Hello Go fans,
Closed 5-27
The Go Center will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, and Nick Sibicky's DDK class is canceled that day. The DDK class will resume Monday, June 10 at 6:30 PM. If you want to study Memorial Day, check out some of Nick's previous lectures:
https://www.youtube.com/NickSibicky
Lost & Found
If you left a USB battery pack at the Go Center last week, it's locked up in the office. Describe it to Mike (on Tuesdays) or Dennis (on Wednesdays or Saturdays) to claim it.
Ratings Tournament June 2
The Go Center's free monthly AGA ratings tournament will be Sunday, June 2. This is a great way to get in some intense face-to-face games. Register on-site, 10:00-10:45 AM; and the first round begins at 11:00 AM. No cost to play, but your AGA membership should be up-to-date (see https://www.usgo.org/join-aga-today for AGA membership info) and Go Center admission policies apply (first 10 visits free; after that, select the membership option https://www.seattlego.org/membership/ that works best for you). Full details are on the Go Center calendar: https://www.seattlego.org/events/
Board Meeting June 3
The Board of Directors will meet at Seattle Go Center on Monday, June 3, 6:30-7:30 PM.
Rengo
Our annual Rengo shindig will be Saturday, June 8. (If you're wondering "What is Rengo?", it's a kind of team Go, where a team of two players faces off against another pair of players; and it's a *lot* of fun!) If you want to play but don't have a partner, that's ok -- we'll be forming teams at the event. $10 per player (or $5 for youth 17 or younger, and for Go Center voting members) gains entry to the tournament, plus decadent dessert and a chance to win prizes: books on Go! Register 5:30-6:00 PM. The first round begins a few minutes after 6:00, and we're generally done about 10:00 PM.
Japan Fair
Our Go outreach program is going strong. We reached hundreds of new players at Sakura-Con and Cherry Blossom Festival in April, and another 150+ at the U District Street Fair this past weekend. Next up is Japan Fair at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue: http://japanfairus.org/
We will have volunteers staffing our table Saturday, June 29th 10:00am - 6:00pm and Sunday, June 30th 10:00am - 5:00pm. (If you'd like to help volunteer, please reply to this email and let me know.) There will be lots of Japanese food, cultural exhibits, and demonstrations. Unfortunately, there will be no free parking this year; but there will be on-site and nearby paid parking, and the venue is a short walk from the Bellevue transit center.
Fundraising & Plumbing
We are close to the $8000 needed to replenish the "rainy day" fund we had to expend on emergency plumbing repairs. (I still think it should be called the "snowy day" fund, because the problem happened during Snowmaggedon.) That's counting both monies the Go Center has already received, and funds that have been pledged but not yet received. But a new plumbing problem has appeared over the weekend -- which is why one of the bathrooms is marked "out of order". I'm not sure how serious it is -- Brian will have to evaluate it -- but we soon may be asking you to help replenish the fund again.
Thanks for your attention. See you soon at the Go Center,

[Seattle Go Center] No-host Shogi this Saturday
Hello fellow Go (and Shogi!) fans,
I'm relaying a message from Brandon, our Third Saturday Shogi Meetup maven. He won't be able to host the Shogi meetup tomorrow, due to a work emergency. But fear not -- he says, "The Shogi stuff is all still there under the coffee table if anyone wants to play casual games but all the regular members have said that they will not make it this time. So there will be no lessons."
He apologetically adds, "So sorry for the short notice about this!"

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo / Pair Go survey results
Hello fellow Go fans,
We recently had a survey about Pair Go / Rengo, and we got 22 response. The survey is now closed. Results:
(1) Timing - What time limits should the Go Center use for the Pair Go/Rengo tournaments? ...
54.5% 45 minutes per team, no overtime ("sudden death").
27.3% 30 minutes per team, overtime 3 x 30 seconds byo-yomi.
18.2% 45 minutes per team, overtime 1 x 10 seconds byo-yomi.
(2) Pair-Go Partners - How should the players in Pair Go be paired? The December tournament has used the International Pair Go rules -- one female and one male per team. Should that definition be expanded ... ?
9.1% Partners should be limited to male-female pairs (International Pair Go rules).
68.2% Partners should be limited to mixed-gender pairs, including transgender and non-binary people.
22.7% Partners should not be limited by gender.
The Go players have spoken, and Bill Thompson, our main Rengo / Pair Go TD, agrees.
- Time limits will remain at 45 minutes per team, sudden death.
- At the June 8 Rengo event, gender is irrelevant to team composition.
- At the December Pair Go event, teams will be composed of mixed-gender pairs, including transgender and non-binary people.
Thanks for participating. Watch for another survey coming soon, about how best to plan events when professional players are visiting.

