[Seattle Go Center] AI Wed.; Advanced canceled Thu.; Advanced registration online

Hello again Go fans,

I have a plethora of items to bring to your attention today. Regarding classes:

Today (Wednesday) is the third "Computer Go Programming" session. If you have some interest in hands-on application
of Deep Learning principles in Artificial Intelligence, join Eric and Drew at 6:00 PM -- it's not too late.

Tomorrow's "Advanced Go" class is ***canceled*** because I didn't get a registration form online in time for you eager
learners to sign up, for which I apologize. The good news is that the form *is* online now, so you can register for next
week! www.seattlego.org/advanced-go-feb-2019/ (And there's a paper signup sheet on the reception desk.)
The class needs six students (or more) at each session, so bring your Go friends and frenemies too! If the $25 tuition
presents an obstacle, please talk to me about a scholarship; the application process is not difficult at all.

Tomorrow's "Complete Beginners" class with Larry will be 6:30-8:30 PM. Bring your friends who should be playing Go,
but never got around to trying it! There's no cost for their first ten visits.

Regarding weekly outreach events:

Today (Wednesday), 6:00-8:00 PM, Go and casual instruction at Uwajimaya (in the food court).

Thursday has Go in two places:
- 4:00-9:00 PM, Couth Buzzard Cafe and Bookshop has Go, and instruction for beginners.
- 5:30-8:00 PM, find Go opponents and instructors at Hurry Curry restaurant in South Lake Union

Friday also has Go at two venues:
- Zoka Coffee (Greenlake), 9 AM - 12 noon
- Panera Bread (Kent Street Station), 5:30-7:30 PM (only the 1st Friday of the month)

Not really "outreach", but:
Saturdays in Bellevue, 1:00-5:00 PM, Go players meet at:
Kin On/ASCF Community Center Go Club
15921 NE 8th St, C-206, Bellevue WA 98008; first visit is free.

Tournament:

The monthly AGA ratings tournament will be Sunday! Register in person, 10:00-10:45 AM; first round starts at 11:00.

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] Req. for volunteers

Greetings, great Go volunteers!

Yes, that's you.  You and your hard work make it possible for the Center to keep GOing!

The Go Center has a few tasks for which we'd be greatly appreciative of some additional help:

- Help organize the Japanese language books in the Go Center library.  (This will be easier if you can read Japanese!)
- Help test the game clocks.  We have four different models of electronic game clocks, and some of them have interesting features (i.e., malfunctions).  For one person, it would take days to properly test and label the clocks; but I think a work party of 5 or 6 could knock it out in a couple of hours.  The byo-yomi you save may be your own!
- Trim back the ivy in the parking lot.  If you'd like a light upper body workout, this one's for you!

High school Go players, this can count toward your community service requirement.

See you sweating at the Go Center soon,

Mike Malveaux

[Seattle Go Center] Bread today; tournament Sunday

Hello fellow Go folks,

Open today
The Go Center is open today until 10 PM. Join us at the Go Center for "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"! Open 1:00 PM - 10:00 PM, with instruction for beginners after 3:00, and freshly-baked bread to share sometime after 5:00.
[I've gotten feedback that the above copy-'n'-pasted announcement has gotten stale -- unlike Chris' bread; and I've had one submission for a rather more dramatic rendition. What do you think -- should I spice it up? If yes, send your text -- keep it PG13 or tamer -- and I'll either pick the one that makes me giggle the most, or maybe I'll pick one at random.]

Tournament time!
Sunday Feb. 3 is the first Sunday of the month. Come play in the free monthly ratings tournament!
It's a great way to test yourself with intense, fun, face-to-face Go. No charge to play, but up-to-date AGA membership is required (see http://www.usgo.org/join-now for info), and Go Center admissions policies apply (see https://www.seattlego.org/membership/ for details).
Register in person, 10:00 - 10:45 AM. If you're running late, let the Tournament Director know (206-545-1424), and you can probably be paired into the first round. (If you call in, your clock starts 10 min. into the 1st round; and if you're not present after 30 min., you forfeit. If you come before 12:30, you can probably play in the 2nd round.)
First round starts at 11:00 AM. Second round starts by 1:30 PM, but may start sooner. You do not have play all three rounds - just be sure to tell the Tournament Director your plans.

