[Seattle Go Center] Quickie Reminders, Especially Kids Time and Anniversary

First, a big thanks to those that donated, bought lifetime memberships and renewed membership.  If you were thinking of donating, please do so.  We won't mention fundraising again until the spring time.

Second, we no longer require proof of vaccination or mask wearing, but if your opponent is wearing a mask, be respectful and wear one too.

We have Kids Time Sundays 3-6pm, first session meeting today.  It will meet every Sunday except the first Sunday of the month.

Next Saturday 22 OCT at 9am we will begin registration for the Anniversary Tournament with an open section and handicap section and prizes.  Competitors need to wear masks while playing.  Following the tournament at 6pm we will have an Anniversary Party with food, and you can bring alcohol to celebrate (we have a license for that at this event).  Please have your AGA membership up to date because we cannot pair you if it is expired.

We have Tuesday open Go play from 3-9pm, and a Zoom gathering at 6:30, https://zoom.us/j/99377436701.  We were the long standing largest weekly gathering of Go players in the US, and last Tue looked like we were returning to that claim.  Its great to see people showing up to play in person and to chat with more folks.

Next month we'll have the regular ratings tournament, Womens+ Night, Kids Time, and more events.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Announcing NEW Kids' Time -- 16 OCT, "Every" Sun 3-6pm +

We're announcing a new program to try to attract more kids to Go.  Thanks to the families that provided input.  We are struggling to find teachers who can take time off to go to schools for after school programs and the like.  It has always been a struggle, but still in the wake of covid, it is more difficult.  We're hoping bringing kids to SGC where we can focus the few volunteers, we can create a fun and learning environment for kids playing Go.  If it catches on, kids bring friends, etc., we can have little tournaments or league play or team tournaments for fun, and so on.

FOR NOW, we're starting with every Sun at 3pm (see exceptions), ostensibly ending at 6pm or when the person with the key needs to leave.  However, the first Sun of the month is our ratings tournament, so there won't be a Kids' Time 06 NOV.  Also, Womens+ Night is the second Sun of the month, so we need to ask families to be done by 6pm (well, the male-identified anyway 🙂).

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS, please.  River will be there to help teach and review some play, and I can be there some too.  However, if two others who enjoy spreading Go and helping kids learn would please also come on Sun, 3-6, that would be very much appreciated.

PARENTS, please give feedback on how to make it better and more engaging for the kids.  Should we have some snack and juice boxes, or as time goes buy, and you hear from your kids, please let us now how to make Kids' Time better.

Cheers,
bill

[Seattle Go Center] Reminder: Fund Raising and Anniversary Tournament and Party 22 OCT

Please attend the Anniversary Tournament and/or Party.  We are looking forward to seeing old and new faces.  Because there will be prize money and other prizes at the tournament (for open strong players division and our usual handicapped division), entrance fees will be $20 for non-voting members, $10 for voting members, and $5 for children.  Attending the party or spectating at the tournament are free.  Registration for the tournament is 9-9:45am (an hour earlier than usual).  We will require mask wearing by participants while they are playing tournament games in accordance with AGA guidelines.

There will be food at the party, and we have a banquet license for BYOB.  SGC may provide some alcohol, but please bring what you like and some to share.

Lastly, thanks to everyone who donated last week.  There were some generous donations, but everything is very much appreciated.  Please donate or purchase/renew a voting membership (annual or lifetime).

Thanks,

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Needs to do Fundraising -- Please Help

Hey, all, we have not raised funds for a year now.  That's partially due to all the changes in management, but also, we were very lucky to get two big donations that literally kept the lights on for us in the DEC-MAR timeframe.  We need to raise money to maintain our public charity status because without clear member support, we can lose this prized status that allows for tax breaks on donations, corporate matching, and DAF donations.

This fall we are focusing the fundraising on a membership drive and upgrading our ancient, very slow computer system.  Memberships help us in a couple of ways, so please consider buying a voting membership or renewing (annual, $250, or lifetime, $3000).  Lifetime memberships are tax deductible and corporations can match up to $2750.  We have not raised membership prices in 15-20 years, and we expect to raise prices soon.  Our computer system is very old and slow (no idea how past operation managers didn't throw things at board members for this reason alone ðŸ™‚).  We also increasingly need two computers (PCs) instead of one and will continue to nurse the old computer into service.  We would like to raise $2000 for a new desktop PC, monitors, and peripherals.  We also want to experiment with some new software and a more recent Quickbooks.  We are open to donations of beefy desktops also.

Please consider renewing or buying a voting membership, and please try to help us out with donations to help us maintain our public charity status and buy some much needed upgrades to our systems.

You can donate in person when you come to SGC to enjoy some Go playing or here (found at seattlego.org, see the left nav bar for "Donate", and there is a button at the bottom of the page to use Paypal).

Thanks,
bill
