OF COURSE NOT! We'll talk about the differences between 19x19, 13x13, and 9x9, and how we can use 13x13 and 9x9 to focus on skills that will directly translate back to 19x19 (e.g. counting, endgame).

We should have time at the end of class to play some games on small boards. It'll be fun AND informative, WOW!

Hope to see you tomorrow at 7pm!

Peter Nelson
