[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Invasion Follow-ups

Greetings Go fans-
During tomorrow's DDK class we will be looking at several board positions where either you or your opponent has just invaded. We will learn to identify follow-ups for both the invader and the defender. If you have trouble dealing with invasions, this class is for you! Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] South Lake Union Go meetup needs volunteers + publicity

Hello Go Folks,

The Go Center needs one or (preferably) two volunteers to play and teach Go regularly at Hurry Curry of Tokyo, a Japanese curry restaurant in the South Lake Union neighborhood (across the street from Amazon's "Brazil" building). The volunteer who's been doing it for years (thanks, Daniel!!) has reduced availability. Currently, we're there Mondays from 5:30 to 8:00 PM, but that can be adjusted to whatever weekday you're available.

The location has several things going for it: Friendly and accommodating staff (they even store equipment for us -- no need to lug boards and stones around!), inexpensive garage parking / free street parking after 6 PM, inexpensive "happy hour" food menu, decent (in my opinion) background music, decent sized tables, outdoor seating for nice weather, indoor seating for not-so-nice weather.

This Go meetup has had a few surges in attendance, but lately attendance has been low. (That's why I hope for two volunteers -- to entertain each other when things are slow, and to teach more newcomers when things are hopping.) We're hoping to improve that with more publicity. If you work for Amazon or another company in that area, please mention it to your coworkers / on your internal "things to do" message boards and wikis.

Hurry Curry of Tokyo
825 Harrison St.
Seattle, WA 98109
http://hurrycurryoftokyo-seattle.com/

Please contact me to volunteer. Don't worry that you're not a strong enough player -- you don't have to be very strong to teach new players how to capture; and if you want some tips on teaching, I or another experienced teacher will work with you and help you feel comfortable.

Thanks,

Mike Malveaux

PS - I'm having trouble thinking of Go jokes, so here's just a joke. Or maybe a riddle. Either way, it made me chuckle.

What gets wetter the more it dries?

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Shin Jinseo

Greetings Go Fans!
I will be reviewing one of Shin Jinseo's most recent tournament games during the Double-Digit Kyu Class tomorrow night. Shin Jinseo is currently rated the #3 best (human) player in the world, and at only 18 years old he is the youngest in the top 10. His skills have continuously and rapidly improved over the past few years, in particular, and we have yet to see him peak as a competitor. If you were only going to watch one go player for the next ten years, it's not too far a stretch to say that player should be Shin! I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Dan subs for Drew tonight; Uwajimaya

Hello Go folks,

Drew Barnett can't make it today to teach his "Go Basics" class, so his 6:30-8:30 PM session is cancelled today only -- he will resume next Wednesday. However, Dan Cooper will be opening the Go Center today, 6:00-8:30 PM, and will talk about "horrible robot losses". (I don't think that's losing a robot, but rather losing *to* a robot.)  He'll bring a few of his recent games to discuss, from 6:30 to 8:30.

Elsewhere in Seattle's Go scene, Dennis Wheeler hosts the weekly Wednesday Go meetup at Uwajimaya (600 5th Av S., Seattle, WA 98104) in the food court, 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

[Seattle Go Center] NW Chinese School needs Go instructors

Hello Go folks,

Northwest Chinese school Weiqi class is looking for volunteer teachers! As generally is the case, you need to know how to play **but** you don't have to be especially strong to teach these kids -- many are beginners, and a patient smile may be more important than understanding the latest joseki. Last week, there were 10 students, and they're expecting more this Saturday.

Location: Newport High School (Room 1106), 333 Factoria Blvd SE, Bellevue, WA 98006
Hour: 12:00 to 2:00 PM on Saturdays
Student: All Chinese Americans fluent both in Chinese and English, aging 5 to 12.

If you can help, let me know and I'll put you in touch with Sonny Cho, the head teacher.

All the best,

Mike Malveaux

[Seattle Go Center] McDonald Int. Elem. Go Club signup this Sunday Eve, Sept 16

Dear Members,

If you know a grade school student going to McDonald International Elementary, a Seattle public school in Wallingford near the Go Center, please remind their parents that the signup for Go Club starts tonight, Sunday Sept. 16, at 7:00 p.m.    We are part of the regular after school program, organized by the PTA. We meet on Thursdays, from 2:35 to 4:05 p.m. Last year, the club filled up by the end of registration week.

To sign up, follow the link to the 6Crickets website from this page:

http://www.mcdonaldpta.org/before-after-school

Go Club at McDonald has a maximum of 16 students, and at least two teachers for every class, so we have a very good teaching ratio.  Complete beginners are welcome.  This is a 1.5 hour class, with a much appreciated playground break in the middle. This year, the teachers will be Brian Allen, Ben Resnick and Peter Kron.  We will probably have other talented volunteers as well.

Cheers,

Brian Allen

Operations Manager

Seattle Go Center

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Tombstone

Greetings Go Fans!
Tomorrow's Double-Digit Kyu class will be all about The Tombstone shape. Given the potency of the shape, it is known by many other names, such as the Pagoda Squeeze or the Stone Tower. This shape is common in Dan-level tesuji, but is often mystical in nature to kyu players. If you haven't ever made use of this powerful shape before, you definitely need to attend this class!

In October, the Go Center celebrates our 23rd anniversary with a tournament and a party!
- The tournament will be Sunday, October 7, and will feature fabulous prizes for players who win all three of their games!  AGA membership required, and $15 to play ($10 for youth under 18, and for voting members of the Go Center) -- includes pizza lunch.  $150 cash prize for the Open section.  Register in person, 10:00-10:45 AM; first round starts at 11:00.
- The party will be Saturday, October 13, after Speed League; further details soon!

PS - As a new player, I found some Go jargon quite confusing.  The real-world analogies seemed intractably paradoxical.  How could Black's shapes be "thin" and simultaneously "heavy", while White's usually were "thick" yet "light"?

Somewhat recycling previous jokes:
How many Black players does it take to change a bulb?

(They can't -- too heavy to climb the ladder.)

How many White players does it take to change a bulb?

(They don't need to -- they're already light.)

Greetings Go Fans!
I am happy to announce that I am returning from summer hiatus to being our fall season of the DDK class tomorrow! Joining me will be the illustrious Andrew Jackson.
