[Seattle Go Center] Code of Conduct and Bread Toppings

Hi, all.  Every now and then we want to remind members that we have a Code of Conduct for SGC.  We last updated it during covid, and we just updated it recently.  Also, we have had a couple of issues in the last year, so we're posting today.  We will print the new CoC for the plastic holders at the entrance of SGC on Saturday.

Key points are to be respectful toward each other, clean up after yourselves, and comply with decisions from the Day Manager (usually Kyle or River).  Also, there is no eating while sitting at the gobans and playing.  There have been some flagrant food messes around boards and in the kitchen area, so please be respectful and clean up after yourself.

Lastly, folks haven't been contributing to the food jar when consuming bread, meats, cheeses, etc.  We buy those things with the money from the jar, so when there is insufficient funds, we don't by the extras that make the bread more enjoyable for some.  We just re-seeded the meats and cheeses, but please contribute if you are enjoying those things so that we can keep them on hand.

We try not to police drinks money, bread jar money, and memberships/door fees, but this money is important to keep SGC operating.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] Two Pro Visits -- Slightly Short Notice

Korean 9d pro Lee Dong-hoon (became pro at 14 and by 19 years old was 9d and one of the strongest pros in recent years) will visit SGC 22-23 FEB.  Plans are not settled yet, but he will do a two-day workshop on Sat and Sun.  Sonny is helping us find a translator., but if you're fluent in Korean and want to help out, let me know.  When I have more details, I will update, but I expect this to be similar to our usual workshops -- 10am-5pm with a mixture of lecture, game reviews, simuls, etc.  This is a sudden development, hence the short notice and poor time distance from the next pro visit.

Maeda Sensei from the Kansai KI-in will visit 15-16 MAR.  He visited us last year for a very nice and fun workshop.  He arrives late, so I think this will be Sat from 1pm or 2pm to 6pm or 6:30pm, and then Sun 10am-5pm.

Both workshops will be for both days at $40 for non-voting members and $30 for voting members.  We will organize pizza both days for Mr. Lee's workshop at $15/day for 4 slices of a large 10-cut pie.  We will organize pizza only for Sun for Maeda Sensei's workshop.

More details on both to come ...

Cheers,
bill

P.S.,
We will have at least one more pro visit later in the year and possibly two more if one stops by on their way to or from the congress.

[Seattle Go Center] Volunteers needed for Lunar New Year in Edmonds Feb 1st

Hi Go players,

The Edmonds Center For the Arts has requested that we host a table at their Lunar New Year Event. This is a new event but seems to be a smaller one. I am looking for 4-6 Volunteers to join me in teaching Go at the Edmonds Center For the Arts (410 4th Ave N, Edmonds, WA 98020) on February 1st from 10am to 3pm. There is not setup or take down, so it should be a really easy event.

If you are free and would like to enjoy a Lunar New Year festival while teaching people go, please let me know

[Seattle Go Center] Want a Resident 9d Pro at SGC ???

Hey, all.  We would very much appreciate responses to gauge interest in having a resident 9p Korean pro living in SEA and attending SGC regularly, running group lessons and private lessons.  We are very excited by this prospect, but we're not sure if it will work out.

We are talking to a pro who is considering moving to SEA and settling here, but he is curious about how many students and how much income might he make, that is, can he make it work or not.

Please let us know (reply to this email or send manager@seattlego.org mail):
 * would you be interested in regular private lessons (weekly, monthly) and what is your feeling on how much you would pay for 1-2 hours of private f2f instruction?  Please be thoughtful in your response and not glib or whimsical.
 * would you be interested in, say, weekly group lessons (game reviews, tsumego, lecture, simuls, etc.) and what is your feeling on how much you would pay for a 2-hour group lesson?  I presume the pro would accommodate interest, for example, having two group classes each week, one stronger and one weaker, or different times to suit different schedules.
 * Inseong students, what would you look for or want if you could switch to a local pro who gave deeper and more thoughtful game reviews?
 * any other information you think we should be considering

Thanks you for your thoughtful responses!!
Bill

Hello Go Players,

This January 25th, we are hosting another Lightning tournament from 2pm to 6pm.  This is a casual, lots-of-fun handicap tournament with fast time control (1 min main time with 5x10second byouyomi).  They say lightning Go is about instinct, not reading, so abandon the intensity of reading for more cutting and crashing and burning and laughter.  There will be 5 rounds with an estimated 20-30 min per game.

I look forward to seeing you there and lets us start the year with some lighting fast games.
