[Seattle Go Center] Cherry Blossom is this weekend!

Hi All,

This is one of the years when we have back to back festivals, and so let me remind you that Cherry Blossom Festival is this weekend, April 26-28  at the Seattle Center, under the Space Needle.  We will be in our usual place in the Loft section of the Armory, one floor up from the food court. The Go Center will be there 10 am – 6 pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  We are particularly interested in having teachers ready on Friday morning at 10 am – we have school groups coming.  Let Mike Malveaux know if you can help out.

Best,

Brian

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: #1 vs #2!

Hey Go Fans-
Tomorrow's DDK class will review last month's tournament game between the top two players in the world, Shin Jinseo and Park Jungwhan. Shin, the young upstart, played the newest "brutal" 3-3 invasion joseki in the lower right corner. Since AI, top players are experimenting with this joseki everywhere. Interestingly of note, this joseki seems to even trip up AI programs. Shin uses large sacrifice to build a huge moyo in the center of the board which Park Jungwhan has to find a way to live inside.

Does Park live? Does Shin kill? Come find out tomorrow!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Killing Common Corner Shapes

Hey Go Fans-
Have you ever looked at your opponent's corner and said, "I know this shape is dead, but I don't know how to kill it"? Well, we are going to look at a number of the most common (not alive) corner shapes and practice killing them! What could be more fun and educational than that?

I spoke too soon. A volunteer, Naoya, has agreed to take charge of the 4-20 Shogi meetup. But, he arrives about 2:30, not 1:00. So, come on in next Saturday for some Shogi! (Or for some games of Go!)

Announcements assistance
Some folks have mentioned to me that it would be nice if reminder announcements went out a little sooner, and a little more regularly. Fortunately, through the magic of Narateena the Go Center Elf, you should soon begin seeing brief reminders a few weeks and a few days before monthly, annual, and one-time events at the Go Center. (Yay!!!) Thanks, Narateena.

Go Center decorum
- If you're using an electronic device (phone, iPad, laptop, etc.), please turn off the audio or use headphones / earbuds.
- Please don't have food at the Go boards. (I've been guilty of this myself, but no more.) Eat at the conference table, the coffee table, or in the kitchen. (Beverages at the Go boards are ok.)
- If someone's behavior disturbs you, feel free to quietly discuss it with them. If that doesn't bring the result you desire, then please bring your concern to the manager on duty, rather than escalating the situation.
- Thank you to everyone who has been putting their dishes in the dishwasher -- it makes cleaning up later sooo much easier!
- Thank you to everyone who has been giving their their bottles / cans / plastic containers a quick rinse before putting them in the recycling! (And everyone who has been putting metal cans and plastic bottles in the green composting bags -- please don't do that.)

International Nick
Kudos to Nick Sibicky, who has been killing it lately -- *two* videos from Yuto Tajiri 5P's visit in March (Thanks, Hiko, for nice translating!):
#337 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lBIy1Oi53co (Yuto reviews his 2017 game vs. Hideo Otake 9P; which you can replay: http://ps.waltheri.net/database/game/77685/ )
#338 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blYE9vR0XiE (Nick plays against Yuto, with some advice from the audience)
Nick also did commentary (with Eric Lui 1P) on Game 1 of the AGA vs EGF Transatlantic Professional Go Team Championship -- Mateusz Surma vs. Andy Liu, seen by reportedly more than 12,000 viewers on YouTube and Twitch:

[Seattle Go Center] Thursday hours changing (4PM-9PM); Speed League Saturday

Hello Go folks,

Thursday - New Hours
After Thursday, April 11, the Go Center's Thursday hours will change.  Effective next week, April 18, the Go Center will
open at 4:00 PM (not 2:00), and stay open until 9:00 PM.  The (free!) "Complete Beginners" class with Larry Eclipse still will be 6:30 - 8:30 PM, and "Advanced Go" (*tuition - see below) with Yue Zhang still will be 7:00 - 9:00 PM.

* General tuition for the "Advanced Go" class is $25 for the two-hour session (includes admission to the Go Center -- no
need to punch your card).  For Youth (17 and younger), Quarterly, Yearly, and Lifetime Members of the Go Center, it's
$20 for the two-hour session.  If the tuition would present an obstacle to attending the class, please talk to Mike
(Programs Manager), because scholarship funds are available.

Second Saturday Speed League
Saturday, April 13, come to the Go Center for a hair-raising race against time -- and against your opponent, who also will be racing against the clock. SPEED LEAGUE! It's tournament Go, but too fast to be rated: 10 minutes per player, plus 3 byo-yomi periods of 20 seconds! Register 1:15 - 1:45 (free, though Go Center membership policies apply -- https://seattlego.org/membership/); first round starts by 2:00, and we're generally done by 4:00.

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: The Comb Formation

Greetings Go Fans-
Monday's DDK class will revolve around the "comb" formation. This six-space living shape is often played by dan-level players to make life in otherwise dire circumstances, though there are lots of exceptions and possible complications. Come familiarize yourself with the shape and how to make best use of it in your own games!

[Seattle Go Center] Sakura-con outreach scheduling

Hello Go folks,

To the best of my recollection, I've sent email about scheduling to the people who wanted to volunteer at Sakura-con (the weekend of April 19, 20, 21). If you wanted to volunteer but you didn't get an email this morning, (1) I'm sorry about that; and (2) please contact me, and we'll get you scheduled.

