[Seattle Go Center] Looking for Voulnteers for Bellevue College Japan Week

Hello Go Members,

I am glad to announce that we will be returning to Bellevue College for their "Japan Week" event. This event will be held on September 24th from 10am-5pm, and I am looking for volunteers to help teach Go and promote our Center at it. Also I would appreciate having 1-2 extra sets of hands to help set up our booth the day before (September 23th) starting around 5pm (at Bellevue college). If you need a ride or like to carpool, let me know and we can meet at the Go center earlier.

Though the attendees of the event do not need to wear a mask to attend the event or our both, I do ask that our volunteers please bring a mask to wear to help lessen any spread.

The Bellevue College is located at 3000 Landerholm Cir SE, Bellevue, WA 98007, and we will be located at the C-block/Cafeteria. You can find a map of the campus at https://www.bellevuecollege.edu/location/maps/main/ and I have attached an image of where we will be.

If you have any more question or would like to volunteer, please feel free to email me at programs@seattlego.org

I wish you all the best and I hope we have a lovely return to this Japan
Week.

[Seattle Go Center] Seattle Go Center Looking for Operations Manager

The Seattle Go Center is looking for a part time Operations Manager, who can work 50-75 hours per month.  Very sadly, our interim operations manager is unable to remain in the position.  This position includes paying bills, doing payroll, filling out tax forms (CPAs help), doing light maintenance, supervising maintenance contracts, meeting and coordinating with the Board, etc.  This role was previously for 50 hours per month, but we want to expand the role to include creating and planning programs and other management tasks; hence the work could optionally be up to 75 hours per month. The Operations Manager should be familiar with and passionate about the game of Go, but they do not have to be a strong player.

If you are not interested, please consider friends or family who might have the right skill set and ability to not work a full-time job.  This is an important role for SGC.

If you are interested in the position, we will send you a full description of the role, pay, job requirements, and optional candidate attributes.  The Operations Manager will have use of a desk and computer in the Go Center office, and while some work can be done remotely, the Operations Manager is expected to be our "boots on the ground" onsite multiple days a week to check the property and take care of business.  The hours are pretty flexible.

The role is going to shift quite a bit in 2023 and a couple of years later.  You will be key in working with the Building Development Committee to find a temporary location for SGC during construction of our new building, and you will organize the move, including storage for SGC assets that don't move.  You will own moving back into our new space at the current location when the new building is ready.  After we move to an interim property, there are many things you would no longer need to manage (full property security, building and tenant insurance, elevator inspections, property taxes, etc.).

We will take applications at least until 16 SEP to give folks a chance to consider the role, and the personnel committee will begin interviewing as soon as we can schedule applicants on zoom (for convenience).  We hope to find a strong candidate before the end of SEP.

There will be support and help as you ramp up in the new role, but we also look for a candidate that has a good sense of self-starting who can work with directors on learning because past operations mangers may not be available for training.  There will be specific help for some tasks such as annual reporting, non-profit tax paperwork, payroll, expense reporting, etc.  There also is an operations manual for overview and some detailed how-to documents.

If you have any questions or want to discuss the role, please contact billchiles-gocenter@hotmail.com.

Thanks,

Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Please Consider SGC Survey -- 3 Questions Only

I would like to emphasize there is a very short survey in the weekly announcements and reminders.  We are looking at ways to revitalize SGC and member attendance/enjoyment after COVID has "plagued" us for two years.  The upcoming mask and eating policy changes are due to this effort.

We would appreciate hearing your thoughts that we hope the survey will capture, but you can also send mail if you like to operations@seattlego.org.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Reminders + COVID-19 Policy Updates, Girl's Only Go Night, Schedule change for SDK to Dan Level Lectures

Greeting Members,

I'd like to start with some special announcements:

Effective September 1st, 2022, masks will no longer be required for in person games at the SGC. However, we ask that if you are going to play a game with someone who is still wearing a mask, that as a courtesy you also wear one as you play with them. Either player is free to inform their opponent that the other does not have to wear one as well. By opting to wear a mask these individuals may be expressing that they would prefer to remain cautious about exposure to themselves and those close to them, and we ask you to respect that.

At that time, the SGC will return to allowing eating inside as before the implementation of COVID-19 precautions, but please remember the Code of Conduct and do not eat near Go equipment or in the tatami room.

We will continue to check for proof of vaccination through 2022.

If you can spare a few minutes, please take this survey which includes questions about Fall 2022 COVID-19 Precautions

[Seattle Go Center] Our cherished friend, John Richards, has passed away

Dear members,

We have received the sad news that our long-time member and teacher John Richards (“JahnBoi”) passed away peaceably and comfortably at Harborview Medical Center on Sunday, Aug. 7th. He was 80 years old.

John had been hospitalized in mid-March with kidney problems. There, he also had surgery for his recurring back problems. He was in convalescent settings until late July, when he returned to the hospital with respiratory issues. We will miss him greatly.

John would often say that he found his calling in life in his 60s, teaching Go. He was an outgoing and enthusiastic teacher of beginners at the Go Center and also held court at the Couth Buzzard Bookstore and Café on Thursday evenings. He enjoyed being silly with children, and was quick to make friends with all. Many of our new players got their start with John.

In the days before COVID, John was also a mainstay of our outreach efforts, putting in marathon hours of teaching and playing at Sakura Con, the Cherry Blossom Festival, University Street Fair, Japan Fair, and the Bon Odori festival.

We are happy that John was able to come to the Go Center regularly throughout the fall of last year. His conversations were funny and wide-ranging.

If you would like information on the memorial expected to be held by his family and friends in the coming weeks, or the remembrance we would like to have at the SGC, please reach out to us for details.

Here are just a few of our favorite “JahnBoi-isms”, always said in a friendly tone:

- "That's it, you/I forfeit!" after someone knocked stones out of place, inadvertently cheated, or was late...all while almost always playing to the dogged end.

- "Wait! Don’t you know the rules? You can’t beat Sensei!”

- "That's a good move...but this one's better!"

- "SAN-SAAAAN!" Gleefully cheered accompanying a 3-3 invasion.

If you have memories with John or condolences you'd like to share for posting on our website, please send them in a reply e-mail.