See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday: Robots Aren't Human

Hey Go Fans-
During tomorrow's DDK class we will review one of my own recent league games. I reviewed my own play using the ELF Go AI, but also had it reviewed by In-seong Hwang 8p. The differences in evaluations and values between the robot and the human are stark. Come find out what I've learned!

[Seattle Go Center] Saturday: Shogi

Hello Go folks,

Friday the Go Center is closed, but in the afternoon we're having a discussion and training about response to people in crisis, and about the AGA Code of Conduct. All are welcome to attend, especially Go Center directors, day managers, and teachers. (We will record it for those who can't attend.)
Longer description: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/seattlego/S3tqj41lB7E
We'll start at 3:30 PM, and probably finish by 5:00 or 5:30.

Saturday, the Go Center is open 1:00-8:00 PM. It is the 3rd Saturday of the month, which means it's time for the monthly Shogi meetup! If you're curious about this Japanese version of Chess, "the Generals Game", come to the Go Center between 1:00 and 5:00 PM. Brandon volunteers his time to instruct beginners, and teaching sets designed to make a gentle on-ramp to Shogi. This has been a popular and growing monthly event, with a half dozen or more Shogi players (and Go players interested in Shogi).

See you soon at the Go Center,

Mike Malveaux
Seattle Go Center Programs Manager

PS - Fun fact -- Tokugawa, the Go enthusiast who became Japan's first shogun and established government funding for Go players in the 1600s, also was an avid player of Shogi, and established government funding for Shogi players too.

Beginners
Thursday, the Go Center is open 2 PM - 9 PM for casual play.  Day manager Michael Brown is often available to teach beginners, and Larry Eclipse has regularly scheduled "Complete Beginner" classes, 6:30-8:30 PM.  Larry helps beginners understand the rules and begin to apply simple tactics in their games.  Highly recommended for complete beginners! These are free of charge, aside from Go Center attendance.  (First ten visits free!)

Advanced
New this Thursday is Yue Zhang's "Advanced Go" class for players in the 9 kyu - 6 dan range, 7:00 - 9:00 PM.  Yue will use a novel mixture of whole-class lectures, games, and AI-augmented game reviews.  Yue's individualized form of teaching accelerate the learning curve!
About Yue Zhang: Currently rated 7.7 in the AGA, Yue placed 1st in the 2016 Seattle Anniversary Open and the 2018 Spring Open. Yue holds a PhD in paleontology from Ohio State University, and he has extensive college teaching experience.
Tuition for this class is $25 per two-hour session for non-members and daily members (with the usual Go Center admission charge waived), or $20 per session for youth (17 and younger) and voting members (quarterly, annual, and lifetime members).  Partial scholarships are available for this class — please contact Mike Malveaux <programs@SeattleGo.org> if the tuition would be a barrier for you.  We want all Go players willing to work hard to improve, to be able to take advantage of this amazing opportunity, so don't be shy -- give it a try!  As an experiment, we are not requiring advance sign-up for this class.

[Seattle Go Center] Jin Chen tournament results

Greetings Go folks,

The 10th Jin Chen tournament was Sunday, Jan. 6.  We had 22 players in the Handicap section, and 8 players in the Open section, including Jonathan Hop, a Go teacher and friend of Jin Chen.  Jonathan brought a touching book by Jin Chen's father, photos and reminiscences, and later presented two copies to the Go Center.  They are in the Go Center Library.

Liang Guangqiu (5d) was 3-0 in the Open section.  In the Handicap section, Brian Dai (7k) and Alejandro Jimenez (7) also were undefeated, with 3-0 records, garnering them each a $50 prize.  Brian also took home the Youth prize, awarded to the Youth player with the best performance.