Folks volunteering for the Cherry Blossom Festival, Aprl. 26, 27, 28 at Seattle Center -- I'll email about scheduling in a few days. Don't worry, there are still slots open! (And you don't have to wait for me; you can email me your time preferences.)

Thanks for helping new people learn Go!

All the best,

[Seattle Go Center] 7 upcoming / ongoing events (and 2 in the past)

Hello, Go folks --

I have an accumulation of things to share with y'all. Here's the moyo:
Tournaments to play in,
tournaments to watch,
upcoming outreach,
Rengo/Pair Go survey,
fundraiser,
Youth tournament,
and lab coats!

Tournament to Play In - Sunday, April 7, 11AM
The first Sunday of April is coming up, so please join us at the free monthly tournament at the Go Center! Register 10:00-10:45 AM; and the first of three rounds starts at 11:00. Details are on the calendar, https://www.seattlego.org/events/

Tournament to Watch - Sunday, April 7, 11AM
American Go Association professional players are going up against European Go Federation professional players in the Transatlantic Professional Go Team Championship! https://transatlanticgo.org/
Games will be broadcast on YouTube and Twitch:
https://www.youtube.com/user/USGOWeb https://www.twitch.tv/europeangofederation https://www.twitch.tv/europeangofederation2
Ordinarily, I'd organize a watch party at the Go Center, but we're having a tournament of our own that day. If anyone is interested in watching subsequent matches, please email programs@SeattleGo.org

Spring Tournament (to play in) - Sunday, May 5
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo at the Go Center with three games of competition Go, and a chance to win fabulous prizes! Register 10:00-10:45 AM -- $10 general admission; $5 youth (17 and younger) and Go Center voting members -- includes lunch (probably pizza).
The Open section will be even games (6.5 komi) -- limited to 8 players maximum -- $150 prize to the player with three wins. Players who go undefeated in the Handicap section can choose a prize from a selection of Go equipment and books. The Youth Prize for players under 18 is $50, divided among all youth players who win all three of their games. Youth players can also win regular books / Go equipment prizes.
This is one of our three big annual tournaments -- please join in, if you can!

Outreach
Spring is a busy time of cultural festivals and street fairs where we teach how to play Go. We have two major festivals coming up this month:
Sakura-Con, April 19, 20, & 21, downtown at the Washington State Convention Center. I think we're ok for Friday 4-19 and Sunday 4-21, but we could use a couple more volunteers on Saturday. (Please volunteer soon, because I need to submit the list of names for badges.)
Cherry Blossom Festival, April 26, 27, and 28, at Seattle Center. We could use a couple more volunteers in all time slots.
Please don't feel intimidated about volunteering, even if you're a relatively new player. My experience is that teaching others how to play really crystalized things for me, and helped me better understand the game; and it turns out that teaching is a lot of fun!
If you've signed up to volunteer, watch for an email today or Thursday.

Rengo / Pair Go survey
The survey about Pair Go / Rengo events at the Go Center is still open. If you care about Pair Go or Rengo, then we want your opinion on two questions: (1) Time limits -- sudden death, or brief byo-yomi overtime? (2) Pair Go -- keep teams mandatory mixed gender (traditional World Pair Go rules), or go with a Rengo approach (gender is irrelevant in forming teams)?
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZDVCQF2
Thanks for helping out!

Fundraiser - Recharge the fund!
I'm sure you've noticed the Go board at the top of the stairs coming into the Go Center. Brian is using it to track progress toward our $8,800 fundraising goal. During Snowmaggedon, the Go Center sustained a serious blow to the sewerage pipe, and we depleted our "rainy day" fund getting it fixed. (I still think that, under the circumstances, it was a "snowy day" fund.) Anything you can contribute is welcome and appreciated!
https://www.seattlego.org/donate/rainy-day-fund/

Youth Tournament
Sunday, March 31, we held the Go Center's Spring Youth Tournament. 13 kids came to play, despite the excellent weather and the hideous traffic (reportedly 10 minutes to get from the I-5 exit, across NE 45th St., and into the Go Center parking lot). The youngest was in 1st grade, and the oldest was in 6th grade.
Just for fun, we experimented with a few team formats -- Rengo, tag-team Go, Sliding Go -- with mixed results, and ideas for how to do things next time. All the kids got snacks and prizes -- the Go sets, donated to the Go Center, were the first prizes chosen. Folding fans (autographed by professional Go players) also were popular.

Lab coats now required
In case you missed it -- As of April 1st, thanks to computers taking over the game of Go, the dress code for all Go Center instructors makes lab coats mandatory: http://www.usgo.org/news/2019/04/seattle-go-center-to-require-instructors-to-wear-lab-coats/ (Props to Brian for the pranky props!)

In other news -- our regular weekly programs are still going:
DDK Mondays, 6:30-8:30 with Nick Sibicky (free);
the Largest Weekly Gathering on Tuesdays, 1PM-10PM (free, with bread to share) -- Shogi players often attend;
Programming Computer Go on Wednesdays (free -- join in, if you want to get your hands dirty coding a Go-playing A.I.);
Double Threat Thursdays -- Beginners class with Larry (free), 6:30-8:30; and Advanced Go with Yue ($25; scholarships available), 7PM-9PM;
Saturdays, open 1PM-8PM -- Friendly games and beginner instruction; Shogi players attend the 3rd Saturday of the month.

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

PS - Why don't we allow cats to play Go at the Go Center?
