Hello Go Players

We are glad to announce our upcoming Anniversary Tournament on November 5th (note DST change, see below).  We will have both and open (all even games) and handicap tournament. The open tournament is for the 8 strongest players and will have a cash prize of $150 for the player winning 3 games.  Our handicap tournament will also have some cash prizes for those who win 3 games (or divided over those who win 2 games if no one wins 3).  There is also our usual kids prize of $25 for the person under 18 years old who wins the most games (playing with a higher ranks break ties).  We will provide pizza for lunch, see below.

We will provide free pizza for lunch.  A big thanks to the AGA for helping provide pizza for our tournament.  We will count how many slices people want before the first round (cheese or pepperoni), and we will have the pizza delivered around noon.

We hope to see a lot of people join us for our traditional anniversary tournament.

[Seattle Go Center] Trouble from Actions at the Old SGC Site

Unfortunately, someone glued a banner onto our iconic Atomic Bomb Game that says we moved.  This is troublesome for SGC.  In addition to impacting or relationship with the current owners, we were in the middle of negotiating with them and community volunteers (labor and genie high lift operator) to salvage the iconic sign.  That may not be possible now.

If you know who did this, we do not need to know who it was, but please convey to them the importance of coordinating with SGC on any public actions in our name.  They may not see the whole-board game from their perspective.  We could have gotten permission from the owners to place a "we moved" sign (and not on the historic Atomic Bomb Game sign).  We had similar permissions before.

Thank you,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Lifetime Members -- Please Reach Out

Hailing all Lifetime Members, check one two, is this mic on? 😊.  SGC of course has a list of lifetime members, but as we have been improving our bookkeeping and records keeping in various ways, we'd like to ensure we can contact lifetime members.  At the risk of being grim, we would also like to confirm who is still with us on the mortal plane, regardless of whether you live very far away.

To make it a bit easier for some of you, we do not need to hear from you if your first name follows here  -- Brian, Eric, Troy, Jon, Lee Anne, Frank, Solomon, Neal, Andrew, Chris, Brendan, George, or Lusha.

Thanks by helping and shooting a quick email if you're a lifetime member!!

[Seattle Go Center] Fund Raising and WA State Championship Announcement

Hello, Go community.  We have not had much response in the first two weeks of fundraising.  We really do need to raise money to have enough funds to operate and maintain our public charity status.  One of the best ways to help is to buy an annual membership, but also donating and having your company match the donation helps a lot.  I hope we will get close to our $11,000 success of last year, but we had good lifetime membership sales and corporate matching last year.  PLEASE DO HELP us if you're able to donate something or purchase a membership (annual and lifetime prices are still at 14-year low prices 😊).

WA STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Seattle AGA Chapter and Seattle Go Center will host the WA State Championship 09-10 DEC.  We are thinking we will hold the state championship every year on the second weekend in DEC.  There will be more information to follow on admission fees, who can legally win cash prizes, who can be state champion according to AGA rules, etc.  We may cancel the monthly handicap tournament on the first weekend of DEC in lieu of the state championship first three rounds.

Don't forget 05 NOV we will have the Anniversary Tournament with cash prizes and a strong players open section.

Cheers,
Bill

Re: [Seattle Go Center] Need Saturday Crossroads Host Volunteer(s)

Hey, Rainer.  I totally get every weekend being a burden, I don't even go to SGC every Tue 😊  Let's see if we a few people, and maybe folks can do it like once a month in rotation or something.

So, far no one else has replied.  We may just have to say the meetup is happening, people can show up without a host, but people will need to self-organize to bring boards.  Other meetups work that way, people just bring folding boards or whatnot.

Cheers,
Bill

Hi Bill,

I live on the Eastside and would like to help. But I don't think I can commit to doing it every Saturday.

We have a couple of Go boards and stones that the meetup can use, so whoever hosts the meetup just needs to coordinate who is hosting each week and make sure they have the equipment to bring.  Some attendees also bring equipment to ensure there are enough boards.

