Hello, Go Players,

We are glad to announce that on Dec 9th and 10th, we will host the second annual AGA WA State Championship at our new location (see seattlego.org/directions for a map). There will be an Open Tournament for strong, qualifying attendees (all even games to determine the state champion) and a Handicap Ratings Tournament. There will be 5 rounds -- two rounds Saturday and three rounds Sunday. SGC will order pizza (we definitely will order more than is needed this time), and the cost is $10 per person per day (not $10 per slice).

The top scoring player in the Open Tournament who has lived in Washington state for six months or more will win the 2023 Washington State Championship title and trophy.

The top scoring players in the Open Tournament that are employable in the United States win the championship prize money -- $500 for top score, $250 for second top score, and $125 for third top score.

Handicap Tournament cash prizes and youth prizes depend on registrations.

You must have a current AGA membership. Please renew ahead of time to make registration easier and to make starting on time possible. Go to AGA membership join/update page to check your membership status, or join. Parents, you must make sure your kids are valid members. If someone cannot become an AGA member before the first round of pairing, you cannot play because we submit all game records to the AGA.

Tournament Details:
* Registration time: December 9th, 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM
* Saturday First Round Starts: December 9th, 10:30 AM (second round around 2:00pm)
* Sunday Third Round Starts: December 10th, 10:30 AM (fourth around around 1:30pm, fifth round around 3:30pm)
* Entry Free: $20 for non-voting members, $10 for voting members, Youth (under 18) are free (the $10 fee is paid by a grant from AGF), and Spectators are free.
* Time Controls: 45 mins with 5 byo-yomi periods of 30 seconds.
* Tie-Breaker: SOS (sum of opponent scores), SODOS (sum of defeated opponents' scores), and lastly a tie-breaking game

This event is sponsored by the AGA State Championship fund, the AGA Tournament Support Program, and the Seattle AGA Chapter. Big thanks to the AGA for their support.

[Seattle Go Center] Kids Time Change and 2 Day Pro Workshop

Hi, all.  We are changing Kids Time to be from 2-5pm, and if there are no attendees at 4pm, we will close.  Also, note previous email of holiday closures related to Kids Time.

Please mark you calendars for 13-14 JAN.  Maeda Sensei 6p from the Kansai Ki-in will visit Seattle Go Center for a two day workshop.  He visits the Go Congress almost every year and is very popular for lectures and game reviews.  He has regular group lessons in Osaka for members of the Kansai KI-in.  When we have more info, we will share it.  If there are some materials for students before the workshop, we may ask people to register.  There will likely be lecture, game reviews, problem solving, and simuls.  Prices are not set yet, but for a two day workshop we may charge $60 for non-voting members and $40 for members.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Staying at Phinney Community Center

Hey, folks, SGC wants to inform you that the board met to discuss temporary locations.  For many reasons, primarily membership feedback and community, the board decided to remain at PNA until we receive settlement money to purchase a permanent location in 2027.  We've looked at many places since JUL.  No place was perfect within our budget, and most had major issues.  PNA stands out as a clear choice with all things considered.  Of course, as things tend to go, it could be first half of 2028 before we find a place, do any restorations, and move in.

If you have any questions, please send mail to manager@seattlego.org.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Awesome Anniversary, a Look ahead, and Thanks for Help

Thanks again for donations and help fund raising.  There was a prize drawing, and we contacted the winner who was not present for that.

The Anniversary Tournament was SGC being back to it bustling self after covid and moving.  36 folks participated with all very tame handicaps (and only one handicap game the first round).  We're seeing pre-covid crowds pretty consistently now, and we have quite a few 2-6 dans showing up on Tuesdays.  Sonny was looking for Panda Net city team folks in the anniversary tournament too.  I suspect we will have a very exciting state championship in DEC.

SGC has been quite exciting lately with long time members and many new folks.  We also have the Wed 7pm meetup at Stoup brewery in Cap Hill, and the Sat 2-5pm Crossroads Mall food court (near library entrance) which had 8 people last week.  Of course, our regular Tue and Sat open hours are always good.

We plan to have a two-day pro workshop 13-14 JAN.  We are still forming plans for that, but I expect it to be 10am - 5pm ish Sat and Sun with a mixture of lecture, game reviews, problems discussions, simuls, etc.  There will be more info on that in DEC.

We will plan other fun events such as rengo (pair go), lightning tournament, spring time big tournament with prize money again, etc.  We are open to fun ideas for events (especially if you can help host 😊), just send a note to programs@seattlego.org.

Thanks!!
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Fundraising and Anniversary Tournament 05 NOV

Hey, all.  We hope many people can attend the Anniversary Tournament, Sunday 05 NOV, with cash prizes and a strong players open section.  SGC will provide pizza for lunch.  Please make sure you have a current AGA membership so that we can submit results for ratings ($30 adults, $10 kids, https://www.usgo.org/content.aspx?page_id=60&club_id=454497).

Tournament registration is 9:00-9:45 (NOTE: DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ends this day at 2am when we turn clocks back one hour).  First round is 10:00am.  Entry Fee: $20 for non-voting members, $10 for voting members. Free if under 18 years old (grant from the AGF).

This will be the final message on fund raising this fall.  We had a good rally on annual memberships, thanks very much!!  We were hoping for more donations (that is, more money overall, not instead of memberships😊), but we're grateful for the memberships and what donations we received.  Truly, every bit helps, and SGC is not at risk of closing.  Thanks to everyone who participated in any way that you did!!!