[Seattle Go Center] Fri.: Crisis Response Training & Discussion

Hello Go people,

This Friday, Jan. 18 at 3:30 PM, we are having a community gathering to talk and get some information about behavior
issues at and near the Go Center. A few months ago, the AGA instituted a code of conduct (see
http://www.usgo.org/aga-code-conduct ), which the Go Center is also considering adopting.

We don't see much of the behavior the code addresses, but in recent months there have been a few incidents at the Go
Center that raised some concern about the degree to which the social environment here feels receptive, comfortable, and
safe. These incidents usually involve people who are clearly distressed in one way or another, either chronically, or in
response to some difficult life event.

Seattle Police Department Community Relations Officer Mary Bergen will present information about how to deal with
behavior issues that arise in our neighborhood, and Chris Kirschner, who had a hand in writing it and has a background
in crisis intervention, will talk about the AGA code. All are welcome to attend. We will also talk about what staff can and
will try to do when such issues arise. Staff will have an extended discussion about managing people whose behavior
arouses concern.

Pertinent documents are posted on our website: https://www.seattlego.org/crisis-response-docs/

[Seattle Go Center] Open today; Computers & Basics tomorrow

Hi Go folks,

The Go Center is open. John is teaching, and Chris is baking. Come join us for "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"!

Tomorrow, Eric and Drew will kick off the new Programming Computer Go sessions, Wednesdays 6 PM - 7 PM, structured around "Deep Learning and the Game of Go" -- https://www.manning.com/books/deep-learning-and-the-game-of-go (use coupon code "buildbot40" for a 40% discount, before Jan. 31). Other resources -- https://forums.manning.com/forums/deep-learning-and-the-game-of-go (a forum about the book) and https://github.com/maxpumperla/deep_learning_and_the_game_of_go (a Github from one of the authors).

After the Computer Go session, attend Drew's Go Basics lectures. Over several weeks, starting from first principles, Drew builds toward a SDK understanding of the fundamentals of Go. A good class for relatively new players, and perhaps for computer programmers who haven't yet played much Go, this should nicely complement the Computer Go sessions.

There's no charge for these, and the Go Center's membership policies apply: first 10 visits free; after that, there are membership options to choose from: https://www.seattlego.org/membership/

[Seattle Go Center] DDK Monday Returns: Discovering Andrew Jackson

Hey Go Fans!
Tomorrow evening will be our first Double-Digit Kyu Class of 2019! It will be an extra special one with Andrew Jackson stopping by to play some exhibition Hidden-Move Go games! If you haven't seen us play Hidden-Move Go before, you are in for a real treat, as the audience often knows more about what's going on in the game than the players do! See one of our previous matches here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm6wBpBPQdU

One other note: the following week (1/21) will have no class due to MLK day. But we will resume our classes as normal (and sadly, without Andrew Jackson) on the 28th.

[Seattle Go Center] Too much to summarize (2nd Sat Speed canceled; OrcaCon; Crisis Training; classes starting; Jin Chen report; and I didn't even mention the Board meeting Jan. 28)

Hello Go Folks,

A few things to mention!
- Second Sat. Speed League skips Jan.
- OrcaCon outreach this Fri., Sat., and Sun.
- Crisis Response talk + training next Fri.
- Classes next week
- Jin Chen tournament report

Second Saturday Speed League canceled this weekend
Sorry Speed Leaguers, I'll be in Bellevue (see below). We'll try again in February. (And maybe let's set up someone else who can step in to TD?) The Go Center will be open Saturday as usual, 1 PM - 8 PM.

OrcaCon this weekend
OrcaCon is a tabletop games convention in Bellevue. This is the fourth year it's running. The Go Center has a table at the OrcaCon Community Row where we'll be teaching new people how to play the oldest (and I'd argue best) game! Community Row is open 10 AM - 6 PM, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I still have volunteer slots to fill, so email programs@seattlego.org to volunteer! You get to meet interesting people and teach them the world's most interesting game. What could be better? (You also get to wander around and check out all the *other* cool games, too.)
We also have slots in the Demo Zone, Friday 6 PM - 9 PM and Saturday 7 PM - 10 PM. And the convention runs 24 hours a day; so if you're up for it, you could go on a real tabletop gaming binge!

