Hello fellow Go fans,
I apologize for the late notice. Mr. Hirotaka Kuroki, from the Go equipment company Kuroki GoIshiten https://www.kurokigoishi.co.jp/english/ is visiting the Seattle area. He and his friend, Ron Takata of Hawaii, have been on the Olympic Peninsula for a few days, and Tuesday they will be sightseeing in the Seattle area. They plan to visit the Go Center around 10 or 10:30 AM, so I will have the Go Center open early, at 10:00. Come on in to meet a Go equipment maker, and have some games!
See you soon at the Go Center,

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,
Tuesdays
The past three Tuesdays have been well attended, with 30+ players each week. Last night, we had 39, including five Youth, and six players having their first-ever visits to the Go Center. So, you can expect to see some new faces the next time you come on a Tuesday to "the largest weekly gathering of Go players in North America (possibly the Western Hemisphere)™"!
Go Congress
The US Go Congress starts this Saturday, June 13, and runs until June 20. Please join me in wishing the best of luck to Jon Boley, Frank Brown, Chris Kirschner, Chanseok Oh, Brendan Roof, Nick Sibicky, George Schmitten, Steve Stringfellow, Dennis Wheeler, and Nick Wilmes, and any other Seattle-area players who are going to the Go Congress!
The Go Center will be open the regular hours during the Congress. And we'll be having bagels next Tuesday, instead of Chris' excellent bread.
August 6, 5:00-6:30 PM
Tuesday August 6 will mark the 74th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb. As many of you know, but some may not, Japanese professional Go player Kaoru Iwamoto was challenging Utaro Hashimoto in for the Honinbo title that day, approximately three miles from where the bomb detonated.
Both players survived, and even continued playing the game to its conclusion. Iwamoto-sensei went on to win the title, help rebuild the Nihon Ki-in after World War II, and establish Go Centers around the world -- one of which is in Seattle.
To honor the memory of Iwamoto-sensei and to further realize his vision of peace and trans-cultural understanding through Go, volunteers from Seattle Go Center often participate in the annual "From Hirsoshima to Hope" commemoration at Green Lake Park, in a solemn replay of what has come to be known as the "Atomic Bomb Go Game" (a portion of which is on the outside wall of the Go Center).
We begin about 5:00 PM, and finish before 6:30 (when the other events and speeches are getting underway). There will be art exhibits, music, and finally, at 8:15, a floating lantern ceremony.
If you'd like to volunteer to help replay the game, please email programs@SeattleGo.org

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,
Today 6:30-8:30 PM, Drew Barnett leads a class on Tewari (move order) analysis, aimed at the double-digit part of the kyu rating spectrum. Analyzing possible sequences of play with respect to the order in which moves will be played can help reveal the crucial points of a group, and it's exciting to see a relatively high-level concept being rendered practicable for newer players.
These Monday lectures primarily will be aimed at lower DDK-strength players, but of course upper DDK players are more than welcome. That said, some of these lectures are specifically aimed at players of 19x19 boards only, so if you are a DDK player who still plays mostly or entirely on smaller boards, those lectures may naturally be of less value to you. Thematically, later lectures will build off of some of the ideas of earlier lectures, but material is divided up in such a way as to make each unit individually digestible, and attending every week is by no means necessary to get something out of them.
On an unrelated note (except to the degree that our collective desire for more DDK players is related), the Go Center needs a few more volunteers to introduce Go at the annual Bon Odori festival:
It will be at Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple, 1427 S. Main St., Seattle WA 98144 in the temple gymnasium. The festival has traditional Japanese folk dancing in the street, cultural exhibits, and lots of great food! Parking is limited, so consider carpooling or public transit. More festival info: https://seattlebetsuin.com/bon-odori-festival/
Please don't feel that you don't know Go well enough to teach it to new players. The main thing beginners need is the ability to recognize when groups are captured -- more abstract considerations like fuseki theory and tewari analysis can come later; and teaching someone else is a great way to solidify your own understanding. Please email programs@SeattleGo.org to volunteer (by Tuesday July 9 if you want an official nametag -- I have to submit the list of volunteers Wednesday). Thank you!
See you soon at the Go Center,

Hello fellow Go enthusiasts,
Just a brief reminder that the Go Center will be closed Wednesdays until September. And closed tomorrow, July 4th -- happy Independence Day! (And closed Friday, as usual.) The Go Center will be open Saturday, July 6, regular hours (1 PM - 8 PM) -- come on in for friendly games of Go.
Sunday, July 7, the Go Center will hold the monthly AGA ratings tournament. It's free to enter, and AGA membership is required: https://www.usgo.org/join-aga-today
This is a great way to experience the thrill of face-to-face competitive Go. The tournament is three rounds (but you don't have to play all rounds; just let the Tournament Director know your plans). Register on-site 10:00-10:45 AM. First round begins at 11:00. If you're running a little late, you can register by phone at 206-545-1424. If you skip the first round, you still can play in the later rounds. More details: https://www.seattlego.org/2019/04/11/monthly-tournaments-info/
