[Seattle Go Center] Pre-Register for Michael Redmond Class

We are opening registration for Michael Redmond Sensei's workshop, 14-15 SEP, Sat and Sun.  He is the only westerner to achieve 9 dan status in Japan.  He has not won any major titles, so given the non-linear scale to get to 9 dan, he has won many many games in his career.  He achieved 9 dan when he was 33 yrs old.  He was voted best commentator for NHK and has many videos on his Youtube channel.  He also has a series of reviews on all the AlphaGo Masters games, as well as some other AlphaGo reviews.

This event is PRE-REGISTRATION ONLY.  Please send an email to me or manager@seattlego.org to register.
For Saturday, we will limit the class to the first 20 people to send mail.  We will form a waiting list.  We will take payment online (https://www.seattlego.org/paid-instruction/) or at SGC by 24 AUG.  If you have not paid by then, we will start pulling people from the wait list to replace you.  Anyone attending Saturday is welcome to attend Sunday to watch the strong players class.  The price for Saturday is $30 for non-voting members and $20 for voting members.  Class will likely be 10am-5pm-ish.  More details to come later in AUG.

For Sunday, we will limit the class to the strongest 12 peopleto send email.  There will be two rounds of 6 people playing simuls, and Redmond Sensei will review the games at the front of the room (you may need to help remember your games in the beginning).  The price for Sunday is $30 for each game for non-voting members ($20 for voting members), but because I expect at least 12 people, I expect everyone will just pay $30 or $20.  Registrants should wait to pay until 17 AUG when I confirm the 12 highest ranked.  You need to pay by 24 AUG online (https://www.seattlego.org/paid-instruction/) or at SGC, or I will start taking people off the waiting list.  The first round simuls will start at 9am to allow one hour and 45 min per game (total time, no clocks).  Redmond Sensei plays quickly, but he wants to give students time to think.

Please respond to me or send mail to manager@seattlego.org to register for the class.

Cheers,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Looking for Volunteers for "From Hiroshima To Hope"

Hello Go players,

August 6th (Tuesday) will is the 79th anniversary of America dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Our generous benefactor, Kaoru Iwamoto 9p, was playing a Honinbo title match game with Utaro Hashimoto about 5 miles from the impact site. The blast disrupted the last day of their three-day game, and though windows were broken from the blast, nobody in the playing room was badly hurt. Later in the day, they restored the board state and finished the game. Only later, as they walked to their host’s house, did they get the terrible news of what happened as refugees were fleeing the center of Hiroshima.

There is an annual gathering at Green Lake to recognize this event with a beautiful floating lantern ceremony.  Seattle Go Center joins the activities prior to the lantern ceremony to replay the Atom Bomb Game.  For more info on the ceremony, go to https://fromhiroshimatohope.org.  If you're walking around Greenlake from roughly 4pm-6pm, a bit south of the theater on the west side of the lake, you might stop and say hey to the volunteers there today or place some game moves yourself.

I need 2-3 volunteer that are willing to play out the Atomic Bomb Game (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Go_games#Atomic_bomb_game) at the "From Hiroshima To Hope" event (https://fromhiroshimatohope.org/). This event is on August 6th (Tuesday) and lasts 90 mins to 2 hours of slowly placing stones. Its a more light outreach as it will be just slowly playing out the game and answering questions about the importance of the game and our history with it.

If you are interested in helping out, please email back

[Seattle Go Center] Nihon Ki-in Celebrates 100 Years 17 JUL 2024

There is a nice video about their history and some famous players, about 8 min:

If you don't know, Iwamoto Sensei is are primary benefactor, but upon his death, his Go Center holdings transferred to the Nihon Ki-in.  It is the Nihon Ki-in that primarily funds 2/3 of SGC's operations budget.  SGC wouldn't exist without them.

Maybe lift a glass and toast their success😊.

Cheers,
Bill

Hey Go members,

This year's Bon Odori at the Seattle Buddhist Temple is coming up.  It happens to be the last weekend of the Go Congress, 20-21 JUL, 2-8pm. Sadly, this year the Seattle Buddhist Temple had a fire. This means the temple building is unusable for the time being, so we will be located outdoors.  The event is limited this year, but we are still expecting high attendance at this popular event.  There will still be the traditional dancing in the streets and taiko players. Please consider helping out if you will be in town either day.  The Seattle Buddhist Temple really hopes we will participate again this year, and I would be thankful for your help.  I am looking for around 4-6 volunteers that can help teach go to people (most will know nothing about Go).  It is a fun event, and volunteers can take breaks to enjoy the event also.

Thanks for any help you can give.

[Seattle Go Center] Last Pro Visit 08-09 JUL Reminder

Chihiro Sensei 1p from the Kansai Ki-in will visit Mon and Tue, 08-09 JUL, before traveling to the Go Congress.  You can see some short info here (search for her name): https://gocongress.org/pros/.  She helps teach at the Osaka Go Camp each summer, and besides a children's program she runs, she teaches at the Kansai KI-in's Go Salon.

We will have an open format and no formal workshop.  She will play simuls, review games, answer questions, etc.  We will open SGC 4-7pm on Mon.  She arrives that day and will be tired from travel.  She will be at SGC Tue for open hours, and depending on her energy and dinner, she will stay until 7pm or 8pm.

Simul games will be $10 for voting members (annual and lifetime) and $20 for non-voting attendees.  At the Kansai Ki-in games are about $40 for members, so this is a good deal 😊.

Cheers,
Bill

P.S..
After the Go Congress, I will send out details on pre-registration for Michael Redmond 14-15 SEP.  We will limit Sat to 20 people, and we will limit Sunday to 12 top-ranked players.  Saturday attendees can listen in on Sun if they want, but Sunday is for the strong players to play and ask questions.

[Seattle Go Center] Go Congress Attendees

We only heard from six people going to the Go Congress.  I assume many more are going since it is so close and low overhead.  One person said they could take two people in a ride share.  One person asked for a ride.  Others weren't sure of their travel dates or were taking the train.

We can try to coordinate other rides if folks still want to respond.  I don't see enough responses to try to worry about an SGC meetup or evening out, but it is also a good time to see the folks we only see once a year or non-Go friends in PDX.

Cheers,
Bill
