[Seattle Go Center] Weakly Kibitzer ()

Hello fellow Go fans,

Once again it's Tuesday, and I hope to see you this evening at the largest weekly gathering of Go players in the western hemisphere! The Go Center will be open 1:00 - 10:00 PM for casual play, with free instruction for beginners starting at 3:00 PM.

Request for Hardware
If you have a flat-screen computer monitor that works, that you're not using, please consider donating it to the Go Center, to replace one with blown capacitors in the main playing room. Also, if you've upgraded your photography equipment and you have a decent digital camera (with video capability) that you're not using, the Go Center can put it to good use. Thanks!

Reading Ahead: Upcoming Events

Wed. July 11, Sun. July 15, and Wed. July 18, 7:00 PM -- Advanced Go with Yue Zhang. There is still room for additional students, 9k and stronger, but there are only a few sessions left in this series, so join the class soon! http://www.seattlego.org/2018/06/15/advanced-go-class/

Mon. July 16, 6:30 PM -- Board of Directors meeting.

Sat. July 21, 1:00 PM -- Shogi at the Go Center! Brandon and Catherine love Go *and* Shogi, so they'll be running a Shogi meet-up, with instruction for beginners, on third Saturdays of the month. Our usual usage / membership policies apply (first 10 visits free, younger than 18 free, etc.). If you're curious about this Japanese form of Chess, come check it out!

Sat. July 21, and Sun. July 22 -- Outreach at Bon Odori Festival, Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple, 1427 S. Main St. We will be in the temple gym, teaching and sharing the game of Go. The festival has traditional Japanese folk dancing in the street, and lots of good food. Saturday, 4:00 - 9:00 PM; Sunday, 3:00 - 8:00 PM. We need volunteers to introduce Go, so please email me <programs@SeattleGo.org> or put your name on the sign-up sheet at the Go Center.

July 21 - July 29 -- U.S. Go Congress in Williamsburg, VA. Many of our community will invade the other side of the board, and we wish them success in their games and lots of fun at all the events!

Sun. Aug. 5 -- Monthly AGA ratings tournament! Register 10:00 - 10:45 AM. First round starts at 11:00.

Review

Yang Yi simuls
Saturday July 7, Seattle Go Center was delighted to have a visit from Mr. Yang Yi, 6 Dan professional from Chinese Weiqi Association! He engaged six players simultaneously. By all accounts, it was a wonderful and successful event.

Outreach
It was a wild week of outreach for our favorite game. Hopefully, over time the result will be more people for us to play! Sunday July 1, we introduced Go to dozens of basketball-loving kids and families at the Seattle Storm game at Key Arena. Big thanks to Melanie Clemenz, Yulissa Wu, Lucas Wu, Kate Dorsett, and Brian Willis! Then at Japan Fair in Bellevue, Sat. July 7 and Sun. July 8, we introduced Go to dozens of Japanese culture fans. We also met players who knew about the Go Center already, but rarely find time to stop in. The Hikaru no Go decorations Dave Snow brought attracted attention from folks who read / watched HnG years ago, and are learning to play at last. Thanks much to Dave Snow, Ned Beebe, Peter Kron, Kyle Burg, Frank Fukuda, Connie Hayashi, and Michelle Zimmerman! (And thanks to the player who taught several folks Sunday afternoon, who reads these emails, but whose name escaped my memory like someone who doesn't want their over-inflated IGS rating punctured. It was fun, and I hope you make it to the Go Center soon!)

Thanks!
Thanks for all your help, encouragement, and kind welcoming words over the past seven weeks. With your continued support, I'm sure that we can increase general familiarity with our game, and increase the number of players in our community!

See you at the Go Center,

A struggling kyu player from Kent
Whose four in the corner was bent,
Said, "Hard though I strive,
"It's still not alive!
"If only my ko threats weren't spent."
