Thanks volunteers!

I started to list all the volunteers I want to thank, who make the Go Center possible. There are too many; so for now I'll just call out the four stalwarts taking over for Daniel Top at Hurry Curry. (That's right, his Go outreach is so strong, it takes a team of four to replace him! They need some kind of Superhero Team name. The Tenuki Invasion? The Grand Moyo? The Four Corners? Well, that last one kind of rhymes at least.) Anyway, THANK YOU: Jiaqi, Keyi, Krish, and Maxfield!

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux

PS - Since it's Halloween -- Where do Go players go on Halloween?

(To the "Honte'd House"!)
Thanks Ned!!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Corner Kills

Greetings Go Fans-
During the last class we got to talk about some "higher level thinking" moves with regard to reducing positions, and I'm feeling a need to get back to some of the basics. So tomorrow night we will be looking at ways to kill some of the more common corner shapes that occur in games. Please join us for some deadly fun! Happy Halloween!

[Seattle Go Center] Youth Tournament Sun. Nov.18

Hello Go Folks,

Seattle Go Center will hold a fun tournament for youth (younger than 18 years old). This is a friendly tournament, for children at all levels of play. Children choose whether they want to play on 13x13 boards or 19x19 boards.

It will be at the Go Center, Sunday, November 18, 2018, from 1:00 PM until about 4: 30 PM. (The calendar says until 5:00 PM, but I am reliably informed that we usually finish earlier than that.)

There's no entry fee, and prizes will include Go books, equipment, and fun items. A good time undoubtedly will be had by all!

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Whole Board Workshop

Hey Gang!
So for the past month, we have focused our lessons on reviewing patterns for invading and reductions. Tomorrow, I'd like to try to apply some of that knowledge to a short series of "whole board" problems, where you must decide if you want to reduce, invade, counter-attack, defend, etc. They will be challenging but will provide us with much discussion about Go strategy. I hope to see you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Help with extension ladder needed Monday, Oct. 22

Dear Members,

I need some help moving our extension ladder from the front roof to outside, and then back again, anytime in the daytime on Monday.  The whole chore should take about an hour.  Let me know if you can help.

Cheers,

Brian

[ORE] Call Assist

I've been playing the DC Legends mobile game lately. Some of the characters have an ability named "Call Assist".
They make an attack and then someone else on their team makes a second followup attack. This followup attack is outside the normal attacks for the round.

How would you make it in Wild Talents?
Have it be an attack quality that uses your die roll but the teams attack power?
Have them make their own roll?

I'm a bit muddled in this. Anyone have some ideas?

Thanks,
Matt

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Should Hit Patterns

Hey Go Fans-
During the last two weeks, we've focused on looking at patterns arising from the most common invasions corner and side invasions. Tomorrow, I'd like to turn our attention to reductions and learn several of the most common variations. These patterns are more relevant than ever, given the various Go AI's affinity for them!

If you want to learn what to do after your opponent shoulder hits your stone, this class is for you! I hope to see you there.

[Seattle Go Center] One more item for auction

Hello Go Friends,

Mr. Frank Fukuda has donated an item for the auction tonight. It is a used "PockeTable" compact magnetic travel Go set, of a type I've seen only in Hikaru no Go. Folded up, it is 8" long x 4" wide x 1/2" thick. It won't be easy to play on, unless your fingers are much smaller than mine; but it is *highly* portable.

[Seattle Go Center] Party in 2 hours :-)

Hello Go Folks,

Sadly, only one player showed up today for Second Saturday Speed League; so that was canceled. We'll try again November 10.

Happily, the 23rd anniversary party is still on, starting at 5 PM! The silent auction fundraiser will run until 7 PM. Five items are up for auction!
Starting at $20: Antique thin slate and sell stones with wooden bowls, a magnetic travel baduk set with intense decorations on the outside (and with the original box), and a set of Korean stones in the original boxes (featuring what kinda looks like Mickey Mouse?!).
Starting at $5: Two sets of Nihon Ki-in postcards featuring Go scenes.

We do have a permit for you to bring liquor to this event, if you enjoy that.
So come for the food (free; and donations appreciated!), and stay for the Go! And/or the auction. It'll be great fun!

[Seattle Go Center] Party and Silent Auction this Saturday

Hello Go Friends,

As you'll have gathered by now, this October marks the Go Center's 23rd year. To celebrate, we held a tournament last Sunday, and we'll also be holding a party this upcoming Saturday, October 13.

