[Seattle Go Center] Please Help Outreach Snoqualmie International Block Party

We are doing outreach 06 SEP, Sat, from 11am-4pm, and we really could use a couple of people to spend part of the day helping us teach.  It is just Heath and me due to another outreach event on Vashon.  Heath and I can do load in and load out, so please just show up during the festival time.

The event is the Snoqualmie International Block Party:

Come enjoy a hike in the wonderful nature of the Snoqualmie Valley, ride the train to and from North Bend, hang at the festival, and teach Go for a couple of hours 😊.

Thanks,
Bill

[Seattle Go Center] 30th Anniversary Party -- Mark Your Calendars!!

Hey Go Community!!!  This year is Seattle Go Center's 30th birthday.  Seattle was very lucky to be anointed with one of Iwamoto Sensei's Go Centers.  It was a close decision with other cities being considered.  We've been grateful to him and the Nihon Ki-in for supporting Go in the Seattle area, both at SGC and the remote meetups we're able to help out.

I moved to Seattle in NOV 1995, saw the iconic billboard signage that has drawn so many to SGC, and immediately stopped what I was doing to go there and see what up.  I came from Pittsburgh where barely five people played Go seriously.  Crazy to think the synchronicity that I moved here just one month after SGC opened.  Fri nights were the big gathering then, with upwards of 8-10 people attending 😊.

We will have a party 04 OCT, Sat, at 6pm and a two-day workshop with a pro from the Nihon Ki-in.  There won't be a ratings tournament that weekend due to the Nihon Ki-in sending someone for our anniversary (we'll have the Anniversary Tournament later in OCT).  We'll cater some food, have a nice birthday cake, Chris may make Japanese shokupan milk bread for us, and we'll have nihonshu (you can bring your own beverages too).

More details to follow on the pro that will visit and the Anniversary Tournament this year.

Cheers!!
Bill

Hello Go Players,

Vashon Island invited SGC to a new small-mid size Japan Fest.  This event will be held on the 6th of September and runs from 1pm-6pm on Vashon Island.  That's an hour of travel with a ferry ride.  I am looking for 1-2 volunteers to carpool with me and be ready to go from SGC at 11am.  I estimate we get back by 7pm.  Set up and take down should be easy as the event is providing tables and chairs.  If someone else wants to drive, that's great, just let me know.

If you can commit to this longer time or have question about this event, please email me back.

[Seattle Go Center] Volunteers needed for Workshop in ShoreLine Library Sept 24th

Hello Go Players,

The Shoreline Library has invited us back to host a Workshop on the Ancient Game of Go. Last time we reached over 20 people and did way better than both what the library and I thought we would. For this run of it, I am looking for 3-4 volunteers to help run the room. This means taking questions about the game and Center and also providing a few teaching games and commentary as needed. We will also be doing a lecture at the start of the Workshop if the class size is large enough, and I would like to have someone work as a pseudo-teaching assistant, asking questions, answering basic questions and other small requests to help the lecture move.

This run of the workshop will be hosted at the Shoreline Library on September 24th (Wednesday) and runs from 5:30pm-7:30pm. The library also provides some snacks and drinks.

If you would like to help out on this Workshop or just have questions about it, please email me back

[Seattle Go Center] 80th Anniversary of Atomic Bomb Game -- 06 AUG 2025

Dear Seattle Go Center Community,

Tomorrow is the 80th anniversary of America dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.  Our generous benefactor, Kaoru Iwamoto 9p, was playing a Honinbo title match game with Utaro Hashimoto about 5 miles from the impact site.  The blast disrupted the last day of their three-day game, and though windows were broken from the blast, nobody in the playing room was badly hurt.  Later in the day, they restored the board state and finished the game.  Only later, as they walked to their host's house, did they get the terrible news of what happened as refugees were fleeing the center of Hiroshima.

There is an annual gathering at Green Lake to recognize this event with a beautiful floating lantern ceremony.  For more info on the ceremony, go to https://fromhiroshimatohope.org.  Seattle Go Center joins the activities prior to the lantern ceremony to replay the Atom Bomb Game.  If you're walking around Greenlake from roughly 4pm-6pm, a bit south of the theater on the west side of the lake, you might stop and say hey to the volunteers there today or place some game moves yourself.

For more information on the Atomic Bomb Game, including a game record, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Go_games#Atomic_bomb_game   and

Peace,
Bill