[Seattle Go Center] Rengo - 4 Weeks
One double mission: Rengo and dessert!
Join us at Seattle Go Center on Saturday evening, June 8, for the annual Rengo tournament -- two exciting rounds of thrilling team Go!
"What is Rengo?" you may be asking. It's a pair of players playing against another pair of players. Each player takes turns taking turns; so you get to play half as many moves, but you arguably have twice the fun! (Plus decadent baked goods, and a chance to win prizes: books on Go!)
We will be following International Pair Go rules -- http://www.pairgo.or.jp/setumei/rule.htm -- but with no gender requirements on team composition. 45 minutes per team; no overtime. Bring a friend, or form a team at the event.
Register 5:30-6:00 PM. $10 per player to enter (just $5 per player for youth under 18, and for Go Center voting members) -- includes dessert! We will start Round 1 as soon as pairing is complete, about 6:00; and we generally finish Round 2 by 10:00 PM or earlier.
All strength levels and ages are welcome to participate. See you there!

[Seattle Go Center] Shogi Saturday - 1 Week
Saturday, the Go Center is open 1:00-8:00 PM. It is the 3rd Saturday of the month, which means it's time for the monthly Shogi meetup! If you're curious about this Japanese version of Chess, "the Generals Game", come to the Go Center between 1:00 and 5:00 PM. Brandon volunteers his time to instruct beginners, and teaching sets designed to make a gentle on-ramp to Shogi. This has been a popular and growing monthly event, with a half dozen or more Shogi players (and Go players interested in Shogi).

[Seattle Go Center] Give Little to the Seattle Go Center
Hi All,
We are very close to replenishing our Rainy Day Fund, after the sewer repairs/upgrade. We only need $475 more to reach our $8800 goal. Thanks to everybody who has helped so far! Of course we welcome more donations, including small ones. Do your part to prevent pay toilets at the Go Center!

[Seattle Go Center] Spring tournament results
Hello Go fans,
The Spring Tournament on Sunday, May 5th had 30 participants -- 22 in the Handicap section, and 8 in the Open section.
Yue Zhang 7d swept the Open section, winning all three of his games (and the $150 prize), which I believe marks the third time he's taken first place in a Seattle Open tournament. (2016 Anniversary Open, 2018 Spring Open, and now 2019 Spring Open.)
In the Handicap section, three-game winners were Brendan Roof 1k, Frank Brown 5k, Brian Dai 6k, George Schmitten 9k, and Zixuan Gao 13k; and they got to select a Go book from the prizes table. The two who are Youth players (17 or younger) also were awarded a special cash prize, with some generous assistance from Sonny Cho.
One encouraging fact: Three out of eight of the Open section players were Youth, as were half of the Handicap section players. So, keep helping with those outreach efforts -- it's having an effect.
Tournament direction was provided by Bill Chiles, with an assist from Daniel Top. AGA Chapter Representive Nick Wilmes helped with organizing the event, and pitched in with registration duties. Pizza lunch was included in the cost of registration, thanks to the AGA Chapter Rewards program. We gain Chapter Rewards points for every AGA member who affiliates themselves with the Seattle AGA Chapter (you can login to your AGA account and do that -- feel free to ask me to help with that, since it's a slightly tricky interface). We also gain points for every rated tournament game we report.
The next tournament with prizes will be the Anniversary Tournament -- probably October 6, but stay tuned for the latest information.

[Seattle Go Center] Rainy Day Fund Needs 25% More In Donations
Dear Go Center Members,
During this period of beautiful weather, let me remind you that our Rainy Day Fund still needs help. You may recall that we
spent our previous funds dealing with a sewer problem in February. The good news is that we have collected $4000 already,
and we are promised payments that will get us to the 75% mark. But we still need about $2200 to reach our $8800 goal.
Please consider donating, either at the Go Center, or online: https://www.seattlego.org/donate/rainy-day-fund/
Cheers,
Brian Allen