The monthly "Second Saturday Speed League" tournament will run as usual. (Register in person, 1:15 - 1:45; three rounds; first round starts at 2:00; relatively short time limits mean we finish around 4:15 or 4:30. Come join the frenzy!)

The party will be 5:00 - 7:30 PM. There will be Thai vegetarian food and Korean barbecue. We will not be serving alcohol, but we have a banquet license for this event so you can BYOB. There also will be several uncommon donated items at a silent auction fundraiser -- two sets of Go postcards from the Nihon Ki-in, a set of Go stones in boxes marked with something that looks like Mickey Mouse, a "Picnic Magnetic Baduk" set with ornate decoration, and a few other items. Be sure to tell your friends who collect Go stuff!

See you Saturday at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] Tournament report from last Sunday

Hello Go Fans,

Sunday, October 7, 2018, the Go Center held a three-rounds tournament to celebrate our 23rd anniversary. 32 players attended, a quarter of whom have Youth memberships in the AGA! Tournament Director Bill Chiles handled clock malfunctions and consequent pairing delays with aplomb, and Daniel Top stepped in smoothly to render assistance.

The "Open" section was limited to eight players maximum, all vying for the First Prize of $150 cash. It was won by Alex Xinlei Liu (7 dan) with a 3-0 record. He has been a strong contender at Seattle tournaments, even winning the Seattle Go Center Spring Tournament Open in 2017.

The twenty-four players in the "Handicap" section all had games with handicaps of 3 stones or less, and all but two games were at 2 stones or less. "Handicap" players who won all three of their games were awarded prizes of Go books and equipment. In addition, there was a cash prize for the Youth (under 18) player with the best win-loss record, which was divided among three Youth who went undefeated!

Open Section 3-game winner:
Alex Xinlei Liu 7 dan

Handicap Section 3-game winners:
Yao Zhihong (2 dan)
Chen Xiangnan (3 kyu)
Frank Brown (6 kyu)
Lucas Wu Lu (9 kyu)
George Schmitten (9 kyu)
Yulissa Wu Lu (10 kyu)
Amy Ling (15 kyu)

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: MORE Invasions!

Everyone seems really into "invasions" this time around, so let's do more! Last week we looked at several types of invasions on the side of the board. Tomorrow, I want us to take a more practical look at finding the "right" response to both reasonable and unreasonable invasions. Don't miss out!

[Seattle Go Center] Hurry Curry switching to Thursdays

Hello fellow Go fans,

Seattle Go Center provides some support -- boards, stones, volunteers -- to a few meet-ups around the Seattle area.  The one at Hurry Curry of Tokyo has been going on Mondays for a few years now.  But the principal volunteer host there, Daniel Top, is having reduced availability; and attendance has been low for a while.  So we're going to try meeting there on Thursdays. If you work in the South Lake Union area, stop in for a game some Thursday; and please spread the word to your coworkers!

See you at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

email: programs@SeattleGo.org
web: www.SeattleGo.org
Go Center phone: 206-545-1424

PS - I'm sitting with Go players in Tacoma, trying to come up with Go jokes. They keep asking me "Where are you going with this?"

[Seattle Go Center] "Go Terms" book back in stock!

Dear Members,

We have gotten a second shipment of Chihyung Nam’s new book, “Go Terms”.  Copies are available in our book and equipment shop for $25, including tax.  This is a great book for Seattle Go Center players, since it compares Go terms across four languages: English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean.   The book is organized for English readers, with explanations in English, and diagrams, and the corresponding Asian words, along with their Romanized versions.  There are tables in the back of the book to help Japanese, Chinese and Korean speakers find corresponding terms in English.

Readers will find that many Japanese terms are listed in the English columns as well, such as komi, sente and hane.  In other situations, Ms. Nam suggests using English terms, which would make the game more understandable to beginners who speak English.  So she uses “corner pattern” for joseki,  and “play elsewhere” for tenuki.   Often there is not an exact match across all four languages. The entry on “Continuous atari” includes a comparison of 7 Asian terms, including the Japanese oiotoshi, and the Korean chokchoksu.

Chihyung Nam was one of the first female pros in Korea, and she is a good friend of the Seattle Go Center.  She is a professor at the Buduk Studies program at Myungji University, and has represented Korea at several international conferences on unifying Go rules. Her earlier book, “Contemporary Go Terms”, went out of print a long time ago, when Oromedia Publishing closed.  We are very happy that she has thoroughly rewritten her book, and found a new publisher.

Cheers,

Brian