Crisis Response Training and Discussion, Friday Jan. 18, 3:30-5:30 PM
We are having a community gathering to talk and get some information about behavior issues at and around the Go Center. A few months ago, the AGA instituted a code of conduct (see http://www.usgo.org/aga-code-conduct ), which the Go Center is also considering adopting.
We don't see much of the behavior the code addresses, but in recent months there have been a few incidents at the Go Center, which have raised some concern about the degree to which the social environment here feels receptive, comfortable, and safe.
Seattle Police Department Community Relations Officer Mary Bergen will present information about how to deal with behavior issues that arise in our neighborhood, and Chris Kirschner, who had a hand in writing it and has a background in crisis intervention, will talk about the AGA code. All are welcome to attend. We will also talk about what staff can and will try to do when such issues arise. Staff will have an extended discussion about managing people whose behavior arouses concern.
Pertinent documents are posted on our website: https://www.seattlego.org/crisis-response-docs/

Classes next week
After the holiday break, old classes are resuming and new ones are starting up!
Mon., 6:30-8:30, DDK with Nick Sibicky;
Tue., 3:30-8:00, Beginners with John Boy Richards (not so much a class as a series of tutoring sessions);
Wed., 6:00-7:00, Programming Computer Go with Eric Downes and Drew Barnett (times may get adjusted);
Wed., 7:00-8:30, Go Basics with Drew Barnett (times may get adjusted);
Thu., 6:30-8:30, Complete Beginners with Larry Eclipse;
Thu., 7:00-9:00, Advanced Go with Zhang Yue ($25/session or $20 for youth / voting members; partial scholarships available) -- 9k through 6d.
There's some detail about these on the website, at https://www.seattlego.org/2019/01/02/new-and-familiar-classes-starting-jan-2019/ (and I'll post a bit next week, too).

Jin Chen Tournament Report
Sunday Jan. 6, we held the 10th Jin Chen tournament. We had 22 players in the Handicap section, and 8 in the Open section. We also had a gift from Jin Chen's father, brought by Johathan Hop -- a compilation of photos and reminiscences about Jin. It will be on the Go Center library shelves soon.
The Open section (and its $300 prize) was won by Liang Guangqiu, in a tense byo-yomi battle with Zhang Yue. In the Handicap section there were two players who won all three of their games: Brian Dai (7k) and Alejandro Jimenez (8k). Brian Dai also won the Youth prize, which goes to the under-18 player with the best result and the highest entry rating.

6-dan visiting Re: [Seattle Go Center] Open today; no Kent Fri.; Jin Chen Sun.; HNY!

Hello everyone,

Two things I forgot -- Brandon is here with even more Shogi stuff -- books from his collection, etc. So if you want to try Shogi, today's a good day for it!

Also, Chris is here, baking bread. Trader Joe's was closed, but I got some cold cuts from QFC. So if you're not out snowboarding, come to the Go Center for "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"! And for an informal New Year's party, which I'll define as starting at 5:00, though folks are already breaking into the chips. :-)

And, this just in -- a young 6-dan visiting from Korea just arrived; so any strong players who'd like to play an aspiring pro might like to come in. I think he'll be here for a few hours at least.

See you soon at the Go Center,

Happy New Year, Go folks!

The Go Center will be open today, 1 PM - 10 PM; and what better way to start the new year, than with a game of Go? (My apologies to those who volunteered to organize a festive New Year's party -- I dropped the ball there. But we will have sparkling cider and light snacks!)

Kent "First Friday" canceled this month
The monthly Go meetup at Panera Bread at Kent Station is canceled for January; but should run as usual February 1 at 5:30 PM.

Jin Chen Tournament on Sunday!
The Jin Chen tournament, Seattle's largest annual tournament, will be this Sunday, Jan. 6! Register in person, 10:00 - 10:30 AM. For full details, see the events calendar - https://www.seattlego.org/events/ - or the email group archive - https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/seattlego - or the repeat announcement I'll be sending out in a couple of days.

PS - I have this nagging feeling that I'm forgetting something, so there'll probably be another email or two soon -- sorry!