If you can help host or take over hosting for Emma, please let us know.  If you can't do it every week, but there is some consistency to when you host, we could work with that as long as we can keep attendees informed when the meetup will occur.  Attendees may still show up with their own equipment and play if the meetup has good momentum.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Need Saturday Crossroads Host Volunteer(s)

[Seattle Go Center] Goban Raffle, Fund Raising, and Memberships

Hello, Go community.  TLDR: please consider donating to help us stay open and maintain our non-profit status, and/or please consider buying an annual membership or lifetime membership.  We have not raised fees in 14 years, and we need to do so now.  We do not police our doorway or hassle folks about proving membership or paying fees, but we do need this income to survive.  We are also raffling off a true kaya, old, floor goban to help raise money.

We have not done any fundraising for a year.  We skipped the spring fundraising, waiting to break ground and move to a temporary space, but as you know, plans suddenly changedThe 2022 fund raising was VERY successful, raising about $11,000.  We combined that with a voting membership drive, a great way to give to Seattle Go Center (and never bother with entrance fees).

We need to raise 1/3 of our operating costs from member support (memberships, admission fees, retail, and donations) to preserve our public charity status.  We also need to stretch the Iwamoto Go Outreach Foundation funds for decades to come so that they can support SGC.  We no longer have a downstairs to rent.

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING OR PURCHASING A VOTING MEMBERSHIP
We are starting a new policy as an experiment.  If you purchase 12 annual memberships within 14 years, you can convert your membership to lifetime. I will note that if you work for a company that matches donations, and you buy a lifetime membership at one time, your company can match $2750 of the price as an additional donation.

FEES.  Last year we said that we were going to raise prices after 13 years, but now we really need to make adjustments.  The new rates start 03 OCT.  The annual voting membership price is not changing, nor are any student prices.  However, the day use fee will become $10, and the 10-punch card will become $50.  See the website for other prices such as some lifetime memberships and pair memberships.

PLEASE NOTE, we do not police our doorway.  We do not accost people to show their annual membership is valid or prove you punched your 10-punch card or that you paid a day use fee.  We are on the honor system which we feel is consistent with our mission to spread cultural awareness and promote and teach Go.  However, memberships and admission fees are important dollars for our public charity test and demonstrating member support.  Please support us by paying attention and paying fees, purchasing 10-punch cards, or memberships.

RAFFLE.  We will raffle a floor board.  Tickets are $20.  We have a goal to sell at least 100 tickets.  The goban will be on display at SGC starting 03 OCT.  We will draw the winning ticket by Thanksgiving.  This goban (see Seattle Go Facebook page for pictures) is true kaya from Japan, which you can only get these days when they find an already fallen tree.  It was passed down father to son, and when the son passed, a family friend donated it to Seattle Go Center.  It has some Japanese writing on the bottom noting its history.  It has some blemishes that add to its character, age, and history.  It is the second highest quality of cut from the tree that produces straight lines on the top from the tree grain.  It also has some grain patter from the very center of the tree that some prefer to the highest quality cut that is all straight grain.  It should be used and have a good home, so please help SGC and buy some tickets.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] SGC Re-opening Party and Other Events

First, let me say I am sorry the last two weeks we have put out 3-4 message a week, and we try to have only 1-2 at most.  I hope you forgive us and understand a lot has been happening lately as we re-open and get back to having fun with Go.  There will be one more after this and maybe no more next week 🙂.

RE-OPENING PARTY is Tuesday 03 OCT.  We want to celebrate a speedy re-opening, and we're grateful for the good turn outs so far.  River and Kyle are organizing a little lightning/blitz tournament for anyone who wants to participate (no AGA membership required, not rated).  We will have some food (lots of Chris's fresh bread and fixins for sandwiches) and drinks out from 6:00 onward.  We will get a banquet license for BYOB and provide a little nihonshu and beer (Ridgewood Bottle and Tap is "across the street" if you want to bring something, conveniently on your way from the parking lot).

It will be fun to see lots of folks, maybe some old timers will show up for reconnecting, and we'll continue to attract new folks (so far so good at the new location).

OTHER EVENTS/MEETUPS.  Emma continues Saturdays 2-5pm at Crossroads Mall food court near the library, and David is hosting at Stoup brewery in Cap HIll Wednesdays at 7pm.

Cheers,
Bill
